Stepmania is a rhythm game. Arrows pointing in different directions scroll up from the bottom of the screen and the player must hit the corresponding button in time to the music. The game can be played with your hands using the keyboard, but the real fun comes when using a sensor-laden "dance pad".
StepMania has Game Modes similar to Konami's Dance Dance Revolution and Andamiro's Pump It Up, Amuseworld's EZ2Dancer, and Konami's Para Para Paradise. Support for more games is planned in the future.
What’s new in version 5.0.12
Updated on Jun 23 2020
Version 5.0.12:
Gameplay:
Fixed bug that allowed pausing by pressing Select then Back. Pausing requires pressing the same button twice
Default theme ignores holding Select, or Start during gameplay. The pause menu must be used to back out of a song
Select Music:
Added AllowHoldForOptions preference. When this is set to 0 (off), going to the player options screen requires pressing Start a second time, instead of holding it
Other:
Fixed bug that deleted a warp on the same beat as a stop when saving
Ready and Go announcer sounds no longer play simultaneously
Fixed cmake settings so that player profiles can be loaded from USB drives once again
Fixed crash in loading profiles from USB drives
Themer visible changes:
Bug fixes are marked with [B]
Functions are marked with [F]
Metrics added are marked with [M]
ScreenSyncOverlay:
Actors are loaded from BGAnimations/ScreenSyncOverlay overlay instead of being hardcoded
Pausing gameplay:
Read Docs/Themerdocs/pause_menu.md for some explanation of handling pausing
The only problem I have with StepMania is the interface. It tries to be too close to DDR to be a really pretty app, but it also tries to throw in too much eye candy to be an authentic-looking DDR clone. The result is that it comes off looking like it was made by DDR fanboys trying to make an app that looks "cool". If it tried harder to copy DDR's interface, *or* if it abandoned that goal and developed its own look and feel, Stepmania would be a far more attractive game.
Pfft, do not come in here complaining about if it's legal or not you all downloaded music at least once in your life. So do not act like little angels.
"Basically they are leaving it up to you to break the law"
That's the same with computers! You can Buy, or use free songs that people compose with this game!
This application though legal leaves the legality issue to it's users. No sound files are distributed with the product. Basically they are leaving it up to you to break the law. I spent 10 aggrevating minutes trying to get this thing to work when I finally realized that there was not a problem with the program but Empty meant that no songs were available.
Features 4 but I did not get to actually play anything.
The graphics are ok. The applications sound is quite good. 4
The playibility is NILL "O".
The stability is 5. Of course I do not know this to be fact because I did not get past the EMPTY sounds and had to turn it off. So for now I will rate as a 4

Step mania is one of the best ddr sims out there, might crash or load slow at times but over all it's better than ddr in away.creat your own mix, check out UdderdudesDWI farm and they have about 200 songs to download.
StepMania 3.9 Alpha 13B has a lot of bugs fixed from Alpha 12. It's still great for a DDR emulator, but my biggest complaint is how the skins from previous versions won't work on the newer version. It's a pain in the butt, but nothing's perfect!
Stepmania 3.9 alpha 12 is the best! Instead of having to go to the arcade and pay for it, I can do it at my own house, for free, and for as long as I want!
