Spiderweb's done it again! The continuation of the Avernum saga with Blades will not disappoint the avid RPG fan. There are two major bonuses with this newest release: you get to choose from four different built-in scenarios, and you can create your own scenarios with the included editor program (registered version). Using the editor without a thorough knowledge of scripting can prove to be a bit challenging, but it gives you a feel of how much is really involved in creating a scenario. I've played and completed the first included saga and look forward to the next one, and the one after ...

Am I really still playing this game after all these years? Really? (Yes, really!) While it has simplistic graphics compared to Realms of Wowcraft or whatever other fancy games there are now, and the inventory system is kinda kludgy (I keep forgetting that I have certain items, because they're further down the list), I enjoy all the Avernum games mainly *for* their simplicity. I can wander around for hours.

If you've played Blades of Exile, this is a nearly exact mirror of that game. I was hoping SpiderWeb Software would add alot more features, but they really didn't. The nice thing is that i was able to complete the entire first scenario to get a complete feel for the game, unlike the previous Avernum series. But with the game editor, the price of registration is worth it. (I have yet to use the editor and will be sure i can add just about anything i want to my own game.) Blades is small compared to the others in the Avernum series, and i wasn't able to complete all the Quests (not for lack of trying), but if you like quiet, turn-based games, you'll enjoy Blades. The only criticism i have is that you are only allowed 4 characters in your party (plus up to 2 others which are computer controlled). Hopefully in a future release, Spiderweb will add the ability to increase the party size and adjust the Scenario strength accordingly. BTW i ran Blades under System 8.6 on a G3 and never ran into a software problem.

When I started playing Avernum: escape from the pit, I also thought that decreasing the number of characters down to 4 was a big abuse, so to say. Yet, in Exile series characters became alienated because they were just seen as packs of numbers, with the more the better. Now I feel it that way that the characters get some more individuality as the quantity has decreased. That's a big plus.

Smaller compared to the others? You do realize that you can download and add scenarios, right?
