Eloquent overview

Eloquent is a free and open-source application for research and study of the Bible. It is developed specifically for Mac computers running Mac OS X.

Eloquent allows you to read and browse many different bibles translations in different languages from Hebrew to Albanian. As well as reading devotionals, commentaries, dictionaries and lexicons, it also supports searching and advanced features such as services so that you can access the Bible in any program.

And because Eloquent is based on the Sword project, it is compatible with a growing collection of over 200 texts available in over 50 languages.

I love eloquent and use it a lot. However it does not work on my new silicone MacBook Pro. It seems to be incompatible with Rosetta as well as the new system of big Sur. Hopefully it will be upgraded very soon. Thank you.

Really really good Bible app - I prefer it to Logos. Manfred is a good guy - he seems a little serious, but he's a good guy. I asked him about "MacSword" which is my go-to Bible app, and he was quick to point out that Eloquent is just as good, and that conversation brought me back to the app. I also discovered the ability to copy and paste text into the user module for a customized commentary. I copy and paste my epub NAC, chapters of Isaiah here and there depending on what I'm working on, and it keeps track of it verse by verse. Something that's hard to find in other Sword project apps. Does anyone know where to find MacSword online anymore? Or if it's being kept up? Just kidding, Manfred!

Hi Manfred, Can you help me with Strong's Hebrew Numbers that no longer work. I deleted something else, then lost the function. I tried to remove and redownload the whole app again, but it appears to remember me and when I check to update the module, it tells me I have it, so cannot reinstall it. I tired removing and reloading it, but nothing seems to work.

Overall I'm glad this exists, but one problem I had suggested to fix years ago is still there in the latest version. It still does not let one pre-select the Highlighted Text Color for a Bookmark or remember the color choice for it. In the main Preference Pane there should be a checkbox and selector for Bookmark Text Color or the Bookmark Edit Pane should remember the settings As is, one needs to check the Highlight box and select the color each time the Bookmark Edit pane opens. I don't know if this is too complicated, but maybe check how some Firefox Highlighting plugs handle this so elegantly. There is also a problem that I can't bookmark at all, unless I click each verse to open in a separate window, which is not the case in v.2.2.12.

Who is making decisions in programming of this software? It's really going downhill! The new name "Eloquent" instead of the nice old MacSword is plain ugly and without any biblical meaning. The new icon of the program is extremely ugly. Version 2.3.5 is still massively bug ridden, extremely slow even if you only have the standard KJV bible installed and nothing else. Try search! Unbelievable slooow, even when it grabs the power of both CPU cores shortly before the beach ball of death comes. In comparison to MacSword 1.4.4 which I still use Eloquent 2.3.5 is pure junk. MacSword 1.4.4 is very fast even with dozens of bibles and commentaries installed. Search is very quick. Sometimes it crashes, but it's a nice program. I'm not gonna try Eloquent anymore, it's a dead end with no future. If MacSword 1.4.4 stops working I will move on to another bible software. Be warned! Instead of Eloquent load the old MacSword 1.4.4 from their website. It still runs on OSX 10.6 (and should on Lion)! BTW: MacUpdate should update to the new icon of Eloquent!

This might be a bit harsh, but MacSword 2 simply doesn't work. The GUI is totally unintuitive, illogical and very hard to use. Nothing works like expected. The Search function doesn't work at all. The program crashes all the time (hangs with beach ball). Parallel views of bibles is not synchronous. Scrolling sucks. This program is not even an Alpha release. Totally useless. And it is totally slow on a Intel Duocore with 2,4 Ghz (MacSword 1 is light-speed fast). Developer: Scrap MacSword 2 and restart working on MacSword 1 again. I am using MacSword 1.4.4 and I'm very happy with that great software!

I have two problems with the latest version: 1. Multiple ref string entries into the search-field do not produce the respective text in the window. The page remains blank. 2. Bookmarks with multiple refs, which are given a title and saved show up in the sidebar often without the title. To get the title shown, the bookmarks must be dragged out and back inside their folder. Both the above occur intermittently.

Until today I had been one of those annoying, smug Mac users who had never experienced a crash and/or hang. And then I updated to MacSword 2.2.5. Don't get me wrong, my iMac is certain it has died and entered into heaven with 2.2.5, so beautifully does it do its job (finally Greek with accents!). My MacBook Air, however, will not run this application. It launches once, then quits - "unexpectedly". I have followed the usual advice; I have deleted all kinds of files and things; I have effected clean installs, etc. As a PhD student in theology, I am at a loss, and am considering sack-cloth and ashes as final recourse - though I reserve any hint of optimism, alas . . .

