FTLCtimelines X

0.9.7.2.1.0.0
30 November 2011

Create timelines.

Overview

FTLCtimelines X creates timelines based on user input of events in time and/or spans of time. Events and spans may be categorized (1 level depth). Some additional features available.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, FTLC stands for "finite time lines and circles".

What's new in FTLCtimelines X

Version 0.9.7.2.1.0.0:
  • Maintenance update:
  • removes some deprecated code
  • removes Internet update (user activated) reference to MobileMe (site moved & updated)
  • compiled and tested on OS X 10.7 Lion though I didn't test OS X 10.7-specific features.
  • Same program, no doubt still not ready for prime time but seems to be working.

Slow, unresponsive, awful GUI - just not worth using at this point. Too bad, because it would be nice to have such a program ...

Well, this update was posted on my site about a year ago, but apparently someone found it and notified MacUpdate today, well that's OK I guess, I never did announce this version because it doesn't make much diff if ya don't use pictures for records. See previous comment by myself (developer) concerning Lion apparent incompatibility. As I therein said, a user emailed me that it wasn't working on Lion (last night), so i rebuilt the program with most recent version of RealStudio. But since I'm not on Lion (still with SnowLeopard) I really can't say if my quick fix allows it to work on Lion, any feedback on that would be appreciated though I can't promise to get it working on Lion as my programing days may be about done, not sure on that. The quick attempt to fix for Lion is version 0.9.7.2.0.0.

Just for the sake of completeness, the user who mentioned it didn't work on Lion was new to the program and it may be that it is working on Lion. To any user, you must know the program is not very intuitively mac like though the help files attempt to get one up an running with it. Program Not under active development, though I can muck around in it if necessary, I just can't manage any real extended development in it due to health problems.

Having finally installed Lion on an external firewire drive, didn't want to switch (upgrade), just test it, I can say all my applications appear to be running fine on Lion.

If anyone knows if this is working on Lion, at least as well as it ever did, wouldn't mind a note here. I haven't upgraded and am curious to know

I've been informed by one user that FTLC does not work on Lion. If anyone has any info from the OS (Lion messages) on crashing, you can send either them or a description of problems to me, but I can not promise an update fix (I've not updated to Lion).

I advise anyone interested in this program to NOT buy a license for it at this time. I should have a new beta version of FTLC uploaded sometime in the relatively near future and for the time being it will have no restrictions (i.e. no need for license). The new beta will be probably little better nor worse than the current version though what changes it may contained are not yet finalized.

Albeit not the best looking GUI, still a powerful conceptual step for me that can later on be referenced for other graphic programs. Price-wise I find it hard to beat $12.50 and ludicrous that someone would complain about the price. I have been using it since several versions back, and it does what it needs to do for me.

Whilst I agree it could do with some polishing I wouldn't be too put off by the negative reviews. Given the lack of competition this is the best historical timeline program I have found. It's very simple and could be much, much slicker but its basic premis is good.
