Please don’t think of this as just a deinterlacer — it does a great many things, it does them very, very well, and it does them completely FREE. I encourage you to download and try it, as it’s superior to many such shareware and commercial tools. Over the years, I have evaluated more than 40 different video manipulation programs — both multi-function apps and those dedicated to specific tasks — and JES Deinterlacer is the very best standards converter (PAL > NTSC or NTSC > PAL, etc.) and deinterlacer I’ve ever used (fast too). It has been around for at least 11 years, is frequently updated, and the developer is very responsive, a real pro. Here are some of JES Deinterlacer’s capabilities (from its manual): ◆ Deinterlace digital movies (various ways), change field dominance, and reinterlace; ◆ Standards conversion (scale and change frame rate, for example PALNTSC), and inverse telecine (NTSC -> film); ◆ Crop, shift, and add edge; ◆ Simple color correction; ◆ Reduce noise (using a temporal filter), removing jaggies, deblocking; ◆ Change encoding (gamma, video range/full range, compressor); ◆ Fast/slow motion, reverse movie, progressive in/out; ◆ Lossless M-JPEG field handling; ◆ Flipping video vertically and horizontally; ◆ Copy/implement track geometry, both classical (track scaling, etc.) and new (image description extensions for pixel aspect ratio and clean aperture). This developer also offers a few other great, free video applications, including JES Video Cleaner (http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/17540/jes-video-cleaner/), which does a superb job of reducing noise, removing logos, averaging two movies, removing cross-luma and brightness variations, etc. BTW, I don’t work for and have never met the developer. I’m just a big fan of great video freeware and shareware, and I’ve been using this one for nearly a decade.

An essential piece of software, still working its magic in 10.9.5. :-)

One of the very best video utilities available — free or otherwise. Many don't know this, but in addition to being the best deinterlacer, it's especially good at standards conversion (converting video from PAL to NTSC and vice-verse), better than all but the most expensive commercial apps (like Compressor, Episode Pro or Squeeze). The developer updates it frequently, helpful, and is very open to suggestion. A major must-have.

Waow! I've found nothing else for slowing down a movie as accurately and fast! (even if it's not its main purpose, it was exactly what I was searching) N.B.: my goal was to find the steps in a salsa dance movie... ;-)

Interesting Tool! I would need it to resize Video (MPEG, progessive) from my digoicam. Resize works but without filtering noise reduction. But i see that noise reduction is only selectable if Video input is interlaced?! Doesnt such noice reducuction or other filters cant be used on progressive video ? (Bug or it is so planned / not possible to add filters for progessive video) Thanks!

This software only seems to convert from NTSC to PAL and not the other way?

This is an excellent tool for cleaning up video. In addition to deinterlacing -- which it does very well -- it can do deblocking as well. I've been very happy with the results so far. And it's free!

This is fantastic, I got stuck with a commercial PAL/NTSC conversion which has a lot of hand-held camera work and animated photos. When authored to DVD there was too much judder. I compared doing the conversion using usual MAC software and a commercial PC product and this is the one gave far superior results, I will use it from now on. A Big thank- you to the developer

Just done one test and I'm already a fan. Why do we continue to suffer the slings and arrows of the many inadequacies of Quicktime! Thank you for filling the gaps Mac leaves behind.

I second what Dr. Zoom says - this app is a worthy addition to any video pro's toolbox. One great feature is what JES calls "Double Movie Duration" which basicaly turns each field into a frame. This almost always produces better slow motion than interpolating frames.

I have been using this app for a long time and it has remained one of the best tools around. Developed with a deep understanding of the processes, constantly updated and improved by a developer. 5 star all the way.

GREAT software Very simple to use, considering how hard to understand deinterlacing can be... And very fast and efficient too. A must for every video amateur

4 out of 6 .Mov files created with Imovie 4 makes Jes Deinterlacer 2.6.5 crashes ! I cannot understand the reasons. I have imported them into Imovie HD without any problems but it doesn't change the mov. file ( quicktime ) 6 the problem stays the same.

I just tried converting PAL->DV-NTSC with no sucess. After the program opens the progress window, it immediatly crashes. No error except apple's standard "do you want to send a bug report?" I have to trash the preferences every time b/c JES opens right up to the same project, and promptly crashes again. I'm using 10.3.9. I really wish I could use this program, i've found no other that converts PAL->NTSC without smearing.

I'm using version 2.5.1 and will upgrade soon. I used the product to remove the artifacts in moving objects (shudder, comb-lines, and double-vision) that are the bane of most amateur video cameras and the "normal" mode on my videocamera (I try to use the frame mode on my Canon Gl1 & 2, but the service people have a habit of changing it back to evil normal after they clean it). Once the video is deinterlaced, you won't see any artifacts during normal play AND you can step through frames slowly and see sharp, clear images as long as your shutter speed was reasonably fast (e.g., 1/500 sec or faster) which can be attained by shooting in sunlight, and my camera can set that manually. Some footage still retains a few comb-lines, but they're so unnoticeable that I haven't needed to tweak the parameters to get perfect results. My only gripe is that the file-browsing dialog box is slow to read directories, so I just drag files from the Finder to the input box. Great product that has saved my pre-2000 footage - even stuff transferred from my old Hi-8, non-DV camera. My 700 Mhz G4 imac converts footage at a rate of 3 sec for every 1 sec of footage - nice for a slow computer. If you're getting double-sized files, try the default settings, so that you aren't creating full-sized frames at 60 frames per second (30 is normal). Butterfly-lovers should consider videotaping butterflies in "normal" or cheap camera mode, then used JES Deinterlacer to create 60 frames-per-second video. Sure, the files will be bigger, but you'll have twice as many clear steps of your subject in flight. Finally, let me put a plug in for another footage improver - FX Stabilizer plugin for iMovie, which removes tremor from wind shake and handheld shots. Both products do a wonderful job in retaining all of the detail from the original video, even when applied to footage one product after the other.

for deinterlacing and making DV look like film JES is the Biz. I edit DV for underground Cinema and It just work.. Sure it'll crash...If you don't know what your doing.. so forget Media Cleaner. I wasted 6 months only to find that JES did what I wanted in 5 minutes. I'm hoping for a for a real version with a OSX GUI. I'd pay £20 for that!!! Keep up the good work A+

It works great for me. Being a film student, I can not stand the look of straight interlaced video for any serious footage. When I want change the feeling of footage i am working on from "This looks like News footage" to "it feels like film" (well, as close as you can get for free). This will not (unless you play around with the settings) really change the colour and dynamic range of your image, it will just change the feel of the movement.

Call me naive, but why would I deinterlace my QT movies? I do create movies using FCE, some I'm curious what the value/purpose is.

well, i tried to use this app, seemed to be great, very easy, nice work by the developer, really. then i noticed about 1/16th of the way into my .avi file i was already at 12.6GB! for the new file. this is out of control. there's not a HD available today that could hold an entire DVD movie based on the sizes i saw. unless you've a dedicated HD with 200GB free, i would think twice about putting all yer marbles into this one. maybe there's something i don't understand though. i mean, this seemed like a great app, but the deinterlacing was making a file WAY to freaking big for reality
