SolarSeek is an Open Source project. It's intension is to develop a native Mac OS X client for the SoulSeek peer to peer filesharing network. SolarSeek is under constant development by some core developers but everybody is invited to join the developer community.
What's new in SolarSeek
Version 0.95.3:
Fixes the successful download crash as well as implements another user-submitted patch which helps reduce crashing
For those of you who get the would you like to update to 0.95.1, please IGNORE it. We just have to update our appcast feed. Sorry for any inconvenience.
Its a nicely designed program but its pretty much unusable in its current stage. It crashes like a fat guy on a pogo stick. Hopefully the next version wont suck as much.
It's rare that I write reviews, but man, this app deserves one. In short: total junk. It crashes all the time, making it incredibly frustrating to use. God forbid should you try to do several searches at once, or browse users, because if you do you're probably going to get a crash. Ugh. I've tried using this program for months and have always been on the edge of throwing in the towel, and now I finally am.
I am having alot of problem with crashes. I have found a couple of things.
1) If you don't have and dls going, then the program runs super slow(beach ball on everything you click followed by a 15-30 sec wait).
2)If you have a dl going, the easiest way to make the thing log you out is to search for something with alot of results. (Actually this is any time.)
3)Log offs are AT RANDOM except for when you search for something with a lot of results.
4)People cannot search my files or upload very well.
SolarSeek is cute and nice, but I really miss the 'download containing folder' that can be found on the original Soulseek client... Or I haven't seen where it hides ?
I dumped Soulseex (no update since May 2005 sheeesh!) and switched to SolarSeek. I'm not looking back. Nice interface but it's not only a matter of cuteness. It's very good feature-wise as well. Keep up the good work!
For those of you who get the would you like to update to 0.95.1, please IGNORE it. We just have to update our appcast feed. Sorry for any inconvenience.
After install this update, SolarSeek says: "SolarSeek 0.95.1 is now availabre (you have 0.95.2). Would you like download it now?". I have to deactivate "Automatically check for updates". A progress bar for searches would be nice. You never know when is going to finish. "Waiting for results..." is frustrating.
It has been a long while since I used Soulseek, and when I looked for a new client, Solarseek really stood out to me. It has a great interface, and feels like a truly native mac application. Soulseex is okay, but it just doesn't behave like a mac would. I have had some crashing issues, however, not enough to hinder the usability of Solarseek. I do admit, the queues are sometimes long, but overall, I feel that the performance of Solarseek is excellent. I feel that this is a great project, and I would really like to see it continue to develop, I really think that this application has Adium like potential, becoming a staple in every mac users dock.
Still has a lot of work to do but so far looks great.
My second favorite P2P program next to Limewire :)
Can't wait to see v1.0 of Solarseek after looking at the preview.
One request from me is to allow previewing . Other than that, great work!
Out of the reviews posted, this client has not crashed or caused any problems on my computer. I can actually browse through user files, and find most of the things that I want to look for. The only thing is that the qeues are very, very long.
Great potential... but crashes so often that it's practically unusable.
Definitely worth watching... but not currently usable in the sense that SoulSeek is meant to be used. When you consider that SoulSeek is most valuable as a P2P service to stay connected to for extended periods of time... and then consider that the app will rarely stay running for more than an hour (sometimes only a minute or so)... then you're left with something that defeats the purpose.
Again... next release, I'll give it another whirl... and I'd be VERY happy to donate whatever I can... but not until it's something I can actually use.
For all solarseek users heres a heads up of what the current situation is. Although I am not a developer or a moderator of this project, I do speak to them and from what they have told me, development for 0.95 is moving really slow due to lack of time and overall lack of developers. So if you want solarseek to stop crashing and be vastly improved please help them find developers for this application. Post it on forums, spread it by mouth, w/e we all want think its a great application with great potential and now all it needs is some help by being pushed. If you find a developer please give them this link to contact the project manager, http://www.fejta.com/solarseek/contact/
Thanks, Jon Kantro
it says it is going to download things, and even offers promising results, but when you try to download, very very little gets through. i always seem to have hours and hours waiting, while with apps such as poisoned that search other p2p clients get me things withing minutes! also, unable to browse others downloadable programs, even when i have their id and they are sitting in the same room with me. we can both chat, they running tiger, i running panther, and another running windows with actual soulseek client. only windows user could browse our files. we could chat with him, but saw nothing. mind you, we were all on the same lan sitting five feet away!
this software has so much potential, but is flaky and shaky as it stands. it shows more files, and more obscure files than any other Mac P2P app, but crashes constantly, often several times ina row, for no reason at all. i have used it a lot, and accept its limitations as a pay-off for the vast number of files it seeks out.
I don't care about anything but stability. No chat rooms, no whistles, no bells, just access to the network and thoise files. Maybe sort the clickable "sort by" tabs if you have time, but just stop it crashing.
