WinSwitch3.2.1

Access fast user switching via slim menubar item.

Overview

WinSwitch did a superb job with its new Fast User Switching feature in Panther (Mac OS X 10.3), but for users with long names, the associated menu item is a terrible waste of precious Menu Bar real estate.
  • Access the feature through a compact, icon-sized Menu Bar icon.
  • Closely matches the performance and style of the Apple-provided menu, but without all the bulk.
  • In fact, it even corrects some problems with Apple's menu by eliminating certain "daemon" users which shouldn't show up in the list, and by improving the alignment of user icons in the menu.
  • WinSwitch gives you rapid access to the Accounts preference pane, and is completely customizable, allowing you to choose from six different menu bar styles: Standard icon, User picture, Full username, Short username, First name only, and Initials.
  • You can also optionally display the root user, define a hot key to take you back to the login window, and adjust the size of your user pictures both in the menu bar and inside the menu itself.
  • For power users, WinSwitch can automatically run applications and scripts of your choosing whenever you switch in or switch out.

This is the forth one of these replacements for Apple's FUS and this is the first one (other than Apple's) to accurately show the state of the other users. I don't know if the failing of the others is due to a conflict with some other hack I have running, but I am glad to finally have one that works on my system.

Winswitch 3.2.1 doesn't work under OS 10.5--it shows in the menu bar, but it lists no user accounts.

On my iMac/Intel the System Preferences/Security feature of "Requiring a password to wake computer from sleep or screen saver" does not work when using WinSwitch. After removing WinSwitch and resetting User Login then re-starting my iMac the Security worked.

Feature suggestion: It would be great if the menu could show the number of unread emails in Mail; that way I can avoid switching accounts just to 'check my email'. ...a hack to display this on the login screen would be fantastic too !

The disadvantage with the way iTunes used to work was that you had to remember to quit it when logging in to another account, or else it couldn't be opened in that account. Personally, I prefer it as it is now. Anyhow, it's nothing to do with WinSwitch.

I wanted to check WinSwitch to see if it fixed my biggest complaint with Tiger's Fast User Switching, which is the way it interrupts iTunes playback when switching accounts, something that didn't happen in Panther and definitely not what I expect to happen if I'm in the middle of listening to a song and my girlfriend decides to user her account. Anyway, here's for adding a preference for iTunes to keep playing when switching accounts in the next version! :-)

My only problem with this application is that it should be possible to install it without an installer, simply by dragging it into ~/Library/Menu Extras. Especially annoying is the way it forces all your other menu extras to restart...

In this version,it seems that the Japanese localization have updated. But,still, the same part have not been localized into Japanese neatly! The part is in the 1st.part,"Introduction" and the 3 rd. part,"Install files" in the all 4 parts processed window. All the 4 part have localized only the buttons, not the main text body at all. Therefore, the 1st. and 3 rd. parts have been mismatched between the descriptional body text and test on the button below in the part' window. I suggest at least the 1 st. and 3 rd. part ,"Introduction" and "Install files", be localized a.s.a.p.

Needs Keyboard shortcuts for individual users. I can do this with Quicksilver Triggers, but not all users use Quicksilver on my computer. Please, until Apple creates a login window that opens instantly, this feature would be invaluable.

An invaluable addition to every Mac. Way better than Apple's fast user switching menu! Everything about this is well thought out and beautifully done. As for paranoia and the request to have it possible to install without the installer... if you're really concerned you should be looking at the source and compiling from it, not installing from the binary. The source code is available from the web page.

Apparently this needs to be 'installed' by an installer. No option is given to install manually, and I can't see a reason why this would do any harm. If the developer could offer a build sans installer for those of us who are either paranoid or don't want to install WinSwitch for all users, it'd be much appreciated.

Works as expected. It's free and it's better than Apple's FUS. The small icon saves a lot of space on my small iBook screen. No more menu clutter and so far I never had any problems with WinSwitch. Thank you.

