getTunes is a Mac version of myTunes, a small application that allows users to download music from local Rendezvous-shared music libraries (instead of streaming the songs). Don't steal music.

Hi Guys,
since yesterday I have iTunes 4.8. My version of getTunes is not working anymore.
When do you release a new version of getTunes for iTunes 4.8.
Thx and have a nice day!!!
Does not work at all for me at iTunes 4.7.1 / Mac OS 10.3.7. I cannot add any song and I cannot even quit the app :( Please improve getTunes, it worked for me once (on iTunes 4.6) !
This works fine for me with iTunes 4.7.1, with one minor error. I add a bunch of songs to the download list, click download, get an error and the first song on the list is removed from the list, I click download again and it downloads the songs. I did not need to use the patch.
I don't understand why I need to be a user with high privileges to use this program. If I use it as a normal user it asks to me for an authentication password (I guess it's the root password) but everything I provide I get the same window again; until I cancel and the program stops.
To NW,
You are a successful speaker, one simple comment and get a lot of response.
My opinion is that, the features of this application might meant for some other function, not as what you think "Stealing". If you think that all those people download this application purpose is to steal music, then all transport driver are danger, cos all transport able speeding. All cheff are danger as well, cos knife able murder people....
What I trying to say is that, as long as you know it's illegal, yourself don't do it that's all. There are still bad people found their way to steal even without this application. In fact you might making people realize how to steal music with this application after read your comment.
Hope you understand.
All the best and Happy New Year.
visit http://sourceforge.net/projects/gettunes/, there you can find a patch that fixes the problem with 4.7, you've got to have some expertise with Xcode though...
beside this problem, i can't find any hosts, probably because I'm on a wireless network, does anyone know how to fix this?
how do i get to play songs i get from get tunes if it asks " this computer is not authorized to play" and wants anther password which would not know as i got the song from a network with out the password. is there a hack to get around this?
This is a great little app, i find it very useful because at home i have many different songs on different computers. I love this application, but just a downside: why must it ask for a password and does it have to be admin because it does not work on some users on my computer.
Why can't I download 2.3.6? It keeps coming up saying that there is nothing for it to attache it to. I did delete my old version, is 2.3.6 only like a piggyback to the old version?
still not working with 4.7 -
good in older versions -
also- to those of you who think this will ruin iTunes. It won't because it doesn't allow you to get AAC copy protected files. All this does for you as share music of your own network and download it - which is very convienient if you have different music on different machines.
excellent program.
you have to cut and paste this link, but it works with itunes 4.7. It automatically downloads then you just need to start it.
http://www.yellojakit.com/gettunes.zip
any ideas why it won't accept certain administrator passwords? I am entering the password I use to log onto my computer when prompted, but it does not accept it and asks again. It works for friends of mine who run the same program, so I'm not sure.
i accidentaly deleted my old version of gettunes and now when i try to download 2.3.6 it says that it has nothing to attache to? Is 2.3.6 only a patch up of the old version so that it will run on itunes 4.7? If so where can i get the old gettunes program?
great free app. awaiiting more user friendly fix to let it play nice with itunes 4.7. or a pointer on where to find/how to revert to itunes 4.6 since i already deleted my dupes.
Did iTunes 4.7 break this app? When I try to download music from a shared library, I get an error "Error: Selection contains non-shared music" yet I can listen to it fine usinf iTunes.
Any ideas?
This thing is so awesome; the only thing that would improve it is if it came with an invite printout. I am planning to have a music share party where this application is handed out to guests and everyone shares through it. Whenever more than two powerbooks come by it becomes a GetTunes party anyway, it might as well print invites.
Dear "Anonymous"
If you can't see a reason, then you are definately not much of a thinker. It's a good thing we don't rely on YOU to write cool software!
My wife and I each have our own powerbooks and this software allows us to share MP3 files that are NOT copyrighted. (believe it or not, they do exist - especially for CREATIVE people who tend to create their own MP3s from time to time!)
Basically, if you can't think of a use, it's because your stupid, not because one does not exist. Also, if you have something negative to say, have the intestinal fortitude to use your name (unless your parents were equally bad thinkers and they named you 'Anonymous' - in which case, my apologies for making fun of your name.)
I think its really noble of the developer to ask people not to steal music, but is there any other reason to really use this software?
I'm not seeing one if there is.
I can't get past the enter password window... i enter my login password and the window disappears and then reappears waiting for me to re-enter my password. What's going on here?
