gCount is a menu bar and/or Dock item that displays the unread status of the inbox of a recently popular email service. It is provided free of charge. It requires Mac OS X 10.3 or later
What's New
Version 0.5:

Features

  • Preference to specify an alternate Web browser for gCount to use for external links (eg. Open Inbox, Compose Mail).
  • gCount now uses a much faster, and less memory intensive method for communicating with the email service (Atom feed), thanks to Jim Thomason.
  • Growl notifications now include the authors' names of unread threads.
  • gCount now uses your proxy settings, if you use one.

Bug Fixes

  • Audio files are now scanned for proper extensions. .DS_Store is not a sound. :)
  • gCount is now again compatible with Growl. See http://growl.info/ for more info.
  • Many memory leaks squashed, and a few under the hood performance improvements.
  • Login information is no longer passed as arguments to a script. Yay.

This used to be the top Gmail notifier, but the developer has become lazy. The program hasn't worked in months. All that is needed to fix it is to change the RSS feed, but apparently the developer doesn't care. The least he could do is release a version where you can change the RSS feed yourself, so we wouldn't have to wait for him.

Works very well. The only feature I'd like to see is to have gCount automatically reset the new mail indicator when I use the "open inbox" command.

Great little app. It doesn't hog my CPU. Stays at 0% activity most of the time, goes to 0.05% now and then. Goes up to about 50% for a second while it checks for mail.

More importantly if you set gCount to the default mail application in the preferences of Mail.app you get mailto: links working. Pressing a mailto: link will open a new gmail compose window!

Would be nice to see unread messages and icon instead of only one or the other.

Great work!

I gave this app a 5 for ease of use, and a 3 for value. Althought it is great to have this app to check your gmail account, it seems like a waste of space if you also have a pop/imap which gets checked by some other app.

Suggestion: Would be great if gcount would check imap/pop and gmail altogether. I think it would soar to new levels with those features.

What do you think?

I've always liked gCount better than GmailStatus, but in the recent time, GmailStatus has got so many new features, while I'm sitting here with gCount who hasn't even been updated to Gmail's new logic scheme. Please Nathan Spindel, keep up your work on gCount.

Edit to my post here:
It's supposed to say "login", not "logic".