I updated and now the menu item has disappeared! How do I re-enable it?! I checked the Fast User Switching menu in the Users pref-pane and, as required, it is off. Now, amusingly, while the previous version did work, it used to prevent my Processor Preferences icon from showing up. Now the Processor Preferences does show up, but WinSwitch is gone. I tried disabling Processor Preferences and loging out/in but to no avail. Any ideas?

I am the previous commenter below. Thanks for your effort! I was just about to report a bug when I saw that it had gone final. If you have two users open, are switched into one bring up the Log Out Dialog (Command-Shift-Q) click on the user you want to switch into and then quickly press enter to dismiss the dialog just before it switches (log out in background) the winswitch menu doesn't read this in the newly switched user. In other words, the list of logged in users might have to be recached when the user clicks on the menu icon (or work out if the list of logged in users is different from the cached version and if so redraw the menu contents). I think Apple's menu follows this pattern, as it doesn't have this problem.

Great software but there are a few (minor) UI glitches in v3.0b. The name next to the picture in the menu is no longer vertically centered. "User picture size inside menu" pref defaults wrongly when first starting up. The "5" above it is unaligned. That's all. Fix that and it's fine.

Does the job better than the Apple original. I think that is the best comment I can give. On my iBook everything is messed up anyway so I just don't need more space covered with my name. Just a small picture is fine enough for me and its purpose.

Great! The keyboard commands were the one thing I wanted and didn't have in earlier versions. Again, I'm only giving it four stars in "Ease of Use" because I have to activate it in each account. (Yes, I'm lazy.) If there was a 4.5, I'd give it that. Features: it does what it promises to do without problems or bloat. What more can I ask for? Ease of Use: see above Value: free, and good. What a deal. Stability: it's never crashed on me, which is more than I can say for most software.

This is a great little app. Would it be possible to add the ability to "ignore" arbitrary accounts? Sometimes I don't want certain accounts listed, and disabling the account in Netinfo is overkill.

Features: 5. It has the features it needs, and the work. What a deal. Ease of Use: 4. Click & Go. The only thing I can think of that would be easier would be a switch-out keystroke, and for all I know, there is one. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is the need to activate per each account. Value: 5. It works as advertised, and it's free. What better value than that? Stability: 5. It's caused me no problems. Conclusion: I like it.

An excellent app which saves heaps of menubar realestate. I would agree with comment below that it would be good to be able to install this for all users rather than having to install individually.

Cool and useful (more and more apps. seem to create a menu icon whether you ask them to or not, and it does chew up a lot of space). The only drawback: when you install it it only works for the current User. Each User has to install it independently. I don't quite see why a User with an Administrator account shouldn't be able to install it across the entire Mac.

Excellent app which helps you save tremendous amounts of menu bar space. I have iCal, Airport, Ink, Sound, and the clock all in my menu bar, and certain apps would cut off some of the icons when switched to. WinSwitch solved the issue for me, and it looks like it belongs there anyway.

This is now not only as go as the Apple menu, it is much better than the Apple menu. It has become a "must have" for me and will be for anyone who uses lots of menus and who has limited menu bar space. It also has better functionality than Apple's product. It demonstrates what Apple should have done and hopefully will in Tiger. Hopefully they will just compensate this developer for his ideas in a straightforward manner.

I'd like this functionality but I'm hesitant to test it unless its easy to remove from my system. Can anyone tell me if its a real menu item or a menu extra? For example, can it be repositioned by cmd+drag like Apples items or is it fixed in place on the left of Apples menus like other 3rd party items. I like my user list all the way to the right, and just the positioning factor would be enough for me to stick with Apples built in menu item.

I have tried all the fast-user switching apps there are and I have to say this one is the best-first of all it has the coolest icon, but if you don't like that you have the option of changing it (something I couldn't find on other similar apps). I would say this is easliy the best user switching app and a must have for any Panther user.

In trying to download this file to my computer, both here and on the developer's site, I get a text file called "download.php." I even tried to download via my "download link" contextual menu. Simply changing the extension from ".php" to ".dmg" will allow you to unpack the file and see the app.
