Omnis Studio overview

Omnis Studio is a high-performance visual Rapid Application Development (RAD) tool that provides an integrated development environment for building web, mobile and enterprise applications - all from one code base. Navigation Menu Control - provides a drop-down menu panel with second level options; the new menu can be switched to Breadcrumb mode (available for JavaScript and fat client)
SMTP Client Worker - allows email messages to be submitted to an SMTP server in a background thread (similar to the SQL and HTTP workers already released)
Subform Panels - enhancement to subforms in a set to be organized in a group of vertically arranged, collapsible panels within a container such as a paged pane
Form Errors - allows you to display helpful text messages, such as data entry errors, either to the right or under controls on a remote form
Complex Grids and List columns - JavaScript Complex Grids have improved performance and support for exceptions, plus some list column properties are now supported in client methods
Centering Object Properties - Enhancement to manage the floating object properties for remote form objects, including the ability to center objects when the form is scaled
Line Colour - Ability to set the content line color ($contentlinecolor) in the fat client tree list and headed list box

The Omnis Studio 4.3.1 release is very stable, and much faster in many areas. Support for the Mac OS look and feel is greatly improved. The product now support Postgres, has a useful application server and integrates with other systems via java and SOAP. It continues to offer a built-in database but most developers will appreciate connectivity to Postgresql and MySQL, along with other popular databases such as OpenBase and Oracle. Support improved tremendously after a management re-organization some years ago. These days the assistance is accurate and timely. The Omnis programming "language" is easy to learn and follows a simple standard "dot" notation construct. It offers a robust set of methods and supports an accessible implementation of object oriented programming and architecture. In addition, it supports a large number of "4GL" style commands. It offers a highly interactive debugger, with immediate "correct and run" at the heart of the tool set. Even with all the new tools available to developers, Omnis Studio 4.3.1 is a good choice for many projects.

The program is extremely buggy, with serious issues that take ages to be addressed, when they are. The documentation is incredibly poor (not by quantity but by quality, information to number of pages ratio is one of the lowest I've ever seen). Support, whey they deign to answer, seem to think that directing the customer to the forums is a substitute to documentation. What's worse, I'm not sure addressing the bugs and fixing the documentation would be sufficent to make it a decent product.
