Pixel art editor.

Overview

Pixen is a pixel art editor designed for working with low-resolution raster art, such as those 8-bit sprites found in old-school video games. With innovative features like a unique color palette system, patterns, layers, and high-zoom support, Pixen packs all the tools pixel artists need in an intuitive, Mac-native interface. Pixen also makes creating frame-by-frame animations fun and easy.

Note: This application contains in-app and/or external module purchases.

What's new in Pixen

Version 4.1:
  • Added a new Dark appearance that can be unlocked via in-app purchase (and also help support the project)
  • Some tools are now up to 10x faster when working with larger images
  • Fixed an issue where the Text tool would stop working on animation documents

While Pixen is great and all, I'd like to recommend another free, opensource pixel editor, called aseprite. I'm posting it here since there's no entry for aseprite on MacUpdate. To Pixen developer(s), I don't mean to draw attention away from Pixen (which is getting better and better!), but it's good to have many choices. http://aseprite.org/

I like Pixelmator a lot but if you need to edit small pictures this is much better imo Very easy for pixel perfection. Both essential graphics apps!

Versions after 3.5.3 no longer work with Mac OS X 10.6. The developer only provides links to the latest version, but this is no good for those of us still using Snow Leopard. To MacUpdate and/or the developer: Please provide a link to Pixen 3.5.3!

Cool app. From free to $10 is a steep value judgement. I'd bet the developer would convert a lot more users to buyers (supporters!) at half that price, if only to access the convenience of managing the app via MAS. Just a thought.

Unfortunately you have to remove any beta releases of Pixen to install 3.5 from the Mac App Store.

thanks for the heads-up, hced. the latest update (0.9.1) apparently fixes the permanent high cpu usage. there's also grafx2, a multiplatform old-school pixel pusher. https://code.google.com/p/grafx2/

I really enjoy this program. It is easy to use, and I use it for all sorts of stuff. I am having a problem, however. I am trying to make an animation that is 32 frames long (5 pixels wide, 1 pixel tall). When saving it as a GIF, it will say "Exporting GIF... (31 of 32)" forever. Sometimes I have to force quit pixen in order to try again. I can, however, use the pixen format for the animation, but that is no use since I can't use the animation for anything then. Can pixen only save a maximum amount of frames in a GIF?

This is as of version 3.0 I don't know if this problem exists in the recent update.

The world's greatest program, with the world's greatest operational glitches. I have great hopes for some promising future in this app, though, since there's some fresh activity in the project's github repository. Anyone feeling emotional about this app's history, torpid development, contrasted by its great potentials and the fact that it's now moving forward again, should get involved by helping the developer reporting bugs and whatnot on github, really. I'm holding my review until it's out of beta or stable enough to use prime time.
