TeXMaker overview

Texmaker is a program that integrates many tools needed to develop documents with LaTeX in just one application.

Features:
  • A unicode editor to write your LaTeX source files (syntax highlighting, undo-redo, search-replace, ...)
  • The principal LaTex tags can be inserted directly with the "LaTeX", "Math" and "Greek" menus
  • 370 mathematical symbols can be inserted in just one click
  • Wizards to generate code ('Quick document', 'Quick letter', tabular, tabbing and array environments)
  • LaTeX-related programs can be launched via the "Tools" menu
  • The standard Bibtex entry types can be inserted in the ".bib" file with the "Bibliography" menu
  • A "structure view" of the document for easier navigation of a document (by clicking on an item in the "Structure" frame, you can jump directly to the corresponding part of your document
  • Extensive LaTeX documentation
  • In the "Messages / Log File" frame, you can see information about processes and the logfile after a LaTeX compilation
  • The "Next Latex Error" and "Previous Latex Error" commands let you reach the LaTeX errors detected by Kile in the log file
  • By clicking on the number of a line in the log file, the cursor jumps to the corresponding line in the editor

Hi, I am new to TeXmaker and just installed this latest version but I am afraid I need some help. I could not quick build the .tex file and the error is: could not start the command : "/usr/texbin/pdflatex" -synctex=1 -interaction=nonstopmode "trail2".tex For the previous version this problem could be solved by specifying the full path of the pdfLaTeX however it does not work for this version(4.3). Would any one give me some suggestions? "/usr/texbin/pdflatex" -synctex=1 -interaction=nonstopmode %.tex

I played with other apps. But this is it. Great little app. Does what it states, and does it well. Definitely my preferred one for writing scripts, smoothly, quickly and easily. And yes, it is free and the developer is really prompt in case of need, and also this is not something you may find everyday. Thank you, developer.

This is a great TeX editor. Easy to configure, easy to use. I've all the basic features for TeX users. There is a fork from TeXmaker, it's TeXstudio. TeXstudio is based on TeXmaker with some advanced features but MacUpdate doesn't list TeXstudio. I just mention TeXstudio for someone who would like to try.

The versions listed here don't tell the whole story. The dev's site has versions of 4.0.2 for both OS's 10.5 and 10.6 (they differ). Also, there is apparently a 4.0.2 version for native Lion+, and another for Lion+ upgrades. I recommend you go there to see what will best suit your needs.

Excellent piece of software. I switched to this from TeXShop. The structure on the left lets you switch between files smoothly. The shortcuts are great, and the autocompletion rocks e.g. if you want to cite a book you just type in "ci" and it will autocomplete to \cite{books} where books is all your references in your bibliography. Simply pick the right one from the drop down menu. Saves me a lot of time writing my Masters thesis.

It is open-source and free. It just does all the things I need, like auto completion, linking latex code with its corresponding PDF output, and compilation quick click. It can also embed the PDF viewer, so that I can use the application in a whole screen without bothering to switch between latex code editor and PDF viewer back and forth. Quite a good work.

Absolutely great job. From the viewpoint of a scientist, TexMaker has the perfect balance between features and ease of use. It works perfectly and is constantly improving. Wonderful job. Another excellent choice is TexShop.

This tool works very nice and is very easy to use. The PDF viewer is a helpful feature. I wish me a feature which helps to find the position of the cursor in edit field and shows me the position in the PDF viewer. Thx

I tried it and like the two-pane layout, compared to having to position windows in TeXShop. However the built-in pdf preview is almost unreadably faint on my system (10.5.8 PB G4). Too bad.

XeTeX and TexMaker DO work together. Texmaker -> Preferences Under Commands use: Latex: /usr/texbin/xelatex -output-driver=/usr/texbin/xdv2pdf %.tex Under Quick Build use: User: /usr/texbin/xelatex -output-driver=/usr/texbin/xdv2pdf %.tex|open %.pdf

This is a pretty good product. My biggest issue is that I am unable to configure it to output with xetex, which is essential on OS X to use the OS X fonts. It would be great to have as an option in the prefs. Currently I edit with TeXMaker and output with TeXShop.

Compiling TeXmaker has become very easy with the latest version of Qt (>=4.2): - Install Qt (grab qt-mac-opensource-*.dmg from ftp://ftp.trolltech.com/qt/source/ ) - decompress the TeXmaker distribution and launch qmake in a terminal: tar jxvf texmaker-1.4.tar.bz2 cd texmaker-1.4 qmake-4.2 open texmaker.xcodeproj - build the project in Xcode (select "release build"), and voilà, you have the application in the TeXmaker source dir, just copy it anywhere using the finder, and delete the sources. Since the Qt libraries are shared, the resulting app is quite small (1.4M on Intel). At first launch, don't forget to give the path to various TeX tools in the preferences (I'm using MacPorts, so I had to change everything to /opt/local).

A little bit hard to install on MacIntel. I had first to compile Qt 4.1.3 (with 4.1.0, TexMaker crashed at start). Then, I had to compile TexMaker, because the pre-compiled didn't find the Qt directory and I found no way of telling it where it was. But I think it worth it. Way better than texshop. A lot of keyboard shortcuts, wizards to make tables and matrices and so on.
