The Game for Mac0.8

17 April 2006

Turn-based shooter game.

What is The Game for Mac

The Game is a top-down, turn-based adventure game. You guide a team of hardcore soldiers on missions to rid the universe of the big, nasty, evil aliens. Sometimes the missions involve killing everything hostile that moves. Sometimes they need you to rescue something valuable. Sometimes you need to blow something up.

If you have seen movies like Aliens or Starship Troopers, this should be very familiar to you. If you haven't, go watch them already.

The Game is written with Java, so it works with most major operating systems. It is also free software, with source code available.

We're killing aliens here, not people. I'm sure once I saw an alien trying to take over earth or whatever die right in front of me, I'd be more than happy. As for the game, it's pretty decent and better than I thought. Even for running on Java, it's very nice.

Could you post a spreadsheet of character/ monster/ weapon stats? or even better: a promotion checklist. bty does experience and kills count for promotions? A way to allow promotions inside character creations at the expense of points would be cool too.

Still play this one once a month or so. It would be cool if there was a new update. If you haven't tried it yet, give it a shot. I don't know if any more updates are planned but we're holding out hope!

I still enjoy this game and am looking forward to more updates. I would really like to see some missions with ALOT more enemies as my experienced group is not finding much of a challenge. Virtu, can a SGT advance to LT? If so, how? Thanks for the great game!

The author here. Steve Still: You should be able to get the flame thrower when your leader is a captain. However, it is such as expensive weapon you will have to decrease the number of assault rifles in the team. This issue didn't show up until I added the persistent mission teams because earlier, the soldiers automatically got assigned the best weapon available when you selected them. I will probably add some visual feedback on the available equipment points. The reason for the weapon limits is balance, obviously. You don't want five guys with heavy weapons running around killing helpless monsters. Another point is that the heavy weapons are HEAVY, and limit the number of action points your soldiers have. Thus you will need higher motivation, training, and leadership to compensate. These attributes, incidentally, also have a large role in getting promotions, although other attributes such as luck matter, too. Finally, the rules are still being tweaked, so if you really think the progress is too slow, I can increase the amount of experience the soldiers get on a mission. But that would probably need to be balanced by making the enemies somewhat more deadly, too... ;)

This is a prety sweet game. I must admit, I've played it for about 30 hours....(yes, I know....PATHETIC)...but it IS pretty fun. It has been a learning experience, and I have learned a TINY bit about programming, as I went into the code to figure out some of the rules. (ie-the rules are VERY vague...especially those regarding promotions). Cool, fun, interesting game. Was hoping to get the "flame thrower" when my leader hit "CAPTAIN"...but to no avail. Kinda' lost interest as I see countless hours still to be played before I get the next promotion. P.S. Don't even WASTE YOU TIME firing pistols at battlebots.....seem to have no effect. Thanks for the cool game! Give us da' rules PLEEZZZ!!!

I saw this and was hoping it was a derivative of the classic "Fubar vs. the DEA", or one of its follow-ups. I guess not. Oh well :/. Maybe I'll try it out anyway...

Plays smoothly... Those damn rippers like to follow you around. Picking off the brutes are fun, too. Especially the bomber brutes, nothing fills you with joy as much as watching a bomber brute chain reaction. As for the Cyber Brutes, hope you don't find more than one at a time. If you're up for some good old fashion "kill 'em all", chose a kill bob mission. If you like reconaissance, chose a "rescue bob" type mission. The Game's got it all but trip wire bombs, reinforcements, and blowing through walls.

'The Game' is the greatest. Well, no it isn't. It's still in development, and hopefully we'll see full isometric ninja action from our good friend, Virtu. Until then, just download it, and hope it works with your Java. Visit the official chatroom for the game, at irc.afternet.org, channel #ev.
