Analyzes your iTunes library and creates personalized musical recommendations.

Overview

Note: Goombah is no longer under development, and it is no longer available for sale.

Goombah interacts with iTunes to help users discover new music, rediscover old favorites, and download free tracks based on their taste. Goombah analyzes each member's iTunes collection and displays their closest matching members and their libraries. For each user, it recommends tracks that their matching members really like that are not in the user's collection. Goombah (beta) has more than 3 million tracks in their members' collections from which to draw recommendations.

If you have a previous release of Goombah, you may see a "The file is in use" message when you try to copy the new Goombah over the old one. Simply drag the old version into the Trash and then copy the new version into the Applications folder. The old one can then be deleted after you log on the next time.

does it? a senior member of a criminal gang...an easily defeated foe in Super Mario Bros... It's just sort of nonsensical to me. Is there an offensive meaning I'm not aware of?

I'm sorry, but am I the only one who finds the name offensive and a turn-off? I can't bring myself to even download it.

I love this product, I've had it for awhile now and it just keeps getting better and better. I am always finding new music that I love and the Free Music Fridays are always diverse and appealing to everyone. This program is definitely top notch and ground-breaking. Where else can you find new music you've never heard of that you'll surely like within a click of a button?

Post From Gary Robinson's Blog: Well, the day is finally here. We have been revamping Goombah in a big way for a long time. Over the last week or so we've been rolling out the first public updates to ourGoombah beta since version .613 more than a year ago. (It's for Mac and Windows.) From the outside, I'm sure it may have seemed that we'd slowed down or even moved onto other things. Wrong! The company grew, and we've been pushing hard on all development fronts. The user interface has been revamped, cool features have been added, and the recommendation engine has had major improvements. We just wanted to wait until things were really right before we put it out again. One of the great new things: we are making available free music that is downloadable to any device including iPods. Every week we have Free Music Friday, when we'll make new music available from great acts such as Richard Thompson, 50 Foot Wave, Aimee Mann, and Janis Ian, all of whom have tracks available now on Goombah. With regard to the recommendation engine improvements, sometimes I'm actually kind of stunned at how great it's working at this early stage when we're really only coming out of the door. It's based on collaborative filtering, so as our user population grows, it will only get better and better. (That's a reason to tell your friends about us, hint, hint!) Goombah is still in beta testing, so we don't guarantee you're not going to run into bugs. We DO guarantee that we'll greatly appreciate any bug reports and put a high priority on fixing them. Overall, however, it's stable and works. There's no reason not to use it now. From time to time I'll be offering tips in this blog. Tip #1: Tune List Settings for My Library. Default Goombah recommendations are based on all the music in your collection. But for many of us -- myself included -- a lot of the music in our collections is there for sentimental reasons or because of just checking stuff out. It doesn't necessarily all represent our current tastes. So, we'd like to tell Goombah not to use it for recommendations. To do this, click My Library in the table on the lower left, and click the tab for List Settings. You'll see a check box next to each track. Uncheck all tracks from the artists you feel aren't representative of your current tastes. To do this quickly, you can select a number of tracks at once by shift-clicking. Then right-click (or control-click if you have a Mac with a single-button mouse), and select the option to Uncheck. Tip #2: Make new searches. My favorite thing to do is click the "+ New List" button in the lower left, and enter a list of artists. Goombah then finds other members who are unusually similar to you in liking those same artists, and generates recommendations for other artists who have something in common with all the ones you entered. It works really well. Just try it.

I've been following this app and the new version is a huge difference. I am enjoying it. My recommendatins were very interesting - both new artists and ones I had forgotten about. I spent a long time browsing the libraries of people who matched my taste. Some guy has 140 artists in common with me, and I've found some new stuff he has that I really like. There's an adventure setting that gets you different results - cool. They've added ways to do new searches, but I haven't tried this yet. This version has free music downloads for the first time (I think)and they seem pretty eclectic. These tracks go into an iTunes playlist and it works great. I need to try all of the features before I can say what else is needed.

Very disappointing. Poor performance, hilarious recommendations (Jack Johnson????). And it's "iTunes centric", which is not a very good idea.

I've been following this app and had mixed results until now with .9601 My recommendations are very interesting - some new stuff and artists I had forgotten about. You can uncheck tracks in your library which should change your results. There's also a way to adjust the results with an adventure setting.(I haven't tried that lately but it's a cool idea). I've had fun browsing the collections of matching users - there's one guy I found who has 142 artists in common with me and I've liked lots of his other music. There's also free downloads that are new to this version, I think. The free music seems pretty eclectic with some recognized artists. I downloaded a few to iTunes - they go to a separate playlist which is cool.

This app is really terrible. I've had poor performance and really bad recommendations. It really doesn't seem to know much about music at all. I like the p2p idea, but this execution is not good.

Have you looked at Audioscrobbler? Does the same sort of thing and works with the last.fm streaming radio service, and apps other than iTunes. The way Goombah looks at all your iTunes history rather than just monitoring new tracks is a great idea, but I don't think that would work for anything but iTunes. Guess I'll run both and see what happens. If you hear about an aesthetic implosion taking out part of Houston, you'll know not to try it.

Great Product. Obviously 20 years of code writing for the author has paid off. My hats off to you!
