Heh, I'd call that a feature, not a bug.

This game brings back many memories, great to see it still alive and well.

I still get dizzy playing it, but it's worth it.

Why does this developer give such erroneous information about where to get a copy of Descent 2 where all I've gotten of the suggestions is strike outs. I own Descent for OS9 but that wont work and the one that you could get from MacUpdate D2X, is no longer available and I don't even know if that would work.

Dude, I hate people who get stuff for free that has cost others a lot of work and then complain about not getting an extra service that doesn't even really have to do with the product on top of it. You are responsible yourself for finding a working copy of the Descent data. It works with the PC data available on www.GoG.com though, but only on Mac OS X 10.5 up.

Where does one get a copy of Descent &/or Descent 2? They aren't available anywhere in "jewel box" form, from what I can see.

You can also officially get a downloadable full version of the original game from Good Old Games (www.GOG.com) for little money.

Okay, the latest 1.9.116 version still crashes at launch on any of our G3 iBooks, even though they have the video ram qualifications to play the game. They work on older version 1.9.66 and previous, but the 3rd party missions are not available on those versions.

On the PowerMac G5 and the PowerBook G4s the latest version continues to work fine and restores the functionality of 3rd party missions. That's a good sign. Just wish all our iBooks would also work with this so everyone could join the same mission.

This is a much needed work in progress, and hopefully will see fulfillment in a truly stable, cross-platform release in the not too distant future. As it is, if you are a Descent lover, remember to keep the incremental updates around, just in case a new update breaks on your particular setup. That way you can get back to the older version and continue playing at least.

1.9.69 and 1.9.91, the most recent updates, are broken on our iBook G3s. 1.9.69 just freezes in the startup screen, leaving a black, blank window. It eventually crashes after a few minutes. 1.9.91 crashes almost immediately on launch. So we continue to use 1.9.66 as the most recent version that works on those.

1.9.69 and 1.9.91 do work fine on the G4 PowerBook and the PowerMac G5.

3rd party missions also no longer work on any of our systems, iBooks, Powerbooks, or G5s. They just are not being read by the program. I've heard from other Mac users that the missions recently stopped working for them as well. Hopefully we'll get a fix for this. Someone is looking into it.

Overall, the game plays very well, considering the difficulty the developers must have in attempting to do what they are doing without much funding or support. Kudos to them for the time and effort put in to what I think was one of the all time best 3D games ever devised.

Many thanks to the makers of this for creating it, AND keeping it up to date! Plays great on my Mac mini, it's wonderful that this old classic is once again playable on modern operating systems. Make sure to read the readme document included with the download and follow the instructions carefully.

I ended up not being able to just copy the plain old files directly from my Descent 2 CD and instead had to actually install Descent 2 on my Windows XP machine, then copy the files from the install directory to the data folder (which you create) on my mac.

Once again, top notch!

I also can't run Descent 2 (D2X) on my iMac G4 700Mhz, 10.4.3. What gives? It runs just fine on my PowerMac 466 Mhz, 10.4.3 at work! (hee hee)
Really though, why is this a problem? Do different Macs, even those running the same OS, handle files differently? If any developers read this thread maybe this bit of info will help. When I restarted my Mac, which I had to do because Descent got stuck on the black screen at startup, the disk image and all of the files were nowhere to be found on my computer. Even searching with Spotlight turned up no results. Like I never even downloaded it. This sucks, I want to play some Descent at home! From the other responses, I know that this has something to do with my particular computer. Can anybody resolve this problem once and for all?

d2x-xl running on one computer but not on another could rather have something to do with gfx drivers.

If files are gone after resetting a machine during a program freeze, these file could have been open, file info kept somewhere in memory, and due to the reset that data wasn't written back to disk.

I have at least heard that you can destroy your whole file system on Linux/Unix boxes that way, and OS X seems to be pretty similar to Unix.

You can find the songs in mp3 format zipped on www.planetdescent.com. This will not allow you to play them in D2X though, but at least you can listen to them.

D2X-XL (a different D2X version) will support mp3 playback somewhere in the near future.

tracy,

as I take a 2nd look at your comment, I start to believe that you haven't read the (changed) installation instructions on my Descent 2 site. D2 data folder has been made more Mac conformant and is now /Applications/Games/D2X-XL.

tracy,

a crash log had only arrived at my e-mail address after I had contacted you.

The crash log hints to D2X-XL not finding the D2 data on your machine.

Your post states a data path that is not being used any more - see the latest installation instructions.

You declined the offer to get the source code yourself and help us in fixing your problems.

You obviously are not acknowledging the fact that this is project done in our leisure time, brought to the public for free, where support is welcome.

My gosh. I sent in two crash logs. I even explained that crash logs append data at the bottom of the list, not the top. I put the program in all the places suggested during my attempts to get it to run (the share folder; the games folder; etc) I placed the SDL in first one, then the other, and finally both frameworks folders. I re-installed the original game; I downloaded and installed three recent versions of the software.

Finally I sent off a second crash log.

In return for this effort, I received letters villifying me as "a butt"; suggesting that I get the code and compile it myself and so on.

Now when you consider that I went to a lot more effort than any of the several -other- people who posted the same problem (crash), I'm not sure why I was singled out for attack.

I tried to politely simply refuse further communications, but instead received a long letter letting me know what an idiot I am, and telling me to "read the instructions" (which I'd done about twenty times.)

Look: there are many other people having trouble with this software. I -understand- that you're doing it voluntarily. But so what? That's YOUR choice. I tried to help by providing crash logs and so on.

PLEASE: don't attack those who are trying to help you. If you don't like the criticism, pull the product.

Finally: PLEASE stop emailing me.

tracey,

this is not a platform for you to start a flame war, and I told you before to stick with the truth.

#1 I only received a crash log after contacting you from my e-mail address.
#2 I kindly and in an absolutely acceptable way asked to get the source code yourself and debug the program in order to help us.
#3 I received a very unfriendly letter from you expressing your general antipathy and what you thought of me. You got the appropriate reply.

Apart from that, I have said everything before.

To finish this, you have been no help at all. Instead, you have been complaining about the program in general, been touchy about advice given to you (emphasizing that at the age of 60 you don't need advice from me), and have generally addressed me derogatorily. My request to download the source code yourself and help us in fixing this issue (as you wrote you were a programmer), which was politely issued and a call to support us, has obviously been completely mistaken by you as an arrogant remark leaving you alone with the problem - which it wasn't at all. If at all, this says something about your perception of things around you.

Stop making this place a forum of your negative feelings.

Very good Port. Keep up the good work. I just want to know one thing. Is it possible to enable the cockpit view? In descent 1, the Cockpit looked very pixelated (320x240), put in Descent II the cockpit looked awesome in hi-res. Is there a way to enable the Cockpit view in this port?
