I love this product. I can't live without this product. I use a trackpoint keyboard with my Mac and I can't scroll without this product AFAIK. What irritates me about this product is its always behind on the updates and the developer won't let the product start if the running OSX version doesn't match the currently release. Marc has mentioned before that this is to ensure the integrity of the product. I understand on DOT revs that come out on a whim, this is fine, but with major OS releases, we've had the beta's and now the GM for a while now and to not have the final code ready on release day is why I dock one star. I don't know what other things Marc has going in his life, but I hope somehow the product can more closely match the release dates in the future.

When I restart or log out/in to my computer, version 4.4.8 will not automatically work. I have to go into System Preferences to manually switch on Smart Scroll. Same with version 4.4.7, so back to 4.4.6

Smart Scroll remains the best software that allows you to naturally grab, drag'n drop/scroll with a tablet and a stylus. To become perfect, it would take two things: - that it is less CPU-intensive; - that the Smooth Scroll option has the same scrolling fluidity as MOS.

Thanks for your feedback, fleur2metaline-1. Smart Scroll uses CPU when you move the cursor, to know which application is in use, so it can apply your settings for that application. Also for Hover Scroll. When you are not moving the cursor, it uses 0 - 0.1 CPU. I'm planning a new scrolling method, if I manage to get it to work.

Marc has always been punctual with updates when a new system is released but this time, he has even anticipated it. Thanks! This clearly shows his immense care and interest for all users who like me can’t live without this invaluable utility. If Smart Scroll doesn't open at login, or doesn't start, drag the helper application to the list of Login Items, in Users & Groups in System Preferences. Also drag it to the Privacy /Accessibility list, if needed. You can access the helper application by clicking on the ˇ sign on the upper right corner of the main Smart Scroll window.

Hello again Marc, I regret to say that the new version I just commented about works fine with Safari, but is broken on all other applications on my iMac! None of them function any more! I had to restore SmartScroll to the previous version to return to normality. I don’t know if it’s my mouse (Logitech - Performance MX) or there’s another issue. If any other SmartScroll user experiences these problems, then please let us know. Thanks.

This is about Smart Scroll. Here's a question they asked me: I’m curious why you gave Smart Scroll only 3 stars, I suppose you've ran into problems. Would you please say what they are, so I get a chance to fix them? Here's my answer: I've had Smart Scroll since 2012. During that time, the thing that impressed/depressed me most of all about Smart Scroll was the lousy service. It has been virtually non-existent during most of that time. TODAY, I noticed that they were pushing the 4.3.9 version. Great, except-UNTIL TODAY--they have been trying to push the 4.1 version and I kept telling them that I have had that version for many years, so why are they calling it NEW? Well, I never got a satisfactory answer; in fact the last answer they gave me took about a week and was of no help at all. Good old Smart Scroll. (Some things never change) People have been known to grow old and die while waiting for an answer from them. Well, they'll give me no more gray hairs, because I won't be expecting anything from them ever again.

I asked you that question almost 7 months ago. It is visible just a few comments below. And you are answering today, which finally gives me an idea of what the problem is that you're dissatisfied about: if you've been seeing notifications saying version 4.1 is available, that's likely because you have been running a previous version that had an update notification bug. Which has been fixed for many, many months. If that's not it, you're welcome to contact me using the email given on the Support page on marcmoini.com, and I'll do my best to assist you.

Smart Scroll is awesome. I primarily use it so I can engage scrolling with a button on my Wacom stylus, but there are lots of other handy features as well. The developer is a friendly guy and quick to fix any issues that pop up with system updates. Been using this for years and always happy to pay the very infrequent paid upgrades. Smart Scroll is in my macOS EDC list.

You don't have to pay to update.

The only situation so far for a paid upgrade is if you paid before OSX Lion, in 2011, and you want to use Smart Scroll 4 on one of the OSX versions since that one. And then you would need to pay $7.

I'm curious why you gave Smart Scroll only 3 stars, I suppose you've ran into problems. Would you please say what they are, so I get a chance to fix them?

