I wanted to ask, is GarageBand a suitable starter app for someone who wants to do music professionally but doesn't have the funds or have the experience with pro audio tools, so i can start small and work up? I have a background in production but mostly audio I am a seasoned guitar player but never really invested in any software to enhance that much.

Yes very much so. Check out macjams.com a website that emerged when GB 1 came out. Most of the music there is created in GB but also from other programs. There is truly wonderful work there. Including the artist that had a small hit with "I love my mac" back then. Lot of good people there as well if you're looking to do collaboration.

Yes, in fact albums have been recorded using it. Indy band the Ultramods recorded their entire album using GarageBand. And some of Franz Ferdinand's Garageband demos made in on their album Tonight. I believe the Gorillaz album the Fall, which was recorded on an iPad was probably done in GarageBand.

Isn't GarageBand just the old Engine from Logic? If so, then its completely groovy... and for free.

I think you could use all the Logic Loops too... Not sure if that's true any more.

I don't know if it's the old engine, but it's kind of Logic Lite. I also have Cubase, Logic, and ProTools, but I often use Garage band when I want to get a song idea recorded quickly.

The latest versions of GB has some real nice amplifier sims and other goodies.

@ RavenNevermore

I always heard Apple bought Logic (Emagic) so they could use the Engine for GarageBand... dunno.

In terms of GarageBand being a "starter app..." My Recording Gear started-out with an old hand-me-down Tascam 3340 10" reel-to-reel and no Mixing Board, so I can dig the whole Minimalist thing! GarageBand is so much more sophisticated and robust.

A good friend of mine, who's a Producer, says you can make a really nice Recording with an iPad these days... and that there are some really good patches for it for Vocals and such.

If you are a home musician and want good recording possibilities with basic, but good enough, mastering and audio effects, need basic multi-track recording, .. it will give you plenty of enjoyment.

I really can recommend this before taking a look at his big brother Logic.

Dropped support of 3rd Party Plugins rendering this update useless for me. Really weird considering Apple invented the AU standard. But I'll admit its a good package for casual musicians.

Don't fret! AU plug-ins are still available in the new GarageBand. See this post => https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5469006?tstart=0

Thanks, I see that now, but its a major leap backwards in usability. Not to mention it doesnt support 32but plugins anymore and neither does Logic, so for those of us with vast investments in suddenly outdated plugin software, the only options are GarageBand 6 or Logic 9

Go to Preferences and click on the Audio/MIDI, enable Audio Units option.

Now close Preferences window, and select a track in your project. Now click the Smart Controls button in the top left side on the window. It will bring the Smart Control panel on the low right side of the window. In this panel you will see the buttons "i" and "Master".

In order to you see the Audio Units, click both "i" and "Master" buttons to reveal the Audio Units panel.

Now place your cursor over the Audio FX area and click on the small up and down arrows to select an Audio Unit. It is similar to the Audio FX area in Logic Pro X.

This is a great upgrade to earlier versions. I also suggest the video lessons available through the App Store.

Thanks for adding the fact that we can now import our work from our iPad into GB on the Mac. Strange that Apple failed to list this in the update info!

Garageband 5. doesn't seem to work on a lot of people's G5s (Certainly not my 3 year old G5) even with 10.5.7.

It's so slow it's completely impossible to use... and almost impossible to uninstall.

If you are on a G5 and having problems, google "Uninstall Garageband" and reinstall the last version (4.1.2)

FYI:

It seems there is a fix for GB and G5s. You need to connect the two Optical Audio ports together with the requisite Toslink cable- the In to the Out.

Fantastic entry level quality recording software. Managed to persuade the head of music at school to buy 6 intel imacs by showing him GB on my iBook! The podcasting studio is so simple to use. The GUI make over is well worth getting the upgrade!

I was surprised that no one had commented on GB since last summer, 2005. Was the current version even out then?

GB is a great app, although to use it productively you really out to have a MIDI device (like a keyboard) connected, and having a little musical ability doesn't hurt either.

I think the iLife 06 version is a major improvement over the previous one.
