CLIX overview

CLIX (Command Line Interface for OS X) is a Cocoa application that harnesses the power of Unix. It's perfect for the pros and can be helpful for the noobs too.

The CLIX package includes a starter database file with over 1,100 system commands for investigating your system status, for cleaning out junk files, for getting at esoteric secret settings in your most used applications - and more.

And most importantly, CLIX is infinitely extensible: you can add to it at any time, in any way you please - add new commands, new command categories, new command database files, and so on.

And unlike other systems, CLIX is 100% 'WYSISYG' (what you see is what you get): it's exactly the command lines you would use at a terminal if you were so inclined. So sometime you might remember a command or two and try it on your own.

CLIX comes with commands for viewing all your system logs, for cleaning out browser caches, for pruning and fixing 'plist' preference files, for spelunking in root's back yard, for ridding your system of all kinds of junk, for seeing what your virtual memory is up to, what your Netinfo database manager is up to, and on and on.

CLIX also has its own newsletter and command exchange for in-depth discussion of Unix and the CLIX commands.

Maintain your Mac safely and securely.

This is a remarkable application made by a remarkable developer. It is educational in learning Unix and in fact got me to learn to use the Command Line in MacPorts. Of all the great apps on MU this one is the most useful. You can repair permissions and do many other useful items without delay. I short I give it 5 stars.

Having dealt with Rick for a number of years now on both a business and personal basis I have found him to be an honest, honourable and generous person. ClIX is his gift to the Mac OS community along the lines of 'If you give a man a fish...' has taught me much of what I know of the UNIX command line and saved me many hours - I manage >300 Macs. He does however say what he thinks, often in a non-politically correct manner and as has been pointed out by others, 'not suffer fools...' His products go out of the way to ensure that your security is of primary importance. An extract from a recent XNews focussed on CLIX reads: "Each CLIX command comes with an unseen prefix and an unseen suffix. The prefix zaps the time stamp so you will always detect when sudo is being invoked if that's what you want. A second thread runs asynchronously after every CLIX command to kill the sudo time stamp as well. And the kill operations don't stop at CLIX - they kill timestamps for all TTYs for your own safety." Half of what he writes goes way over my head but it does give me food for thought and makes me a better SysAdmin once I take the time to learn enough to at least understand what he is talking about (technically). If you purchase his ACP product (a must have in my toolkit) it will give you the tools to monitor all traffic and many processes - it has helped me plug several security holes in my network(s) and will certainly provide proof that none of his software 'phones home'. Any one who suggest that Rick is a Black Hat is a best misinformed, and at worst speakin out of the wrong orifice (IMO).

I haven't met this man, nor do I believe too many of us have. I HAVE heard he's had a rough run in life, and may deserve more compassion than he's gotten from the forums here. I've used CLIX for years and I've seen no adverse effects, and I haven't had him take over my machine with my password. I know from reading his blog that he does not suffer fools gladly or at all... I know he's got a temper and isn't Mr Wonderful (my own experience via email with him... I was on his banned list for reasons I've yet to figure out) but he's provided a very useful command-line wrapper, for free. I appreciate that - the other stuff is none of my business.

It seems many other people have had major run-ins with this developer also. Read this page regarding attacks and copyright infringement: http://www.digg.com/apple/What_is_Rixstep_doing_to_Stepwise I certainly would not trust typing in your admin password into an app this developer had created. Make sure you read the above page (URL) before even thinking about using this app. There may be a reason that it's free and that he wants you to use it.

It runs perfectly on my 27" iMac and my M.B.P. I wish that I knew how top add my PASSPHRASE when it insists that I do so. Can someone help me with this. Is this a script that only PAID users can access ? Is that what is happening here ?

Seems like a very interesting maintainence application. However I was unable to download it via Macupdate, Versiontracker or the developers web-site - just an endless loading. Tried Safari & iCab- Perhaps I'll try again later.

Unbelievably rude tech support. Nice app as long as you don't go on their forum asking for help. Incredibly rude and hostile. I very humbly asked for a little help and Rick acted like I had wasted his time simply because I had forgotten to take note of all of the text that had appeared in the Terminal window. Then he immediately banned me from the forum! (i.e. I could no longer post so that he could continue to rant!... unbelievable!

Unnecessarily complicated. Barely any less complicated than the command line itself. Seems to occupy some void between command line and "easier" GUI.

As the song so rightly puts it: Don't judge a book by it's cover. Most tools are just that and not designed for beauty of the eye. Alas, most does exactly what we wont to use them to. A hammer does not have the looks of Carmen Dias, Shakira or Richard Gere. That's fine, since laymen and professionals alike would look for highest standard and performance and rather the brilliance and ability of Maya Deangelo and Stephen Hawking. I , my self, has often been complemented for my looks, but you know, I don' give a rat's arse about it! If my work and performances as an artist does not please my fellow man, then I have failed gravely and should look for another use of my abilities as a tool. Let's all use this space to give reviews and relevant comments. That is what I find really helpful when I look for an useful app, to help me in my line of work. As it says in The Hidden Words of Bahá'u'lláh: In the garden of thy heart plant naught but the rose of love. Works for me!

This application "does what it says on the tin". Very complete default catalogue of commands, and the ability to store custom commands is very handy even if you comfortable with a shell. A search function would be welcome.
