Info says works on OS 10.8 and up.. Paid the money via PayPal. Installed Sleepless v2.9.0. It didn't work on El Cap 10.11.2 (i.e., MBP still went to sleep with lid closed). E-Mailed developer. Never heard back. Oh well, live and learn!
Does anyone have another software solution that works on El Cap to suggest instead?
Thank you.
Is this application really work ?
I don't even have this application in my menu bar,
Plus, i want to delete it completely BUT the floating notice always ON !!!
$10? There are multiple free programs that accomplish this task.
Also, there is a new terminal command for sleep prevention, it's called "caffeinate" - search for it.
Sorry for anyone wasting the $.
I've been looking for something like this for a long time to stop my Macbooks from turning off when the screen was closed!
It looks like everything works as advertised on my 2011 MBA / 10.7.3. However, I think it could be so much better with a new mode that is a mix of
"Prevent sleep with lid closed, displays will sleep"
and
"Allow sleep timer"
It would act like the first, but also specify a timer so if you forget it too long, it will eventually go to sleep. The timer would start counting when the lid was closed and never be in effect when the lid was open.
This way, I can close the computer to carry it around, but if I don't open it after a specified amount of time, it will sleep. I think a lot of people would like this mode since it keeps the computer awake (including network connections) if you're just taking the laptop around your home or office. However, it will sleep after some time in order to save battery power and prevent overheating.
An option to set a keyboard shortcut to enable / disable would be great. (like InsomniaX has).
Also, I found a usability bug in the program. I use a side dock on the left side of the screen; when first launching the program it put some windows under the dock, and in order to move or close them, I had to autohide the dock. Moving the default position for these windows further from the edge of the screen would easily solve this problem.
I am trying to download upgrade for OS 10.6.7 trough "MacUpdate Desktop" it would not download ... I am trying to download from here it does not download either ... weird ...
Same problem from developer www ... weird, weird ...
same as insomniaX, this app doesn't work on new mbp models of 2011.
when I close the lid, all of my mbp's go to sleep.
completely useless.
it used to work on my older mbp's, also running OSX 10.6.7.
DO NOT USE v.2.2.1 ON MACBOOK!!
I just spent an hour on the phone with AppleCare support, only to find out that Sleepless 2.2.1 had badly corrupted the PRAM on my Intel Core Duo MacBook. Since Sleepless claims Intel compatibility, it may be an incompatibility with Apple's recent SMC firmware update.
Only one use of this software had completely crippled my system, preventing even the most basic of firmware functionality, including the boot process. This is a bad bug. DO NOT ATTEMPT!!
The last version of this worked wonderfully for me. But for some reason the system tries to automatically log out while sleepless is running which interrupts whatever program I want to leave running over night. This is on an iBook G4 1.33ghz with OSX 10.4.5, and leaving the lid open with the display backlight off.
I L-O-V-E this program!!!
Much thanks to the author for providing this resource to me. I share a 20" monitor between my Powerbook and my PC through a KVM, so whenever I would switch to the PC, the Powerbook would go to sleep .
But now thanks to SleepLess, I can keep all my active connections open on my Mac while I use my PC.
Thanks again to the developer!! 5 stars all the way around!!
I found elsewhere that your ibook/powerbook must be plugged in for sleepless to work for longer than 3-4 minutes before crashing the system. It would be good to add this to the documentation. Obviously this limits the appeal of this program to many who wanted to be able to plug into their laptops sitting in their briefcases. I will still find it useful, as I can plug into a car adapter.
Another problem, which I haven't found a solution for, is that Sleepless simply won't launch on my Powerbook. This seems unrelated to the version of OS X, as it does work on my iBook and both are running 10.3.9 The Powerbook is the original 15" TiBook, 400 mhz.
Please don't use this program if you are a laptop owner hoping to run your computer with the lid closed.
I've tried this program on 3 different editions of powerbook and all do exactly the same thing:
Run Sleepless
Close Lid
Computer stays awake. Great.
