ZAZZLE  previous version allowed to install for the current user only and did not require admin rights. current version no longer has option and you must install as admin.

CHRISTOPHER FORSYTHE  We're avoiding an upgrade issue which would cause thousands of support requests for us. However, the prefpane will work fine in either / or ~. You can even use pacifist to extract it.

VLC Media Player

ZAZZLE  just upgraded after seeing in the release notes that some memory leaks were fixed, but it's using 20MB more than the previous version. it's currently at 67.2MB. compare that to MPlayerOSX at around 20MB and quicktime player at 26MB.

TIMBO13  Are those results on a PPC or Intel Mac?

On my MBP, after launch it is using 11mb memory. After throwing a few different avi's (300mb+ xvids) and mov's (200mb 720p H.264) at it, it's sitting just under 25mb memory. During playback it seems to sit around 58mb memory useage (probably due to file buffering or something).

In any case, memory leaks usually only become an issue after extended/prolonged use.

Alarm Clock

ZAZZLE  unfortunately it cannot play sound if you don't have an active session. i have my screensaver activate the fast-user-switch login window for added security and when i log back in the morning, i see alarm clock is open, but it never made a peep, because it apparently cannot grab the speaker.

SEMAJA2.NET  If you want to lock the screen for security, you should try my Utility Lock which was intended for this purpose.

It is very customisable *dont mix it with the Apple Lock however* and quite secure.

PS. This is not to advertise my program, but more of to help a fellow user of this great alarm program

ZAZZLE  after 1.4.2 updated, it wouldn't restart. turns out the binary at iGTD.app/Contents/MacOS/iGTD has the wrong permissions. doing `chmod 755 iGTD` from the terminal fixes it.

FRANCKY76  "Complet waste" is a bit strong, isn't it ?. Not everyone use Terminal and also not everyone knows about the command line you suggested (thank you by the way !!).

Note too, that the application is less than 200ko…

Alarm Clock

ZAZZLE  i use it on my laptop and the only thing i don't like is that when the alarm goes off it wakes up the display. i'd rather wake it myself by moving the mouse or pressing a key, just in case i'm away from the computer. i like to minimize the unnecessary use of the backlight to extend its life.

BlackenedPixels
May 8 2007

ZAZZLE  i love this screensaver. the only thing i wish i could do now would be to active fast user switching to bring up the login window when the screensaver activates. i tried using sleepwatcher, and that does work when the power management shuts off the display, but not when blackenedpixels does, so it seems the screensaver is not actually shutting off the display.

BALTHAMOS  I really can't do anything slick with VLC; it does not give it's player state in any external format that I know of. I could implement a really rough version, that just plays on plug, stops on pull. It would not be able to detect what VLC is doing, just do what it's told to do. That being said, it would not be able to use some of the same advanced functions that have been implemented into the iTunes portion.

As for MPlayer, I have never used it before. There also seems to be two versions? I am confused on which one is the "right one" to be using. Even then, it may be just like VLC: not providing the needed information to function properly.

Delivery Status
Apr 23 2007

ZAZZLE  great widget, but two improvements would be really helpful.

first, it should be easy to figure out which service is used by just looking at the tracking number- google already does this.

second, when updating the widget, it would be nice if it could save its state (i.e. current open widgets) before relaunching. as it is now, i have several tracking widgets open now, and when i open a new one i get the 'updated' message and when i click on it to update and install, it closes all the already open delivery status widgets and relaunches with a empty widget, losing all the previously entered information.

ROBOTSPACER  Glad you like the widget!

Google only supports a very limited number of services compared to my widget. It doesn't recognize the DHL numbers that I've tried. I have a FedEx SmartPost number that it recognizes as a USPS number, and brings up none of the information that it does when it's tracked properly. And Amazon order numbers are all in the exact same format, so it's impossible to tell which store they're from. Those are just a few examples. The more services I add the more unreliable it would get. If I was sticking to the very few services Google supports then I agree it would be simple to add, but in this case I don't think it would work well at all.

As far as saving open widgets when you update, please see the help section on my site for a solution: http://mikepiontek.com/software/mac/delivery-status-help.html

Unfortunately I have no control over this; it is Apple's decision to make Dashboard behave this way. Granted I could create a custom installer to work around it, but that just presents other problems and will confuse a lot of users--I don't think it's my place to rework the Dashboard installation process.

Hopefully Apple will improve the process in an update to OS X. I highly recommend you suggest it to them: http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/