G5
OS 10.3.5
iTunes 4.6
I finally got the program downloaded and it stopped asking me for the password BUT now no music will come up...it says that it is not shared music, even though it IS and can be played on my iTunes. Suggestions, anyone?
possibly the most genious invention ever...thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you. I am eternally grateful for everything you have done for me, for the community, for the world. Genious. Pure Genious.
I was able to load several songs into the DL window with getTunes 2.3.6, but I could not add them to my library afterwords. Worse still, since quitting the program, there are no more users in my shared library! Is this a result of a getTunes glitch?
I loved 2.2, and I think 2.3 is far more polished looking than just running the program through Terminal, but... 2.2 worked, where 2.3 does not.
I'd appreciate help if you can give it. Thanks.
Hi, i sucessfully downloaded and installed getTunes, but when i try to 'add selection' it comes up with "error: selection contains non-shared music", even though it IS shared music on the network. Any suggestions?
After I installed this excellent app it won't let me eject the volume "getTunes" and won't let me delete the disk image file either. It says they are both in use even though I have no apps open.
Any suggestions?
Thanks a lot.
When launching getTunes I get the following message:
Cannot launch Java application
Uncaught exception in main method: java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: com.apple.eawt.Application.getApplication()Lcom/apple/eawt/Application;
Is there an english translation of this around!
I am running OS 10.2.8, iTunes 4.6 and have Java 1.4.1. Any help would much appreciated :-)
Works pretty good. Is quite slow because it has to check eash single file that is added to the library.
Ie. not possible to select 500songs and download, because it's gonna take 20min adding them and only after that you can start DL them :)
Other than that, - excellent tool!
bug: Files are not saved to the location set in the prefs [/Users/MyUser/Music/getTunes/], instead they are saved directly to the trash??? :)
2.3.6 seems to have a lot of trouble preserving id3 tags. for the time being, it would be nice to have v 2.3 available, as the current version is not completely usable. 2.3.6 also seems to simply skip downloads at times. that said, I am fond on the "download selection" feature, which makes the process of transferring many albums very easy.
im using 2.3.6. gettunes puts the songs into itunes, but when i try to find a particular song to send to a friend, i cant find the song anywhere; that is, UNTIL i looked into the trash; whats going on?
I JUST updated to iTunes 4.6 from 4.5 and had no problems retreiving songs from another user's playlist.
I only tried a group download of songs, but my assumption is that if that was successful, a single song would also work.
Thanks again. :-D
I am not sure what to do at step 3 for a network interface???
"3) Open Preferences and select the network interface you want getTunes to listen to. Click OK."
Thanks!!
At first sight the protocol doesn't seem to have changed between 4.5 and 4.6. GetTunes should work. Post a reply to this message if 4.6 is causing you trouble.
I need help quickly. i am trying to get some music on my computer before school lets out. When i go to download the music once it is added in the get tunes screen nothing happens. I push the download button and it does nothing. For some reason when i add the song it starts to play for about three seconds then it wont let me ownload
The security update that first came out after itunes 4.5 broke gettunes, and I haven't heard of gettunes fixing it. But now there's another security update....anyone know if this breaks gettunes? On the one hand, I'm on a mac, I don't think I really need to worry about the security stuff.....but I'm still kind of uncomfortable not downloading it.
Could somebody post info about this, who knows the whole deal?
getTunes 2.3.5 seems to work quite wonderfully for the most part. However, it refuses to download songs whose song name beings with a quotation mark, e.g. "Heroes" by David Bowie. This is probably some minor bug, easily fixable?
I found out what was causing the disconnections after a few songs were donwloaded. It was a one line fix.
Apparently, in the new version, iTunes now checks if a header called "Connection" is present and set to "close"; unless it is there, iTunes closes the connection, ironically enough.
The one line fix is this: (Search for "connection.connect();", and insert the following directly previous to it)
connection.setRequestProperty("Connection", "close");
Glad I could be of assistance.
Thanks for reporting the preferences bug, it's going to be fixed in the new update soon. I'm a little busy right now to deal with the usability of getTunes, but I've got good ideas on what to change.
Could people with problems due to the new security update describe the symptoms in more details?
Great work, but one problem....
If you change any preferences in the preferences dialog, they are lost the next time you start up getTunes.
There are no calls to readPreferences() in the code anywhere. Adding readPreferences(); at line 83 of getTunes.java seems to fix things.
