Looking for iPhoto 8 compatible iPhoto diet to pare down "runaway" duplicate JPEGS. I have thousands of photos and don't know what to do--all in a single library. Really isn't practical to do it manually. Pic thumbnails in iPhoto 8 have duplicated titles, e.g., P6260008.JPG but the thumbnail image is actually missing showing dotted outline only if using >4 thumbnails per row (5 or more across reveals the thumbnail image!) . File size shows the image exists. For the imediately adjacent thumbnail, the root title shows up, sans the '.JPG' suffix, along with a normal [visible] thumbnail. Double clicking this one brings up the full image, as it should. Double clicking the former, i.e., missing thumbnail (dotted line shows up) brings up only a blurry exclamation point in a circle. I don't get it. Afraid of doing damage to data. Suggestions?

Looks very helpful but will have to wait for the new version that is compatible with iPhoto7. The developer says that it is already in the works though so hopefully it will be soon.

USE WITH CARE!! I ran this and after sorting and then sending files to the trash, iphoto "unexpectedly quit", after checking the trashed files I noticed that some were not in the remaining library so deleting them would have lost them forever. The deleted files had file names that were NOT duplicates Also I can not now see any raw files that were in the library, all are labeled as jpegs. I have tried to re import the trashed files (after placing them in a desktop folder ) and I photo crashes intermittently. PB 1.33 10.4.8

I was able to locate duplicates from my iphoto library of some 10000 photos because of the ease of use in iphoto diet. Also able to reduce size from 60GB because I put some slides in with TIFF. At age 75 I found the instructions clear and simple. Thanks. How can I send some money in appreciation?

Please help. Last night I tried to work iphoto diet without reading the instructions. Stupid me, I did not read the instructions. Well for some reason I opened iphoto while the iphoto diet was doing "its thing". Well iphoto diet finished, with the results of nothing being deleted. But I reopened iphoto and no photos were there. Nothing. Nada. So after a brief heart attack, I found my beloved pictures in my hard drive. Please help, if anyone out there knows what i can do please please help me! Yes I know I am quiet an idiot for not reading the instructions.

Warning: Use with caution. Upon running this on my PowerMac G5, I lost total control of the system - no response, no cursor - even though all other apps remained running in the background. I would be very afraid to give it another shot at this point without seriously backing up my libraries in duplicate.

Updated - I almost lost my hard drive. Apparently, when I was forced to cold reboot after running iPhoto Diet, the directory structure became insanely corrupt and prevented me from booting the drive or accessing the files. Thankfully, a recent backup and DiskWarrior came to the rescue and I only lost the OS and a handful of preference files. I have over 5,000 photos in my iPhoto library and I have not been able to determine if iPhoto Diet was a catalyst for this almost disasterous event, but I HIGHLY recommend that you backup your system (and verify the backup) before running this on your system.

Unfortunatelly, this version (unlike the previous) can't handle some Central European characters. I was used to maintain my 8000+ photo library, but now whenever it finds a special CE character in the original photo file name, it says "APPLE SCRIPT ERROR: Can't make alias "No-good's:Users:Shared:iPhoto Library:2001:11:27:vyjednavac?i.jpg" into type Unicode text. (-1700)" and stops working. :-(

iPhoto Diet 3.0.8 addresses some Unicode character conversion issues. These actually appear to be bugs in Apple's Unicode implementation in Applescript, but I have added some workarounds that will hopefully take care of the issue for now.

Don't get me wrong -- iPhoto Diet 3.0.6 works, and you definitely can't beat the price. However, iPhoto 5 has really crippled how easy and snappy this application is for previous versions. Before, you could watch it go through your library and hear the files being thrown away sound-effect go faster than a 50 wpm typist. Now it's something where you can walk away from and come back later, and it's still churning away -- it doesn't work completely in the background anymore either as it brings up iPhoto 5 for every file it finds to throw away. Not good when you're typing something up in your word processor. Thanks for the author for make a nice freeware app that does its job. I just miss the "old days".

