What’s new in version 7.1

Updated on May 30 2018

Version 7.1:
  • A full recompilation has been made to be compatible with High Sierra, and as Universal Binary to keep being compatible with both old (PowerPC) Macs and recent (Intel) Macs.
  • The "How to intall it?" paragraph of the documentation has been updated to explain how to install and launch the Application in particular under Mac OS 10.13 High Sierra:
  • Under Mac OS 10.13 High Sierra, if you're launching the Application for the first time, maybe Mac OS X's GateKeeper (which you can configure in the "System Preferences") will refuse to launch it because you've not downloaded it from the Mac App Store (but from our website). In this case, instead of double-clicking on it, all you have to do is to right-click on the Application's icon, and then select the "Open" menu. A message will appear in which you'll be able to confirm that you want to launch the Application (even if it was not downloaded from the Mac App Store from an Identified Developer).

Old thieves never die; they just come back to rob you again. EVERY AplhaOmega product is poorly written, overpriced, and available elsewhere with more and better functionality and for free...often within the OS, itself. Buyer beware!

How to remove the startup chime for free: *MUTE* your Mac before restarting or shutting down. When your Mac reboots the next time, there will be NO startup chime. I said FREE! ;-) OR you could buy one of the recent MacBook Pros, which no longer have a startup chime, ever.

They're baaack; hold on to your wallet! AlphaOmega is a bunch of thieves who charge excessive prices for poor functionality that's usually available elsewhere...better and for less.

"The removal of the chime has been improved. " Whoopie-doo! Whatever that could possibly mean, I still don't want to pay $11-odd for the pleasure of it when it can be done for nix with, oh say, StartNinja.

To temporarily disable the startup sound, just press the “Mute” button on your keyboard (that’s the F10 key on a MacBook) before shutting down or restarting your Mac.

To permanently mute the startup sound, open the terminal and type "sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%80" (or sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%01, or sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%00 or sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=" " depending on some models).

To restore the startup chime, type: "sudo nvram -d SystemAudioVolume"

There, I just saved you $11.

I can't understand what "The removal of the chime has been improved" means! It's a one-trick application i.e. it either works or it doesn't!

I never understood why anyone would want to stop the startup chime. You only hear it once when you boot. I never found it annoying.

I purchased there complete set of software last year. At the time chime stopper version was 4. I was able to download most of the apps I had purchased however there was a problem trying to download 5 of there apps chime stopper being one of them. Last month i tried to download the apps and now there are not avaiable (meaning the version 4 which I paid for) When i emailed the developers they said my purchased apps were no longer available for download and i will need to purchase and upgrade all my purchased apps. I explained that i purchased the apps just last year and that removing apps that people have paid for was ridiculous! I never got a reply back from them. AVOID THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tried it and it does not work!!! I need chime stopper because i startup my iMac in the early mornings before going to work and that chime wakes up my wife and then there is h*** to pay for doing that. Also their price is ridiculously high especailly since it does not work in Maverick 10.9.5 and who know what will happen when Yeo hits the market.

These thieves are back with us once again with their poorly constructed, ridiculously overpriced software. Anything AlphaOmega sells is a GIANT RIP-OFF! Don't be the fool who sends them to the bank!!!

The startup chime isn't just some kind of acoustic window dressing. It's a diagnostic tool (if certain things go wrong with your Mac it changes). Someday a repairman may need to hear your Mac's chime. You're a fool if you mute or ochange it.

According to tinker tool system, disabling the startup chime on 10.7 and newer is no longer supported by the software.I would suggest a freel alternative that should work for anyone is to hit mute on your keyboard before restarting, this will mute the chime and just unmute when the system is restarted. I found this out by accent when I frogot to unmute my sound and I restarted and wondered where the sound went on startup. I have to say though, unless i'm unaware of it, I'm suprised that someone hasn't come upt with a way to modify the firmware to insert a custom sound. Unless the chime is in the firmware that can't be flashed, then that's understable. Just some thoughts, hope the tip helps someone who wasn't aware of it. Note, powerP macs may not work with this rule I believe their sound management was different from intel based macs.

Absolutley hilarious! They say a fool and his money are easily parted, etc. Then again, when I see that there have already been over 1600 downloads of this from Macupdate (which indicates that the devs may have pilfered at least $32,000 out of this app?), maybe I’m the fool. I wouldn’t have the balls to actually target the nievety of uneducated Mac users so brazenly, but these dev do. Hell, I have this scary feeling in the pit of my stomach that some small part of me actually admires how unashamed the devs are. I shall now humour myself and have a look at their website to see what other goodies they have in store for us….

Is this real? As John Sawyer pointed out, this must be some sort of joke. 20$ is a complete rip-off. Get TinkerTool System for 14$ instead. It allows to disable the start-up chime and much more for only 14$ or try one of the free alternatives.

I'm guessing this utility and its price are a deliberate joke on the part of the often-criticized programmer, to annoy people--note also the absurd version number: 4.2.-2147483648d-2147483648

A rip off. Charging this much for slapping a badly written front end on somebody else's work is a disgrace. AlphaOmega software are a disgrace.

LMAO... MacPilot has this function, does a few hundreds other things and costs even less than this. AlphaOmega releases should be allowed only on the first of April.

Sorry, but I couldn't help leaving a comment when I saw the price tag on this--it is absolutely ridiculous! $20 for a tiny utility that performs a single function? No one should, under any circumstances, pay for this "app." As other posters have pointed out, there are free or low-cost alternatives that will do the same thing and in some cases much more. If you want to spend $20 on a system tweaking utility, get MacPilot which can mute the startup chime along with hundreds of other tweaks. AlphaOmega Software is perhaps the biggest running joke in the Mac software community. Their apps are good for a laugh and nothing else. I'm actually shocked that the company still exists, but clearly someone is buying this crap...

It looks like the only change between the previous version and this version, v2.4, of Startup Crime Stopper is the addition of an Italian localization (thereby giving the developer more publicity, once again, for his grossly overpriced app). What's next for version 2.5, Latvian localization? I can hardly wait. By the way, the previous commenter's suggestion that you can go for Tinkertool System instead of this app is right on. TinkerTool System is around $10 and is one of the excellent full featured maintenance apps with a plethora of great, useful features, including one to mute your Mac's startup chime. Now, if AlphaOmegaSoftware could come up with something really innovative and brilliant like TinkerTool System(but I won't hold my breath, sigh...), I just might change my otherwise low and contemptuous opinion of that software company.
