Rhythm pattern game.   Free

Stepmania is a rhythm game. Arrows pointing in different directions scroll up from the bottom of the screen and the player must hit the corresponding button in time to the music. The game can be played with your hands using the keyboard, but the real fun comes when using a sensor-laden "dance pad".

StepMania has Game Modes similar to Konami's Dance Dance Revolution and Andamiro's Pump It Up, Amuseworld's EZ2Dancer, and Konami's Para Para Paradise. Support for more games is planned in the future.
What's New
Version 5.0 beta 2:
  • [NotesLoaderSM] New algorithm for converting negative BPMs and stops to warps, more closely matching the behavior of old StepManias.
  • [MusicWheel] Add the ChangeSort method to the Lua interface to allow the theme to switch sorting methods.
  • [Player] Add a "Column" parameter to the StepMessage to allow the theme or chart to discover which column is being triggered.
  • [ArchHooks] Unix: Move UserPackages to Packages in the per-user directory, and remove Data from the per-user directory. Users who have installed packages to UserPackages will need to migrate them to Packages instead.
  • [Player] Fix a stutter that can take place when mines are skipped during warp segments. [phantom, wolfman2000]
  • [TimingData, ScreenEdit] Fixed behavior in the editor whereby making changes to Song Timing would unexpectedly change all charts to Steps Timing. (Thanks to DJ OMiY for reporting and isolating the problem.)
  • [Screen] Allow overlay screens to accept codes.
  • [TimingChanges, ScreenEdit] Fix a bug in the editor where adding BPM changes that differ by a very small amount from the previous BPM change were not added at all. [vulture/wolfman2000]
  • [ScreenGameplayShared] Fix routine mode. [djpohly/FSX/shakesoda/wolfman2000]

The only problem I have with StepMania is the interface. It tries to be too close to DDR to be a really pretty app, but it also tries to throw in too much eye candy to be an authentic-looking DDR clone. The result is that it comes off looking like it was made by DDR fanboys trying to make an app that looks "cool". If it tried harder to copy DDR's interface, *or* if it abandoned that goal and developed its own look and feel, Stepmania would be a far more attractive game.

Pfft, do not come in here complaining about if it's legal or not you all downloaded music at least once in your life. So do not act like little angels.

"Basically they are leaving it up to you to break the law"

That's the same with computers! You can Buy, or use free songs that people compose with this game!

This application though legal leaves the legality issue to it's users. No sound files are distributed with the product. Basically they are leaving it up to you to break the law. I spent 10 aggrevating minutes trying to get this thing to work when I finally realized that there was not a problem with the program but Empty meant that no songs were available.

Features 4 but I did not get to actually play anything.

The graphics are ok. The applications sound is quite good. 4

The playibility is NILL "O".

The stability is 5. Of course I do not know this to be fact because I did not get past the EMPTY sounds and had to turn it off. So for now I will rate as a 4

To be quite frank, you make it sound as if it is impossible to get music legally.
There is lots of legal, free music out there, you just need to look.
Plus there is the iTunes music store, many other music stores, and even songs off of CDs you have purchased.
I fail to see the validity of your argument.

I can assure you both that when you find a site to download the .dwi and .mp3 files, you will be more contented. Because of shear bandwidth and legality issues, Stepmania can't really host files, but there are a lot out there. Stepmania is an unrivaled, invaluable tool to any true DDR fan.

Sorry if i'm harsh but are you stupied you can't say something bad about it all because you don't know how to do it i got 40 songs and i made my own theme like 2 of them and so forth so if you like to say something bad about a game say it about it not saying it bauce you don't know how to use it.

It is inconvenient, but they don't include any songs/etc because of copyright issues. If they did they'd...

a) Have to have an arrangement with DDR about including some of their songs, or arrangements with 3rd party peeps for their songs & step maps (costs $$$ for them, thus money for you - if the makers of DDR would even be willing to consider it, that is).

or b) Include/provide links to places you can go like DDRAmerica to pick up these copyrighted songs. This would be illegal and likely wind up having them sued and the entire Stepmania development shut down.

Geez..it's simple ! lol everything is like the song folder... you have ALL folders for ALL elements in stepmania.... so if you want an annoucner you must put a folder with the announcer files in the annoucner folder..if you want random movies , you gotta put the random movie files in the random movie folder...and then go in the background/appearance options and then enable them...You should really go to the stepmania's website readme before posting such questions... READ IT'S WORTH THE EFFORT ! lol ;)

To Get Music You Should Do This:

1. Make A Group Folder For Your Songs
2. Go To The Step Mania Web Site., And Choose Songs And Links.
3. Choose A Link Under Dance Song Files, And Check Out This Site.

NOTE: For Starters, Try Random Sweetness.

4. Get The Zip Files, And Unzip. If Needed Rename The Unzipped Folder.
5. Place That Folder In Your Group Folder In Songs. You've Just Added Your First Song!

WARNING: SM Only Reads .sm Files!