Jim
Ok, when I download the program, everything is fine. I copy the getTunes icon onto my desktop, and open it... nothing happens. No asking for passwords, nothing. Does anybody else have this problem or know what to do?
gettunes is great, and always will be, simply by what it allows you to do. But this version is a major dissapointment, at least for me. The new features of recent versions would be exciting-file names included, selecting and downloading without playing each manually, etc.... except that it's way more buggy, for me. I can't download more than about half an album at a time. Can't browse and add stuff while downloading, or adding the files for future downloading. Way, way too often get errors.
Of course, still glad to have it, for what it does, but it doesn't do it so well as it used to.
Still having problems with regard to the HTTP proxy. I still have to disable it to download music which is quite annoying. The must be a way around this? Great program otherwise, awesome stuff!
It would seem that after the most recent security update, getTunes no longer works. Perhaps Apple actually figured out a way to stop this software from working...?
I had the same problems last night...
once you have installed getTunes load up iTunes and play the song from someone elses shared library.
after a couple of seconds the name of the song appears in the getTunes window, you don't have to play the whole song, just play it until the name appears, repeat for all the songs you want to 'borrow'
Once you have your list of songs in the getTunes window stop playing iTunes and DON'T play any more songs until you have finished downloading or it buggers up the download for some reason.
Press 'download all' in the getTunes window. all songs should download into a automatically created new playlist called getTunes.
if it buggers up just quit getTunes and iTunes and reopen them...
HELP!HELP!HELP!... I would greatly appreciate if someone could help me out. My gettunes 2.3 works on itunes 4.5, until you go to click on the "download all" button.Nothing happens. What am I doing wrong? Please help, school's almost out and I'd like to downlaod some things before I go. Thanks so much.
Can I just say that you kick ass? I know that GetTunes was better when iTunes was 4.2, but you kick a ton of ass for getting getTunes back up off the ground just a few days after 4.5 came out. I freaking love you man, I have reccommended your program to all the other mac users in my dorm.
This is something you can try if you've got problem with the password:
- In the terminal, try typing "sudo echo password_ok" and when requested, type in your password for getTunes. Don't worry if you can't see you password, it's suppose to do that.
- If you see "password_ok" then you're using the correct password and something else is wrong. If this is you, reply to this message with your system setup (version of OSX, Java runtime version, etc)
- If your password doesn't work, make sure you're using your admin password. I think if you're using OSX 10.2 then try your root password.
For people with downloading problem:
- Make sure you disable your proxy before you launch getTunes.
- After adding songs, try to download them asap. Also, if you play other songs without adding, when you download it would become 'Stuck".
Do not stream songs while downloading. iTunes sometime sees this and prematurely disconnect, resulting in a failed download.
I agree the current method for queuing songs aren't ideal, and I'm developping "select then add" function in the next release.
Well, I'm still happy, and still gloating that gettunes works with itunes 4.5 and mytunes doesn't, but I'm really hoping for another update or mini update to fix a few things.
First, I used to be able to play the first song, and then press skip (or the f11 key, courtesy of PTHitunes notifier) until I got to the end of an album, and it would download all the songs. Now, if I go to fast, it skips stuff, or mor accurately, fills in skipped songs with multiple copies of one song I'm downloading.
Also, independent of going too fast, I seem to be getting multiple copies of songs pretty often, and I didn't play them twice, or start them twice, or anything of the sort.
Third, and I think most annoyingly as soon as I download it stops playing the song I'm playing in itunes, and generally causes interference when I'm trying to use both apps at the same time (even though they go with eachother). So, I can't effectively browse and download at the same time.
Any tips for me, in the meantime?
To the developper: I enjoyed getTunes v2.2 very much, but now v2.3 keeps asking for my password, even though I followed all the instructions in Read Me and I can't use he program. Can you please post a solution?
i just updated to itunes4.5 and gettunes 2.3 and everythings working ok... i selected every song to be downloaded and i would go to click 'download all' and nothing happens... what am i doing wrong?
It says it downloads the songs, I see the data "transferring", but the music doesn't show up anywhere. Not in the getTunes folder, not in the Music folder, not in iTunes, not in the Library, not in the getTunes playlist, nowhere!!!! Where are my songs? What have I done wrong, and how can I retrieve the data?
so, um, there's probably something I don't know about this program, but why can't I get rid of the old version of getTunes now that I downloaded 2.3? Whenever I try to drag it to the trash, it tells me that "the disk "getTunes" is in use" and it won't go away. why?
I like that the get getTunes is compatible with iTunes 4.5, but does anyone else experience problems with the program hanging up when you try to actually download the songs from the que to your disk? it just seems to freeze. Any suggestions, or is this a bug?
How would you rate getTunes app?
