Gnutella client.

Overview

Mutella is a terminal-mode Gnutella client with an intuitive and easy to use interface. Initially written by Max for himself, Mutella has now been released to the general public for the benefit of all of us in need of a solid, high-performance client. Mutella supports all the functionality required to participate as a full-featured node in the Gnutella network. "Full-featured" implies support for file search, download and sharing. Optimized for a high-bandwidth connection, it sets standards for the server performance and stability. However, Mutella is also happy to run on a modest-speed line.

If you would love a background app that finds what you want and downloads them for you, then this is your software. Mutella is a command line application with a web portal. The web portal is more than sufficient for searching and downloading. The only problem (and this may be due to my setup) is that the application doesn't quit via the web portal. I always have to quit it via the terminal or Apple's "Activity Monitor". Despite this desired experience with a gnutella client, setting up mutella to work this way is a pain. I did not have to compile the program, but I did have to learn a bit of UNIX in order to run it as a background application ("process" in 'nix speak). I also have to launch it manually, since I'm just not that good yet; but I only restart my Mac once every 6 months or so, anywayz. I've just gotten very comfortable with accessing mutella via my bookmarks, and I'm very happy with it's performance. And lets not forget the low overhead on my machine's resources! I prefer daemon like programs/process for applications that I just want to run forever and not worry about, so Mutella is the one for me. For those interested, research the "screen" command with in UNIX - it's what allows you to run a command line program even when the terminal application is closed - that's how I run mutella.

You'll also need the readline library, either from Fink or:http://cnswww.cns.cwru.edu/php/chet/readline/rltop.html

A very efficient Gnutella servent for power users. Whereas Acquistion asks for about 27MB of memory on my Mac, mutella only asks for 4MB. But that efficiency comes at the expense of user friendliness. If you want a Mac-like graphical interface with bells and whistles, then this program is not for you. Neither of Mutella's interfaces -- web or command-line -- are very well-designed or easy to use. But once I got over the learning curve, I found that Mutella worked very well. [This review is for Mutella 0.4.3, since Fink doesn't have 0.4.5 yet]
