SleepWatcher overview

SleepWatcher is a command line tool (daemon) for macOS that monitors sleep, wakeup and idleness of a Mac. It can be used to execute a Unix command when the Mac or the display of the Mac goes to sleep mode or wakes up or after a given time without user interaction. It also can send the Mac to sleep mode or retrieve the time since last user activity. A StartupItem, sample start and sleep scripts and the source code for sleepwatcher are included in the download. A little bit knowledge of the Unix command line is required to benefit from this software.

What’s new in version 2.2.1

Updated on Apr 19 2019

Version 2.2.1:
  • SleepWatcher now is a 64-bit binary (and still contains 32-bit binaries for Intel and PowerPC)
  • With the -b -r option, the resumecommand is no longer executed repeatedly when it takes a longer time (in the order of the -b break duration) to run

This does exactly what I need and works well. Granted, it takes a bit of work to install and configure compared to GUI apps, but that shouldn't stop someone who needs such functionality to spend the time to work it out. However, if you'd rather use a GUI app, there's Scenario in the App Store. Many thanks to the developer for taking the time to create and share this useful utility.

I like SleepWatcher, but I really wish someone would take this concept into a user-friendly realm where you can simply install this, have basic options within a simple GUI for running apps, etc. after your computer wakes up with no need for using terminal. People would purchase a product like that.

This is way too geeky, people who can use this don't need it. Put a human interface on it however and you have a winner.

The ReadMe.rtf file included in the download tarball says: fixed a bug in argument parsing (when using only the -P or -U option, SleepWatcher 2.1 complained about „no useful options“); now the idle timer (for the -t -i option) is reset when the Mac wakes up, so the idle command is executed even when the wakeup took place without user interactivity (scheduled wakeup or Wake On LAN)

The README file in the distribution says, under Version History: added -b -r, -P and -U options; removed the installer packages and switched to launchd for starting SleepWatcher (SleepWatcher 2.1 runs with Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6) So, it's mostly a Leopard and Snow Leopard compatibility release. The developer's website still recommends 2.0.5 for Tiger and Panther

I don't know if I like the idea of my computer playing with itself while it should be sleeping. It's not decent. The other peripherals might talk......... No. Not for my boy. Signed Disgusted.

this program sounds awesome! I am a lab admin, this would be great could set machines to re-image, but only say if they have been left alone for a couple of hours, if the imaging is being done in the early morning. Plus all kinds of other neat stuff could be attached to the machine not being in use, IE, become part of a cluster, or start some maintenance. Please fix the links I am interested!!!!!!!!!!!!

This sounds perfect! My machine needs a certain amount of security, but not so much as to be obtrusive. I've wanted a way to set up my Mac so that the screen saver won't lock the machine and require a password. However, when it sleeps, I want it to require a password when it wakes. I hope I'll be able to set 'Require password after screensaver and wake from sleep' in System Preferences to 'off'. Then, use this app and a bit of AppleScript magic to lock the computer just as it goes to sleep. Can't wait to get home from work to try this out!
