Cleaning out old apps when I tried to erase the Safari favicons with SafariSpeed 1.3 (been in there a long time) and it did not work. Tried again. Nothing. Don't thinkI'll spend $8.00 for the updated version to see if that works. Have Safari 3.1.

I installed this software yesterday to see what the hype was all about. Ever since then, safari can no longer find google, myspace and a bunch of other websites. When I try to delete it, I'm told that I don't have sufficient permission to do so. If anyone has any tips or ideas as to what I've done wrong could you please email me at danstheman2watch@hotmail.com (lame email address, I know)? Many thanks, Dan

From Safari's developer regarding this app: I just saw this article on Digg about how to “speed up Safari” by reducing the “page load delay” in preferences. In the comments are many testimonials like “Oh my gosh! Safari is so much faster now!” This just goes to prove how inaccurate people's powers of perception are when it comes to measuring the performance of browsers. I say this because the preference in question is dead and does absolutely nothing in Safari 1.3 and Safari 2.0.

Sorry, but this is hilarious. The pref to change this so called delay is dead since Safari 1.3 and it was the *maximum* delay, not the minimum. People seeing a big difference should definitely stop smoking. According to the Safari dev, disabling the cache should be useless too. Anyway, charging for features so easy to do for free is a bit silly. If you want to kill favicons, change the look and *a lot* more, check SafariStand.

The cache disabling feature seems silly to me. The whole point of a cache is to increase performance, therefore disabling the cache will slow things down, if anything. Nobody is going to pay $8 for this.

To Stormchild, you're right in that the cache is designed to speed things up, but for most people with high speed connections, browser performance will degrade as the cache grows and Safari has to search through all the cache files. It is often faster to simply download webpages rather than searching through thousands of cache files. In addition, disabling the cache helps save disk space. This app looks good, but instead of paying $$$ for it, you could issue a few simple commands at the command line to accomplish the same thing for free!

I honestly wish I was still able to provide it for free. The previous versions of SafariSpeed were all released as donationware - meaning, if you like it, you're supposed to donate something. Unfortunately, I got about $20 a month in donations, and hosting the website and downloads cost a good bit more than that. As a result, I've added a bunch of new features and made this version shareware. I hope you can understand where I'm coming from. You're welcome to continue to use the old version; the features in the old version were not changed in any way in the new release. I hope this helps explain why I started charging.

I understand exactly where you're coming from. And I'm sorry about your situation. It sucks having bandwidth that you cannot pay for. You had to do what you had to do. :) It's not a steep price, by any means, so there's not much to complain about. It does what it does, and it does it well. Thanks for a great app.

While test driving SafariSpeed 2.0, I came across the following error message while attempting to change the Brushed Metal look in the Interface settings. AppleScript Error unzip: cannot find or open /Volumes/SafariSpeed/Volumes/SafariSpeed.zip or /Volumes/SafariSpeed.ZIP. (9) Clicking on either button under Interface launched Safari, then gave me a dialog window to close Safari, followed by the above error message. I had no problems with disabling the lag time. It made my Safari 2.0.4 incredibly faster than it had been. For the record I'm on an Intel iMac running Tiger 10.4.8 and Safari 2.0.4

From the error message you provided, it appears that you were attempting to run SafariSpeed from the disk image it comes packaged on. To avoid this error, you should copy SafariSpeed to your Applications folder (or somewhere else on your hard drive) before running it. If this doesn't fix the problem for you, please let me know. My e-mail address is awarofka@scifience.net. I'll be glad to help you troubleshoot.

When I clicked the Disable Brushed Metal button, it worked just fine, but then when I start Safari, nothing happens. If I open a bookmark, I get a window but nothing loads. So I clicked Enable Brushed Metal, to get back to the old setting. Now I have an extra menu bar at the top of the safari window. How can I get rid of that ? Thanks for you help. Just ran this app and WOW! Safari had slowed down terribly for me. Took about a minute to open and got the spinning ball whenever I opened any page. I thought there was a problem with my computer. Safari now opens instantly and pages load very fast. I had actually stopped using my laptop and moved to another computer as Safari was just too slow and I won't use IE. Very small app that apparently does something and does it quite well.

I can't notice any difference, maybe because I'm on a fast connection... But the MacUpdate favicon is still in my address bar though... Isn't it supposed to be gone if the favicon cash is disabled? Ho well... Safari was really fast already anyway so no big deal I guess :)

I've always been very skeptical of so-called Internet Optimizers, as in my experience they've rarely done anything at all, and in cases they did something actually slowed down my computer with unecessary junky 'optimizers'. The only reason I downloaded this application was because it was free, too often fake Optimizers cost money, and I thought "Well, I have nothing to lose." Boy was I surprised, not only did it speed up Safari's rendering, it also cut down on Safari's HD accessing and memory use since it allowed me to dump the cache of site icons! I often run Bit Torrent cocurrently with my web browsing - and it's slow like dial up. With SafariSpeed, I can hardly tell Azureus is greedily gobbling 100k a second from my DSL.

I usually have to wait for a moment before I download pages from CNN/Money and the Morning Call pages, but after I ran SafariSpeed, it just started showing the whole page instead of waiting for all those lil bitsy pieces from the sidebars/advertisements to load up. Excellent stuff!

Hi, I have no clue what is going on with the disk images. I've built it twice on two different machines; one with a background image (the 2.2MB version), and one without (the 64k version). Some people have gotten both to work; some neither, and some one but not the other. In any case, I now replaced the disk image with a zip file, which doesn't involve mounting and should work just fine. Sorry about all the trouble! I've never had any problems like this before! This problem is caused by not having the BSD Subsystem installed. The command that SafariSpeed uses to apply the optimization requires portions of the BSD Subsystem in order to work properly. If you have any other questions or need more assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

This is a AppleScript that calls a shell-script. You can do it from the Terminal ( to test the "delay-factor"... ) Terminal: Delay-On: defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitInitialTimedLayoutDelay 1.00 Delay-Off: defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitInitialTimedLayoutDelay 0.000001 That's what I found in the .app
