Master disk image software deployment for sysadmins.

Overview

NetRestore... Whether you're deploying five, five thousand, or 32,000 systems, NetRestore is the software deployment solution for you. Built on Apple's Apple Software Restore technology, NetRestore can be used to quickly and accurately restore a master disk image to a computer's hard disk while that disk image is hosted locally, on a network via AFP, or on the Internet via HTTP. NetRestore can also be used in conjunction with NetBoot to fully automate the deployment of a lab full of machines. NetRestore was designed to be very easy to use yet flexible, powerful, and extensible.

NetRestore features the following:

  • Restores a disk image to a hard drive via block-level or file-level copying
  • Despite its name, NetRestore clones local hard drives and restores disk images located locally or across a network.
  • Pre and post-restore customization tools to set computer specific information such as the open firmware password, computer name, network settings, etc.
  • Full automation
  • Easy configuration
  • Customizable interface and tools
  • Includes a helper tool for easily creating master disk images and NetInstall-Restore image sets (for use with a NetBoot server)
  • Open source and FREE

Coupled with Carbon Copy Cloner, lab deployment has never been easier.

What's new in NetRestore

Version 3.4.6:

NetRestore

  • Updated the method for applying changes to the target volume's network configuration. Included a newer version of ncutil as well.
  • Resolved some issues handling errors during NTFS restores.

NetRestore Helper

  • The NetInstall-Restore disk image can now be mounted and restored to a local volume, allowing you to boot from a local volume and get similar behavior to a NetBooted client. This is a good option for deployments in which a "hidden" partition is leveraged for restoring the production partition.
  • NRH no longer requires 2X space on the target volume to store the master disk image. If 2X may be required, NRH warns you accordingly if 2X space is not available.

Our School district has used this program and fully "imaged" over 250 computers from OS 9 to OS X. It works very well. Apple does not have their own equivalent, but many apple people will tell you to use this program because there is nothing even close to it.

Brothersoft link is also broken, and make sure you use Softpedia's mirror because the other points to the broken link on Mike's site.

This program is essential weather you are a lab admin or not. Absolutely Fantastic! Developer is friendly, the code is open source, and you can change it to suit your needs. Very cool Program. Big thank you to the developer. Will send some money once I pay off my student loan. thank you so much!

Actually, it comes with the NetRestore Helper which will make your asr images very nicely which you can then deploy with NetRestore. I have used this app to install/support our 450 Macs in my school for several years- it is essential for my job (and my sanity!). We even have it set up so we can net boot any Mac and then immediately run NetRestore to image the machine from our list of prepared install images. Kudos to Mike B for this excellent piece of code!
