iTunes Switcher

Create multiple iTunes libraries.

Overview

iTunes Switcher can create multiple iTunes libraries and switch between them. This program is helpful for managing very large collections, keeping your iPod's library separate from your computer's, keeping your music separate from your audiobooks, etc.

What's new in iTunes Switcher

Version 1.0.1: Changed build style from Development to Deployment, so that the app should now run on computers other than the developer's own. (Oops!)

Would not launch. I double clicked on it and it looks like it tries to run and I see the dock icon breifly appear for 1/2 second and then it quits. No docs as to where to install and when it should be running. Checked the authors web site and did not find anything. Running Panther 10.3.2. Maybe it's the newer version of iTunes ( 4.2 ) getting in the way?

BE WARNED: I only knew the folllowing after I launched the program and it started copying my whole music library (8.42 GB) to a new folder it had created in the "Application Support" folder in my User Library. I figured it was doing so, because I could hear my Mac chewing on something. It was only after hearing this and watching space of my hard drive disappear one GB at a time, that I read the following in the help files iTunes Switcher installed on my Mac: "Additional Tips To save hard drive space, especially with large collections, you may wish to go into iTunes Preferences, in the "Advanced" tab, and deselect the option to "Keep iTunes Music folder organized." If you allow iTunes to organize your music, then the process of duplicating your library will also create duplicates of your audio files, doubling the amount of space they take up on the disk. On the other hand, if you organize your collection manually, anywhere outside of the "~/Music/iTunes" folder, then the files will not be duplicated by iTunes Switcher." I would suggest using Libra instead: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/13728 and the develper's site, which has a helpful explanation of the difference between Libra and iTunes Switcher: http://www.roydesign.net/libra/

it's easy. option-click on the download link, OR click and hold on the download link and wait for the contextual menu to appear and select "save to disk" (or similar words)

This software is potentially VERY useful! Having gone this far in developing it, the developer ought to finish the job by fixing its various flaws, even if this means more $$ to prospective users.

I've been looking for an application like this for some time to switch between different iTunes libraries on my TiBook, an external FW drive, and a server. The app launches OK but when it asks me if I want to duplicate my existing library I click on OK and nothing happens. No library appears in the "listbox". Very frustrating after my hopes were raised.

The developer has stated in one of the threads in these reviews that this new version (1.0.1) fixes the 'crash on launch' issue. it does launch for me (iBook 900MHz, OS X 10.3.2)

To Developer: I think most appreciate your effort, but since you already put in the effort, doesn't it make sense to go the extra mile, & test your program for basics like proper installation, stability, etc..? Program crashes upon launch.

Yes it does make sense, and yes I did test it. If you are experiencing problems, _details_ would be the most helpful thing.

It would be far better to send such voluminous info to the developer in an email rather than use this review space for such detailed matters. Please refrain from this practice in the future, thanks.