Hey, I've been using SmartScroll for a few years now and recently moved to Smooze. Here's why: 1. Auto scroll is a lot smoother., specially when slow short distance scroll is involved. I don't know what makes it choppy with SmartScroll but it always feels like it skips a few pixels when the cursor is close to the starting point. 2. Grab & Throw feature is a lot better there and and is also animated. Throwing a page is a different experience to what I was use to with SmartScroll. SmartScroll do have a setting for it but I never got it to work nor to feel natural. 3. Grab Scroll and Auto scroll can detect if you are hovering over links so pressing on a mouse button over a link will click the link instead of activating the scroll. 4. The animated scrolling customization options there is wild. I couldn't find any other app that animates scrolling that way. 5. Cheaper (Though I already paid for SmartScroll in the past I think it something that should also be mentioned) I'd love to see some if not all the above implemented into SmartScroll. Thanks

I checked to see if there's anything I can improve in Smart Scroll.

1. Hover Scroll is more progressive in Smart Scroll, to allow finer control over scrolling at slow speeds. I'll add an option to reduce the distance you need to move cursor before it scrolls fast, for people who prefer this.

2. Grab Scroll: What do you mean by "animated"? All I see is the same bias towards fast scrolling versus precision, which you can get in Smart Scroll by setting the "Scroll faster" to 4x or more.

This same bias also results in a single tick of the scroll wheel scrolling two full lines. Smart Scroll lets you adjust this for finer scrolling, which many users prefer.

3. Are you sure? With Smooze when I hover over a link, it's not detected like you say it is. But Smart Scroll does include this, with the "Suppress button's usual action" option.

4. If I get enough requests for changing the acceleration and deceleration curves for scrolling animation, I'll add that.

5. I wouldn't be able to keep supporting Smart Scroll if I reduced the price. I wonder how long this developer will be able to last.

Thanks for your comment, it gave me the idea to add that option for Hover Scroll!

For me, SS is a must. By itself the jerky scrolling action on my Kensingtom Expert trackball is terrible, SS is the only way I've ever found that smoothes it out. It used to be that every time a new OS was released SS broke and it took the developer several weeks to produce an upgrade, leaving me to struggle in the meantime. This time, the developer is very much to be congratulated for producing an upgraded version prior to the release of the Sierra GM, which eliminates this problem. This is a long overdue policy change!

Mainstay that continues to be an app that should be installed on every Mac. Vastly better scrolling options than Apple's built-in scrolling. The hover scroll feature alone is a pleasure to use once you get used to it. The developer continues to make sure it works with all the latest Mac OS versions and software over the years and is very diligent and responsive to customer requests over the years. This is one of the top 5 all-time third party apps on Mac. A must-have for Mac newbies and seasoned vets alike.

I think it works great with a trackpad. So much so that I find this app indispensable and I wouldn't update to a newer OS until Smart Scroll works with it. Just hover scroll alone is amazing for reading long web pages, etc. once you get used to controlling it to one's taste.

You should download the trial and try it yourself and play around with the settings. I can't remember the last time I've had stability issues with this and I've been using it for many years now.

I also am sorry the day i bought this software only because of the system the developer uses to update. That is, i startup my computer ( generally every morning ) and bam SmartScroll warns me that my install has expired. Now with the "latest" Beta 13 the download is the same: Beta 13. Checking the history at their web site shows it is actually Beta 14. However, where is that Beta 14 ? Then the second problem for me is that i went ahead and installed the download (Beta 13) without checking to see what version it is and now SmartScroll stops working.

I am really disappointed with how the developper has programmed the updates by not allowing the user to update when the user wants. Meaning there are some software i have that i am happy with the version and really do not want to update but the developer of SmartScroll dictates that i update.

I use this application because it is the only application that can make my apple mouse work the way I want it to work and not the way Apple wants it to work. Not sure i like the idea of it being a preference pain. I prefer having it in the menu bar or dock or actually both for fast access. Going to the System preferences to get to Smart Scroll for me is a huge pain in the ****studio. It's funny how developers do these changes without asking users for their input or ideas. Still give it a 5 star rating.