This is an excellent program. It takes a long time, but gets the job done. I lost 1.9 GB of dups, originals and empty folders. This loss definitely adds speed to my iPhoto, which shows that iPhoto Diet is just that, an iPhoto Diet. Great job. Be sure to check the images that you asked it to remove. Some are not duplicates, but iPD checks the date stamp and finds duplicates that aren't really duplicates, iPD just thinks they're duplicates. So be sure and check that before you empty your trash.

No longer get the "alias" hang, but Diet no longer works in the background; it comes to the foreground, overriding whatever you happen to be doing, whenever it finds an item to delete. But it does work.

Unfortunately, changes in the way iPhoto 5 manages photos have required the use of GUI scripting, which means background usage is not possible when removing originals. The Read Me file (see section "On iPhoto 5, Originals, and GUI Scripting") discusses in detail why I had to make use of GUI scripting. I have sent several bug reports and feature requests to Apple to provide more Applescript "hooks" in iPhoto so that I can do away with GUI scripting and make iPhoto Diet work in the background again. Note that iPhoto Diet will still work in the background if you are using iPhoto 4 or earlier (these libraries had a simpler structure than iPhoto 5 libraries).

This sorts through the majority of my iphoto 5 library perfectly but when it gets to three pictures of my girlfriend i get the error: «script» doesn't understand the fileSize message. (-1708) then nothing happens and i have to stop the program. Removing the pics from the library manually solves this problem but it's annoying as this is such a great app otherwise. Can this be solved by upgrading my girlfriend?

Are you using Jaguar (Mac OS X 10.2)? This may be a variable/subroutine naming conflict caused by the older version of Applescript in Jaguar. In any case, see if iPhoto Diet 3.0.2 fixes it (I'll release it later tonight).

This App is very useful. It is very stable (at least under Jaguar + iPhoto 2) and very easy to use. I recovered more than 300Mo after first run ! I contacted the developper for a bug I experienced and the day after a new version was released with bug fixed !! I strongly encourage iPhoto users to use this app and donate if they can. The guy is very kind and knows his job...

If you are encountering "alias" errors or if iPhoto Diet is stalling with a "Starting diet" message, please download iPhoto Diet 3.0.1 and follow the instructions in the Read Me file under the heading "What if I encounter problems?" I have not yet been able to reproduce these problems, but the information generated by the iPhoto Diet 3.0.1 console messages and logs will help me to track down the source of the problem. Martin

iPhoto Diet 2.2 or earlier remove movie files and RAW images from your iPhoto 5 library folder. In addition, while removing originals, iPhoto Diet 2.2 would confuse iPhoto 5's database. If you upgrade to iPhoto 5.0.1 (even if you had run iPhoto Diet 2.2 with iPhoto 5.0), the database issue is for the most part resolved, thanks to a bug fix from Apple. See the section "On iPhoto 5, Originals, and GUI Scripting" in the Read Me file for more information.

This is quite funny program because it removes some photos but the duplicates or triplicates are still happily glowing there and they are the exact copies, just from different backup disc. I have to go through all my CD-ROMs because they are starting to fade and there will be a lot of duplicates showing up. I guess need to wait for the next iPD version.

Doesn't really remove the majority of duplicates in my library. I can still see them and have to manually remove them. At first launch it removed a total of 256Mb, but I still have some two thousand photos that are duplicates. It reads the info not the actual picture.

This is a great utility; when you realise that everytime you tweak a pic in iPhoto it creates and stores a duplicate, its scary. And when you take a look at the iPhoto heirachical storage system, you realise nothing short of a miracle is going to get them out without creating havoc! That's what iPhoto Diet does; I've been using it since day one, and its fantastic. Decide which duplicates you want to keep, then throw out the rest. I've saved Gigs (lots of pics). Team this with iPhoto Buddy, and you have a 100% more usable iPhoto! And they're both free :) ...Isn't it odd that small utitities such as these can be more useful that very expensive 'pro-apps?' ;)

Fantastic, simple app. Reclaimed 150MB (and on my 10 GB HD, that's a lot) just by deleting unrotated originals and duplicates. Removing the thumbnail resource forks probably would have meant another 50MB. Another benefit is that iPhoto is no longer as sluggish as it used to be. Load time has been cut by at least half. Come to think of it, iPhoto Diet is beneficial in every way. I don't know why this isn't already a regular feature of iPhoto and not a standalone app.
