Enhanced Carbon Emacs1.1

17 April 2007

Install a large number of pre-configured, LaTeX-oriented packages.

Overview

Enhanced Carbon Emacs is now a universal enhancement plugin for arbitrary (Unix, Carbon, or Aqua) Emacs distributions (such as Yaced, Aquamacs, CarbonEmacs Tiger, or the native Darwin Emacs in /usr/bin/Emacs). This includes a fully customisable LaTeX editing environment based on AucTeX, RefTeX, Preview and other packages.

Basically, ECE is a convenient way to properly install a large number of pre-configured useful packages for LaTeX users, which includes a hack of AUCTeX, that allows to have a more intuitive handling of the "view" command in a macintosh context (in particular, for non-PDFtex users willing to preview in PDF), and to use simpdftex and DVIPDFMx in a seamless way. From Emacs, you can launch directly any LaTeX process or any Mac application on files or regions you are working on.

Why carbon emacs does not call hook functions when loading a file of a certain major mode such as tex for example?

Too bad it only runs on eMacs! (per the short description)

This new version of carbonized emacs for panther looks every bit as good and even better than the previous version for jaguar. Kudos for the developers who helped us so fast by producing it.

Great distribution, the best Emacs for OS X, thanks Enrico! Too bad no update to Panther has been posted yet. In the meantime you may follow these steps: 1) Download Franconi's distribution (if you don't have it already). Install and rename it to /Applications/Emacs.fran.app/ (Note this does not run under Panther!). Go into /Applications/Emacs.fran.app/Contents/Resources/share/emacs/site-lisp and run tar cvf /tmp/fran.tar . from terminal. 2) Download and install Will Benton's distribution from http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~willb/mac-emacs/ (This one runs under Panther but has no fancy LaTeX support). The install will put Emacs.app under /Applications as usual. cd into /Applications/Emacs.app/Contents/Resources/site-lisp and retrieve Franconi's fancy LaTeX support: tar xvf /tmp/fran.tar 3) Fatto! you may now delete /Applications/Emacs.fran.app

An excellent distribution, especially if you work a lot with LaTeX. The only one I use. Enrico Franconi did a fantastic job and I am extremely grateful for work. Marc A. Le Pape Dept. of Information & Computer Sciences University of Hawaii Manoa