I prefer the preference pane approach. My dock and menu bar are already cluttered with enough stuff. (Disclaimer: I use Bartender, so ya, that solve the problem. But not everyone has the cash to buy that, so some will still have this issue.) Why not just create an alias of the Smart Scroll preference pane and put it on your desktop or in your Finder sidebar? That will open it up immediately with a simple double click or, with the latter, single click. One way or another, you're going to have to navigate to it if you want to change it.

A bit if jerkiness upon initial scrolling, but a restart put things to right, e.g., smooth as glass. A great product with great support. Couldn't be happier.

Where version 4.0b5 was smooth as silk for me, under 4.0b6 scrolling is almost completely unresponsive. (I'm running OS 10.9.3 on a late 2012 iMac.)

P.S. Still barely responsive— and very slow and jerky when it does momentarily respond— even after repairing permissions and running Disk Warrior. This is with a Magic Mouse.

No problems here. I'm running OS 10.9.3 on an iMac (2009) and a Logitech mouse.

I found the problem: For "Inertia+," I hadn't checked "Must lift fingers." Once I did, all is well. (Interestingly, I've never checked "Must lift fingers" in the past, and never had this problem... but no biggie.)

This version has definitely corrected flaws verified in previous versions like jerky initial scrolling and as such. Many thanks to the developer. Fariborz AMIRSHAHI - Verona (Italy)

i have a big problem with 4.0b4 ! After some time surfing the CPU load of SmatScroll becomes huge and the only way to return to the normal is force quit. I can reproduce it every time, no matter what sites I visit, safari extensions enabled or not.

Even with the minimal limitations as discussed previously this still ranks five stars. Exceptional support from this developer.

Truly worthy of its version number. Glad to have scroll wheel and multi-touch devices separated as I use both. It’s a beta, so I do not have concerns with its current state. Marc has always responded to my queries and is one of the smaller developers I support and hope to see in the Mac world for years to come.

So, in this version, I have to close the preference window every time I restart Smartscroll?! This is not a good idea. Please give an option to change this. Thanks.

I wrote to Marc about this issue. His reply is quoted below: "I haven’t made this clear enough yet but the feature is there, if you close the preferences window the app icon should leave your Dock. And then to get the preferences again you can use the menu in the right hand side of the menu bar, under a small Smart Scroll icon." What would be even more helpful would be if it could be set to open with this window shut at login so that one wouldn't need to close it manually to get rid of the dock icon. Otherwise a great utility with superb support.

Thanks Macus. I hope Marc will fix this before the final release. Superb utility otherwise, I second that one.

The developer has released, and has posted on his web site, a public beta that works with v10.9.2.. Two observations: • The new SS is now a stand alone app, rather than a System Preference. • There is now a menu bar icon to access the preferences and check for updates. AFAIK, it works without issue, though one may still need to add or remove specific applications.

You could have issued your warning without giving half star to this gorgeous utility. This is not a correct way of leaving messages!

Sorry I rated the app, but the MacUpdate software forced me to do so. While I agree that the older version was neat, and was, overall, a very good app, I am not sure that is is proper to recommend an app that does not work with the present system. For Example should one really recommend a Haxie that has not worked in years?

Hello Steve Hechler, if you choose "comment" instead of "review" from the popup menu you needn't any star to rate the application. Thanks.

Again v4.0b1 works fine (or at least seems to) with Sys 10.9.2 but again one cannot find it as a new update. I found it by going to MacUpdate, using the "Search Mac Apps" to find "SmartScroll", and then going to the developer page. There MUST be a better way.

Stable, more options than you could ever want, a great value. BUT... the update process as documented in other reviews is really annoying. Ever time OSX is upgraded you must wait for the author to update the product as well. I'm a paid user and I keep coming back but when I need to use my trackpoint keyboard and smart scroll is out of service, I revert back to USB overdrive. That product hasn't had an update in two years and works no matter what version of OSX you are running.