If it was just 50% more stable I'd pay $$$ for it, no questions. and so would thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of other mac users locked in to Cabos, Limewire and the dreadful ssX.
@the developers: think about it - you have a vast lucrative market, you've got this far and it could so easily be THE killer P2P app for mac. Please sort it out!
hello,
thanks for this great application !
There is just one thing i don't like, because it doesn't keep my not finished downloads in progress when i restart the app.
bye
I downloaded SolarSeek and don't understand how to get a username and password. I go to preferences, and I'm given a screen to type in my username/password. But there isn't any place to get a username and password. Can anyone help?
it is the best p2p for windows but unfortunately it does not work for macintosh, getting infos and browsing folders does not work, it disconnecr after 10mins and it does not find anything.
what is wrong with this software???
It works really good in PC (soulseek) but it is not the same for mac, solar seek has a lot of problems under mac. I paid 5 doolars to get privilege and i cant download anything.
Cool App in theory. But the progran just disconnects me 2 seconds after I connect. I wonder why. Well currently I have to say this problem limits the use of this app to zero. Pitty. As I have yet to find a app that works the soulseek network.
Program works and is stable for me, but I can neither see user info or shared files. Can't browse, can't download. Will someone please explain to me what exactly am I doing wrong?
Whatever you do, don't choose the 'interface' section in the preferences...causes a crash everytime. Yeah this thing works, but man its so annoying compared to the pc version. Developers: are you listening??

Version: 0.70
Solarseek does not work on my iMac. When I try to connect, It seems to log on and it is immediatly disconnected from server.
Sometimes i see the following message :
"file size is too big to use for the soulseek network please choose an image under 40Kb"
If somebody understand my problem please help me.
Regards.
Missing quite a few features, but it's so nice to have a client that actually runs half decent on a Mac. Nicotine has 10 times the features (even more then the PC version). But it gets seriously bogged down on my machine with X11 running (my Mac is aging G4 400). This is a great start and I hope you continue developing it.
it works. that is fine. we need it, that is obvious. stability is similar to the PC version. But:
Dear developer,
pleeeeease go on with this beta. the pc-version has so much more features we would be happy to see them in your next versions!!!! (please!)
Could you give a little reply: Can we hope, that this software will become improved next days/weeks?
btw.: slsk got another update yesterday....
Great to get to soulseek network on my mac, but there are still bad things : can't see the tranfers speed and can't browse user's files, an disconnections sometimes happen..
despite all this i'm so pleased to get rare files !!!
It is FINALLY HERE! the Mac OS X version of SoulSeek, the best P2P Filesharing program out there for lovers of alternative and electronic music. Check out www.slsknet.org for tips on the PC version which will help you to understand the OS X version and how to get Download priveledges.
It's good, because you can find many (unknown) albums with it. Though, you need a lot of patience because your downloads can stay "Queued" for a long time.
I hope that will be improved in the next version, even adding the features from the PC version. [PC... awww, dirty word, I'm sorry!]
Compared to the actual Soul Seek client for PC, this is garbage.
Featureless, unstable, and full of bugs.
It's only JUST useable, though requires some patience.
this works great!!!! you can find tons of full albums even of rare interprets. wonderfull!!!
but: this software needs improvements: up to now (even in the pc-world) no sorting by e.g. lenght or bitrate is possible.
you cant move the seperators a.s.o.
goodbye limewire!!!!
FOR THOSE WHO REALY IN THE MUSIC ITS GREAT APP, BUT REMEMBER THERE'S ALOTS OF QUEDE'S.
BUT I DO THINK THAT THIS APP GON'E BE REALY IMPRESIVE ONE DAY...
I got a few successful files but most stay Q'd all the time. And the interface needs a little work. I miss being able to redial or "try again" like in acqlite. Double clicking seems to have no effect.
Very, very nice user-friendly program! Nice interface, I love it.
Unfortunately, i'm dissapointed in the search-results and most of my downloads stay "Queued"
No X11, No Python, beta, easy to use, excellent for hard to find files, interface similar to early Aquisition, thanks for this simple entry level app, look forward to updates.
Just register a weird name that hasn't been used before. It works brilliantly. Well done to everyone involved in the project - thank you for this great program
From my understanding, SoulSeek is only officially available for Windows. As such, it's nice to see some people putting an effort into getting a decent Mac client...
To register I ~think~ you have to use the Windows version of the official client.
But, once you've got a username, SolarSeek works like a charm!
This program doesn't work for me either. WHY WASTE PEOPLE'S TIME BY WRITING CRAPWARE? Write a program that at least gives basic functionality and then give it a debut.
This is coming along nicely, it has already replaced nicotine for me because of stability and speed alone. Now it just needs to catch up on the features.
How would you rate SolarSeek app?
