Re-enable iTunes 4.0.1 music sharing.

Overview

401(ok) is a quick and dirty hack to allow iTunes 4.0.1 to share music beyond your local network.

It redirects incoming connections on port 4689 to port 3689. This allows for the iTunes music sharing server normally run on port 3689 (but with limited access), to be reached on port 4689 globally. The local network limitation in the iTunes sharing server is achieved by sending server responses with a low IP time-to-live. By doing a local port redirection, the server responses are sent with the normal TTL, and the "subnet" limitation is eliminated.

With all due respect to the developer, who is clearly a clever person with programming skills way beyond mine, I'd would like to suggest that he not publicly distribute this application. I know that sounds like censorship or any one of a hundred other sins, but the reality is that this kind of application will really appeal mostly to shit-disturbers. All this sort of thing really achieves is bringing undue headaches on Apple and Mac community. You can argue free speech and fair play until you're blue in the face, but this is not the way to fight that battle. Again I repeat that I respect the programmer's skill and understand their desire, but on behalf of those of us who would rather have local network sharing "legitimately" than to bring down more trouble on our heads, I ask the programmer to reconsider publicly promoting this app. At the very least, I think it's unfair to "hijack" iTunes for this kind of purpose. (Imagine how you would feel if the roles were reversed.) So I would like to ask all users to think carefully about what are the larger consequences of downloading and using an application like this.

Great app. Works how it should, allows me to access my music library from computer labs at my school. And it's actually fairly simple, I just have to remember to write my IP address somewhere before I go out for the day.

Adam, you are an idiot. Triple rating a file because you don't like it is not the way to show your intellectual superiority. It works, and is free, thus it recieves the full 5 from me.

I didn't yet use it, but I already like it. Thanks for unspelling the first three comments. The music industry is afraid, yes, but not so much, and if, they will see their iTMS sales rising, and money is, what convinces them. I already had a driend remote controlling my itunes (a rather scary feeling, having your songs suddenly switch, your program close and open again, etc.) I ran a prog for him to be able to do so. Via Acq I can get all his mp3s effordlessly, so it might be better for the music industry to have itunes streaming, so that the people listen to streams instead of downloading the songs. Besides: A download is faster, than a stream and DSL-Users can simply download the whole playlist in minutes, not to talk of T3. Being able to listen to my songs at work, the university, or when travelling without having to copy the whole library, and being able to listen to friends' libraries online is the best way to keep me from copying all of them onto all my drives, and such helps to prevent piracy.

Wow! Reading the hot forum-like discussions below makes me think this program certainly provokes a reaction. My experience is that it works fine. No bells or whistles, just plain and simple.
