was a great little tool, and i held off updating itunes incase apple were trying to kill it again (plus, none of the updates were of any use to me at all), but then my ibook blew up and the oldest version of itunes i could get for my new machine was 4.8 and now iPodDownload won't work. anyone who has an ipod and is lucky enough to have 4.7 keep it and get this. damn apple for a] killing this tool and b] not including this facility from the off. hopefully development will continue but with apple issuing cease and desist orders against the hosting company and releasing updates just to disable this, it i hold out little hope, me, i'm gonna go try and find 4.7 again

Due to legal threats from Apple to the developer, iPodDownload is no longer being distributed. And even if it was, it wouldn't work with the modern iTunes. I was a great program. But it's dead

The solution to get ipoddownload work again is simply to... get back to itunes 4.7, saving your library first! I did it, and it works just fine again...! Who needs 4.7.1!?...No need if you don't use an ipod shuffle anyway...!

For iTunes 4.7.1: Just open up iTunes executable (iTunes>Contents>MacOS>iTunes) in HexEdit. Search for the ASCII field of iPod. it will show iPod Download. Change that text, being sure to keep the same number of characters. e.g. iPdo Donwlaod

This is a MUST HAVE for all ipod owners. Everything works as said above. If you have lots of songs on your iPod, then you'll have to wait a while for the "ipod download" feature to read all the songs on your ipod. Also, if you have your ipod on firewire disk mode, and have stored sound files on there, you should know that you can't play those on your iPod because it doesn't read sound files from that area, however, the "ipod download" feature reads those songs and adds them to the selection. So don't freak out when you see sound files you aren't used to seeing. Thats a cool feature I must say. I'm truely impressed with this little plug-in. Thanks to the developers that created this purely genious plugin for iTunes. fifty golds stars to all of you.. Have fun importing "from" the ipod to the library simply, efficiently and safe.

The Reason some albums aren't copied is because they're in AAC I guess this plugin only works on MP3s...

Has anyone else noticed that certain albums don't copy? Is this at request of the artist or label and somehow they are not permitted to be transferred to the computer?

Smashing little tool. Here's a little hint for you, Apple: I should be able to copy my music to and from my iPod on my computer. It's MY iPod, MY computer and MY music. Not yours, and certainly not the RIAA's. But you're artificially holding my music hostage. iPodDownload sets my tunes free and lets iTunes and the iPod work the way they should have from the very start.

As usual most of the reviewers here just don't get it. Apple has no problems with software that puts iPod tracks back on the HD. None whatoever. There's tens of products that do just that - released without any interference from Apple. Apple has only one problem with iPodDownload. That's because it operates as an iTunes plug-in. Just that, nothing more, nothing less.

Guys, if there's a wish, there's a way. But Apple just can't keep quite and do nothing about it. Further more, we are allow to keep the song we purchase from net in more than one Mac or PC, correct me if I'm wrong. Just imagine the old days, the black disc record, can't even make a single backup (Sorry Apple, I compare iTunes with old technology). I believe Apple provide a very much better benefits for what we legally pay for. I believe Apple still searching for improvement. But Apple also must control a fair play to the artist. That's why Apple block this application until they found the solution which can provide the benefits of this utility and protect the benefits of artist at the same time; they will implement it by then..... Keep it up, Apple.

As usual, Apple (and other music providers) are missing the point. What about folks who purchased music from iTunes only to have their computers crash? You should be allowed to have a backup of your OWN music. Until Apple allows authorized users an extra re-download of their music from iTunes 'just in case,' their cries of piracy hold no water. Funny how so many providers who tout digital music's benefits then punish those who turn to it.

Silly Apple for forcing removal of downloads of this always... it will just appear somewhere else. Just shows how people's desire for freedom goes beyond those who want to stifle it.

This program have the ability to enhance the piracy issue. So it's good for consumer but not good for artist and publisher, it's illegal, I believe that's the reasons why Apple block it. As in previous iTunes keynote by Jobs, the whole idea of iTunes is to fight against piracy by giving additional benefits that piracy copy can't provide. But this software adding something which include all the benefits of iTunes provide and copy songs from other iPod and make it as own copy; which can be define as piracy. Too bad Apple block it fast, or else a lot of people will happy cos they can own some of the song by borrow other's iPod without pay to the artist. Piracy don't growth the music world, they kill. We steal the money from artist salary. I believe this is not the original idea of the developer, but some how people find this special "features" within this program and everybody get exciting about it.

I don't see why Apple is freaking out about this app. How to copy files off an iPod: cd /Volumes/nameOfiPod/iPod_Control/Music mkdir ~/Desktop/MP3s cp -R * ~/Desktop/MP3s That will copy EVERYTHING. Alternatively you can find a specific file by: cd /Volumes/nameOfiPod/iPod_Control/Music mkdir ~/Desktop/MP3s cp "`find . -name *partOfFilename*`" ~/Desktop/MP3s/

Very good! Everything runs well, it's very easy to use, it's value is undeniable IMHO (saved me from having to buy back some songs off of iTMS), and it's very stable. And Apple, you should really stop trying, it's still going to be downloadable everywhere.

After Apple threatened my web hosting company and my site was shut down for more than 1 hour, I had to withdraw the plugin. %^( According to my web hosting company, Apple says the plugin is "unauthorized". Anyway, I am still waiting for an explanation on what iPodDownload is supposed to violate (Apple never contacted me!) So thank you for all the good feedback from all iPodDownload users, and stay tuned...

Didn't encounter any probs with an iPod mini. But I think it would be helpful having a readme and some screenshots with it. I didn't expect to find iPod Download on the left below the music library in iTunes. Thought it would be in the menu similar to the scripts. Wishlist: A better icon would be great and being a little faster. Anyway, I like it. It's a quite good idea, that only needs little improvement.

Also, you're iPod isn't acting as another computer. It's acting like a hard drive and that wouldn't account for packets. That said it is weird to see so many 114 byte packets flying around. I'll put on my investigation hat.

Overall this is really cool. It does take quite some time to load the songs. I wonder if the application is reading from the database or the id3 tags. I'd expect the database as it's not TOO long of a time and tags such as Grouping and Compilation aren't available, though they are brought along when copying songs to your computer. Additionally, it does not list protected songs like Audible or iTMS content. I believe the load time is inevitable but it'd be nice if protected songs were listed. I can see how this might be seen as a piracy issue, but they're protected. I can't play songs I copy from a friend because I'd need my computer authorized for his account and if I have that then I'm within the iTunes usage agreement right? A pref to allow id3 parsing to allow for compilation and grouping would be nice but isn't critical. Nifty.

A few things. First, as far as the network activity noticed when using this, your iPod is acting like another computer so you're going to see some kind of activity. LittleSnitch didn't see anything trying to call home and I had my internet connection unplugged, so I'm assuming all is safe on that front. On a different note, this plugin didn't work at all for me. My iPod is home to more than 8000 songs. At the 5 minute mark, the plugin was still not finished taking inventory, and in fact, my iPod had frozen. When I tried to force quit iTunes, it gave me the option, but wouldn't do it. On installing the plugin the Finder and all other applications acted the same way causing me to restart first my iPod then my computer. I didn't think it was the plugin at this point, but after the second time with problems, and after uninstalling the plugin with no more problems, I'm thinking it was the culprit. I think it has great potential, but it's not ready yet.

When I attached my iPod after installing the plugin, I noticed that these was an increase in network activity. The iPod Download plugin never loaded my songs from the iPod, yet during the time that it was "Reading" the songs from my iPod it was sending information packets out. Beware.
