NanoCount overview

NanoCount is a little program that watches the front TextEdit document and shows you the total words (or total characters). It also lets you set a goal and shows a little progress bar.

Thrilled! All I needed was a neat, minimalist, and graceful tool for word count in Text Edit - and that is NanoCount2.0 - it's perfect. I opened a text doc, and NanoCount2.0, and, relaxing after dinner, was contentedly waiting for the document's word count to appear. Then I realized it HAD appeared...I was waiting for it to begin and the job had been done! I sat up in my chair and laughed with delight. Oh,la! I put the alias in dock, after testing it, and that's all there is to resolving an issue that had created a serious block in a writing project I was doing. When paper and text fonts were uniform, it was easy to make a quick count. Notttannymore. Displays show text windows in varying modes and word count is no standard thing. Add to this, the effect of use of the range of fonts - changes the way word count must be tallied. In my ratings here, I gave only a "3" value for 'Stability' because I have not owned the proggie long enough to rate it. I hope I remember to come back to this review later and amend it, when time and experience make me a better judge of its Stability. But so far, I am good to go with NanoCount2.0 Thank you Mr. Gorman elle fagan Artsite

Clean and simple. And free. I like. A few suggestions though, * It gives an (ugly) error if TextEdit is not open. * Would be nice if NanoCount could give the number of words/chars (or both!) in it's icon in dock as well. * Would also be nice if the progress bar could indicate how far one has gone past its maximum. * Since I'm mostly interested in the number of chars and not the words, it would be a little more clean if Nano Count would remember my settings. * After (accidently) trying to resize the settings dialog it minimizes to just show chars/words, without giving the option to get its full size again. * Talking about resizing.. well. * This may be beyond the simplicity of this app, but as I personally use to keep copies of paragraphs within the document while working on the text, I'd love to have Nano Count to just show the number of words/chars until a given delimiter (like three bullets, or whatever) - that would be the real length of my text not counting all working parts. Could be fairly simple to implement. * The settings dialog could actually be made to appear even more smoothly.. This is an app I could have written myself. So far I haven't, and I though find it useful, so thanks to the author for putting it together.

Well, I won't knock it 'cuz it's free, but... 1) I was hoping this would have something to do with the iPod Nano, and 2) You can do most of this with a very short AppleScript: tell application "TextEdit" count (words of text of document 1) end tell

Excellent app. Very simple to use and does exactly what it's advertised to do. The word counts are accurate and the refreshes are as well.