I agree with BigMacMissionary. I have tried again and again to use MacSword 2 and can't get it "put together", but have continued to use MacSword 1.4.4 instead. I have several Macs from PPC 10.4.11 to Intel 10.6.4.

I, too, can't seem to be able to get it to work on OSX 10.6.3. I have tried deleting every file related to any prior versions of MacSword (the Library files, etc.), and on a fresh download and install, I still get the same "MacSword quit unexpectedly"...incessantly. On the "report" that it offers to send to Apple, it says the following: Date/Time: 2010-04-18 19:27:44.413 +0300 OS Version: Mac OS X 10.6.3 (10D573) Report Version: 6 Interval Since Last Report: 557563 sec Crashes Since Last Report: 11 Per-App Interval Since Last Report: 4 sec Per-App Crashes Since Last Report: 10 Anonymous UUID: AAB26C49-E9EF-48CF-81B5-AF9994C2C79F Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS) Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000000000000 Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread Application Specific Information: objc[20142]: garbage collection is ON Thread 0 Crashed: Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread 0 org.crosswire.MacSword 0x0006f8c7 sword::SWMgr::augmentModules(char const*, bool) + 1351 1 org.crosswire.MacSword 0x0001a1c3 -[SwordManager reInit] + 869 2 org.crosswire.MacSword 0x0001a9c1 -[SwordManager initWithPath:] + 219 3 org.crosswire.MacSword 0x0001a8cb +[SwordManager defaultManager] + 82 4 org.crosswire.MacSword 0x00008996 -[AppController applicationWillFinishLaunching:] + 117 5 com.apple.Foundation 0x97a811cb _nsnote_callback + 176 6 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x94cf73f9 __CFXNotificationPost + 905 7 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x94cf6e2a _CFXNotificationPostNotification + 186 8 com.apple.Foundation 0x97a76098 -[NSNotificationCenter postNotificationName:object:userInfo:] + 128 9 com.apple.Foundation 0x97a83475 -[NSNotificationCenter postNotificationName:object:] + 56 10 com.apple.AppKit 0x92978f0d -[NSApplication finishLaunching] + 493 11 com.apple.AppKit 0x92978909 -[NSApplication run] + 79 12 com.apple.AppKit 0x92970c85 NSApplicationMain + 574 13 org.crosswire.MacSword 0x000070aa start + 54 I don't understand any of this, except that I see there is a thread crashing. I was very happy with MacSword prior to updating to Snow Leopard and having these problems.

Ever since MacSword turned 2.0 I have been unable to get it to launch successfully on my 2008 iMac. I have commented on this a number of times before in this column, been told by the developer that it must be something about my specific system setup, that I should describe precisely what the problem is (which I do as best as I can), and the problem will be discovered and solved. I am trying once more to get a better result, namely a *solution* so I can use the app. My setup is: late 2008 iMac 24", 2.8 GHz Intel, 4 GB ram, OS 10.6.3 (the newest iteration). I have a modest number of apps I use regularly, most of which are in wide use by Mac Users. Hopefully this time will prove the charm. Tom G

There are some problems with Notes: - When Notes are dragged into Folders, the original note remains where it was, creating thus duplicates. - Editing both Notes and Folders is neither easy or obvious Having said this, I am very happy with the direction and progress of MacSword. I am spending less time with OnlineBible and more with MS. Great work!

I was very surprised that a religious tool is named "Sword". Is that the way christians want to evangelize? I hope not, that had been too often the case.

Alright! This edition works in Snow Leopard 10.6.2. Installer still needs work - a ReadMe txt file is needed badly. After scouring the various web sites, I found the Movie instructions (which a ReadMe should state the URL for) and pulled down the latest zip's of the texts I wanted - I manually installed them - makes life easier but good work on the module-installer function. One complaint - it's irksome that after selecting a text, I have to type a chapter to get it to open in the workspace - the start of the text should just appear - then if I want to skip ahead and so forth, I can type in what I want or choose it from the right-side panel. IMHO. Looks like the application is on the right path. Needs better instructions in a ReadMe text instead of having to go to a wiki, a home page, et al - or at least the ReadMe should give the direct URL's to these pages.
