I've been using the free version for a while and I really like it. I just paid $25 (a one time fee) for the Plus version for extra security. The best endorsement for this product I've seen is that it was discussed and praised in the infamous "Security Now" PodCast.

I'm a little unclear, is the VoIP also encrypted?

I don't understand this thing. It's like aim, where you have to log into THEIR server? No real administrator would do this, they want their OWN server app running locally for true security (ala Carracho/KDX). And on top of that, they expect people to pay per-head to use it?

MacUpdate is a listing for BitWise Personal, which is free for personal use and it doesn't have any different architecture than any other major IM system.

On the Professional side (which seems to be what your comment is about), you'd be surprised how many smaller companies don't have the resources to host their own IM server. On a per-user basis, the cost is actually better than many services that you can buy.

As for the security, it's no less secure than something you host yourself--data is sent P2P and so, in an office setting, the data doesn't leave the LAN, just like having your own server.

It's certainly not the right solution for large companies (several hundred employees or more), but that doesn't make it worthless.

Thanks for your comments and listening!

I'll admit this is a promising and interesting IM program, with lots of innovative features. However, wxWidgets (Bitwise IM's cross platform GUI library) is so clumsy, buggy, ugly, and slow on OS X that I can't bear to use this program for very long.

I've heard complaints before about being a bit clumsy, but the "buggy, ugly and slow" aspects have me a bit confused. Can you identify the major elements you found that were buggy, ugly and slow? Also, which OS X version are you on? Thanks.

Upon further investigation, this program seems to have matured and many of the GUI quirks it once had have been resolved. I retract my assessment. Apologies for any bad press.

This is an excellent newcomer to the IM market. The encrypted chat and file sharing are great features of the product.

Although it does lack video conferencing and other features that we should seen in future releases, I find it very valuable for exchaning files with my clients securly.

The program is very stable and urge the author to continue with his efforts. This is a good project.

I checked out your site. I may be mistaken but I thought I read on your site that this chat program requires your service which requires a monthly fee. Maybe I read it incorrectly or perhaps the fee was only for commercial licsense of the service or software.

The monthly fee is only for business use. It is free for personal use.

Poor interface design, feels very much like a windows-to-mac port. No public chat rooms to be found so I wasn't able to fully test the main purpose of the program - to chat.

iChat serves the same purpose of this program already. If they added public chat rooms, and redid the interface, I can see potential.

BitWise offers much more than just chat. If you're just looking to chat, then yes, iChat would fit the bill. However, iChat doesn't quite fill all the same needs -- file sharing, whiteboards, voice, etc are not present (or not reliable) from iChat to other chat programs, such as Trillian, GAIM, AIM, etc.

There's a lot more to BitWise than chat, I'm sorry that isn't more evident and/or useful to you. Best regards.

If it's free, why the developer doesn't focus solely on one platform (Mac), instead of battling on 3 fronts.
Sorry, I'm not quite a fan of cross-platform.

why the hell wouldn't you like cross-platform?!?!

Umm... it's a chat app... us Mac users are a minority and many of us want to talk with people who belong to the majority (Windows and to a lesser extent Linux), so of course it most definently makes sense to cross-platform.
