MacUpdate Desktop
Oct 29 2009

ZWEI  You guys need to make this adware.

It's just not worth $20 a year (to me) when you consider a large percentage of the new Mac apps update automatically via Sparkle. Not to mention you can get a similar app for free over at http://appbodega.com/. I realize MacUpdate's library is a lot larger, but still.

$10/year seems reasonable to me.

DP8  The Bodega application is nice, but is nothing like MacUpdate Desktop - it does not show all of your applications (only the ones it "knows about", it does not show Widgets, Screen Savers, or Pref Panes. It also does not have anything like Watch Lists, and does not automatically install your updates for you with one click (it only downloads). It also does not come close to being able to identify and match what MacUpdate Desktop can. Simply put, the apps have different purposes and uses - they are primarily selling you new applications, while we are trying to help Mac users keep their apps up-to-date. Please give it try.

ZWEI  NOTICE: The OpenDNS team recently released an “Official” Mac OpenDNS client. Once the client is out of beta status I will be retiring my version of the updater as it is no longer needed. Further information about the new client can be found in the OpenDNS Forums.

ZWEI  The good:

-Sleek/intuitive interface

-Decent feature list

-Global hotkey to send tweet at any time without bringing up the full window is GREAT!

-Native Cocoa (efficient resource handling)

-More features on the way!

The Bad

-Menubar icon simply acts as a new tweet indicator. (should be a badge on the icon instead)

-Can't disable dock icon (only reason this app should need a menubar icon)

-Can't tell the difference between read/unread tweets unless you actually scroll through them with the arrow keys ...simply scrolling with the mouse marks them as read, but doesn't change their appearance.

-Spacebar should act like it does in twitteriffic ..not like Safari (having to use the arrow keys instead of the spacebar makes me take my hand off the mouse)

-Price ...I'd buy it if it was $5-$10. $15? No thanks. $20? ...I think people are forgetting what kind of app we are talking about here. I'll stick with the ads.

ZWEI  Actually, I HAVE been thinking about redesigning the menubar icon. I'll keep that in mind for the next release.

ZWEI  Are you using English as your language? ...if you are doing multiple files ...are you dragging them all on at once, or one at a time? Try dragging multiple files onto the app at the same time.

Do any of your files have any weird file names?

ZWEI  For those of you using Unsanity haxies, DNS-O-Matic Updater may quit at launch. Put DNS-O-Matic Updater in the global exclusion list in the APE preference pane and it should fix the problem.

ZWEI  If you could zip up one of the files that is unclickable and email it to me I'd like to see if I can figure out what is causing a problem. I can't imagine it being anything on my end, but it's interesting to me regardless.

ZWEI  I'm not sure what icon you copied/pasted to your folder, but I can assure you that this app doesn't cause any icon to be unclickable. It can't, actually, because it simply uses a function of OS X to create the icon compatible files. My guess is that you have created an icon with a large percentage of transparency and it's not responding to your clicks because you aren't clicking on a solid part of the icon.

ZWEI  Definitely not as polished as Parallels, but it's getting better and the price is unbeatable.

I've only had one problem with it and that was trying to watch a movie via Netflix's "Watch Now" feature. It works under the first beta, but if you install the tools with the second beta it stops working.
