Drive performance and benchmarker.

Overview

FWB DriveTest is a tool to compare hard drive performance to user needs. It contains a full suite of tests to help you gauge the performance of your drives and to verify the data transfers are error-free. FWB DriveTest application includes two testing features:
  1. Benchtest gives you the ability to compare to other drives as the test is being run. It ships with many sets of test data. BenchTest's test results can be exported either as a text file, which can be viewed and/or printed using a text editor such as SimpleText, or a JPEG file which you can easily post on-line or for print.
  2. Verify tests the overall integrity of the disk drive by transferring various block sizes to and from the drive. By reading, writing, and then comparing the read and write data, it tests the data integrity of the drive subsystem including the driver, the drive controller, the cabling, the drive's motherboard, and the operating system.

This program is pretty sweet. Using it to benchmark new ATA controllers.

This gives bogus data. If you want a real disk benchmark, get disktester from Lloyd Chambers. FWB has been going downhill for a long time and has just about hit bottom.

I'm afraid to say, this software gives false results in 10.3. I was using it to determine how fast SCSI arrays perform, and decided to try it on a number of external drives, including firewire ones. The results I got were way too high - 64MB/sec for a Powerbook in target disk mode in a sustained transfer - I don't think so! I selected a network mount connected via a 10/100 switch and it was claiming similar speeds, with no network activity! I don't want to think that the program is faking results in demo mode, but either that, or it's reading data from the disk cache, not the disk. That would explain the impossible speeds.