2 - 5 mins later computer shuts down. Dead. No chance to save.
I have a PowerBook G4. After I read "Read me"
"Attention!
Using your portable Mac with closed lid can lead to serious system heat problems!"
What do you mean? Can I use it without a trouble?
I can't get v1.5 to do anything on my G4 dual running 10.3.2. I tried logging out and restarting then running the app. I see nothing. I've been using v1.3 of Sleepless without problems and have gone back to that verison.
Doesn't work for me (1ghz 12" albook) or a friend (550mhz tibook), after being on with the lid closed for about 8-10 minutes, the computer powers itself off. in system.log: Mar 10 19:07:04 localhost kernel: ApplePMU::PMU FORCED SHUTDOWN, CAUSE = -96
i love it, the only program of its nature that i have found that runs on Panther. great for powerbook/ibook owners who want to keep their computers on with the screen closed. highly recommended to panther users.
It prevents my Ti Powerbook from sleeping when I close the lid. No other software I've seen is capable of this. However, you can't turn it off. You can toggle that On/Off button until you're blue in the face, but my Powerbook wouldn't sleep when I closed the lid until I logged out and bac in. I couldn't find anything in the process list to kill to make the program stop.
This works much better than going in to the Energy Saver preferences for those who don't always want their mac to never sleep. What I mean is, most of the time, I DO want my powerbook to sleep after a set amount of time. However, there are occasions where I do NOT want it to sleep. So instead of changing the preferences and then changing them back and half the time forgetting to even change them back, I can now use this little and free app. Works Great!
changing the sleep settings in your system preferences isn't so much about being lazy... at least not for me. it's about me forgetting to switch the preference back after i've disabled the sleep setting.
the light bulb sorta reminds me of what's going on... it's handy in that way.
SleepLess works fine for me, but if the button on the floating window is supposed to "update" as described - that is, if the text/image is supposed to change when the button is clicked - that's still not happening. The menubar icon does update when the sleep function is toggled, so I've simply disabled the floating window in the preferences.
I think some users are confused by terminology: instead of "SleepLess ON" vs. "SleepLess OFF," the menu should say something like "Toggle Sleep State," or "Allow Sleep" vs. "Never Sleep." The ON/OFF terminology makes it sound like the user is quitting the application itself. (The unchanging floating-window button probably isn't helping with the confusion either.)
All in all: worth keeping, because it does what it purports to do. But the interface still needs some tweaking, and the floating-window button still isn't quite right.
A great little ap! You can set it so that there's just a small light-bulb icon at the top of the screen: yellow means your Mac will sleep according to your system-preference settings; red means your Mac won't go to sleep. Great when you want to download a big file while *you* sleep. Yes, you can go into system prefs and set this up, but you have to click through a couple of menus to do it.
This program is very useful! If you are running something on you computer at night and don't want to permanently change the system settings, but also want your computer not to interrupt the process by going to sleep - then this app is a must have!
There is only one way to prevent sleep with closed lid - patch the kernel (I saw one patch of this kind).
Also you can plug-in external keyboard, and yor PB will not sleep (was told by Apple in some story).
i would find it intersting if there were a way to keep it from sleeping when you close the screen on the powerbook. I realize this is bad for the LCD however I move around a lot in the house and close the lid to do so. I hate it closing all of my active connections just to move to another room.
I hate floating windows !!! But you don't need to use this. I have it on always stay away (not sleep), and I have a hotkey for laucnhing it and for quitting it. When the app shows in the dock the machine won't sleep.
Great use with movies and so on. I don't use HD sleep, but it also features monitor stay awake :O) Great simple small app. Does it job, and does it good. Recommended
I haven't downloaded this program; it's needless to do so. You can prevent sleeping by setting your Mac to never sleep via a setting in the Energy Saver preference in System preferences.
How would you rate SleepLess app?
