Letter Opener | Sep 6 2009 |
JOHNDOE7 First, thanks for the update. Second, your upgrade policy s*cks majorly. I don't really care if this has been a complete rewrite or not (which may as well be a result of bad coding in the first place), the only thing I can see is that you're charging 12 EUR (incl. VAT) for a no-new-funcionality upgrade less than 3 months of goodwill for customers who have already paid 20+ EUR for 2.2 -- the whole Snow Leopard upgrade itself only cost 29 EUR! You should definitely reconsider your upgrade policy.

Letter Opener | Sep 17 2009 |
TOMECK I was a fan and supporter of Letter Opener (formerly known as OMIC) as well and I have to agree with John: the upgrade policy is questionable. I remember that I bought OMIC for € 5 (probably I was one of the first ever paid for OMIC) in August 2006 and paid an upgrade fee of € 9.99 End of April 2009 after our offices has upgraded to Leopard. To pay the same upgrade fee for the Snow Leopard version... I am not sure that I am willing to do so as more as there is no discount if you would like to upgrade several licences. Why does the discount for buying more licences does not apply to upgrades? I am not saying that an upgrade fee is illegitimate but the fee should be reasonable with a fair "grace period" even more if people support an developer across diffrent versions. (Version 3.0.1)

YOXI Okay, this .docx problem has turned out to be a bug in the odf-converter code used to export NeoOffice files to MS Office 07/08 format. The NeoOffice developers have filed a bug with the odf-converter project (who developed that code), and they now await a response. For the moment, you can at least open the .docx files in Word 07/08 if you have access to that app - just click on Okay in the 2 error dialogues that come up and the doc will then open. YOXI Yes, this is the first fully aqua release of OpenOffice (as opposed to NeoOffice) that doesn't require X11 but runs natively in OSX. NeoOffice is currently based on OOo v2.2.1, but they will be releasing an early access version of v3 for people to test in mid-November (see their website for details of the Early Access scheme) and the proper Neo v3 release should be some time in January. See http://neowiki.neooffice.org/index.php/NeoOffice_Feature_Comparison for a feature comparison of Neo/OOo/MS Office 2008 - NeoOffice already has some functionality not available in OOo v3 in OSX, and is quite a bit faster in certain areas, such as slideshow presentation. SJK PH 2.8 is a Leopard-only package, but can be extracted/installed using Pacifist as I mentioned in an earlier previous post. One problem is machete scripts aren't working, which I discovered when )#$@# "hidden" accesskeys on certain forums started interfering with standard Cocoa text keybindings again. SJK Aside from the machete script lossage and maybe a few other minor anomalies PH 2.8-79 is working fine with 10.4.11 on both my iMac G5 and wife's eMac. Only one Safari crash for me so far, which was triggered by moving thumbnails in SafariStand's sidebar. (Version 2.8)

PithHelmet | Nov 22 2007 |
GENERAL HONEYPOT sjk, is PH 2.8-79 the same as the one that's available to download here? Only when I check the version number it's just 2.8. Also, are you changing the numbers in info.plist, or just leaving it? The maxbundleversion number in 2.8 is 5524, not 522, so I'm at a loss as to what to do. (Version 2.8)

PithHelmet | Nov 23 2007 |
SJK The PH version downloadable from here should be the same 2.8-79 version I downloaded directly from the developer's site, but I haven't actually checked. I removed the leading '5' from MaxBundleVersion and MinBundleVersion value in both Info.plist files. See bedouin's more recent comment on the main page about an unofficial version you can download that contains the Info.plist-modified PithHelmet.bundle and a README.txt explaining how to install it. And you might want to install SIMBL-0.8.2 first; it's available as a separate download here. That's what I did. (Version 2.8)

YOXI (from the NeoWiki): "So...is NeoOffice written in Java? No. NeoOffice is a Mac OS X native version of OpenOffice.org that uses small amounts of Java code for graphics drawing and configuration. OpenOffice.org is written primarily in platform-agnostic C++. However, NeoOffice takes advantage of Mac OS X's advanced Java integration to tap into the Mac OS X look-and-feel. In other words, the little bits of Java in NeoOffice primarily have to do with operations that affect how the application appears to the user. The "guts" of the office suite are written in C++. (The code that makes up NeoOffice is 99% OpenOffice.org code shared among all OpenOffice.org platforms and 1% Mac OS X-specific code in Java, C++, C, and Objective-C. Ohloh.net shows that the NeoOffice-specific code is 93% C/C++.)" (Version 2.2.1)

SEIKA7 In your Quark folder, go into the folder "For System" and run the QuarkXPress Components installer. YOXI This is a very handy app if you want people to have access to an app in different languages without fiddling with the system prefs each time - one improvement I would suggest to this plugin is to have it actually check whether the language resources are actually present in the .lproj folder - some apps have empty .lproj folders, so the plugin shows such a language in its 'available' list but then throws up an error message when you choose it. It also took a couple of restarts of Finder after installing this before my Finder behaved properly again, but who knoweth what caused that. (Version 1.0)

YOXI Since one can choose (in Finder prefs) not to show any mounted volumes on the desktop, I can see this is useful if you want less 'desktop clutter'. I would happily use this app in preference to having desktop icons: • if I could choose Get Info from the menu as well as unmounting a volume • if the menu showed unmounted volumes that haven't been ejected - once I unmount a volume using this app, there's no way to remount (or eject) it directly, I have to use either Terminal or Disk Utilities to remount (or eject) the volumes. This is relevant because if I unmount one volume on a partitioned firewire drive, for instance, I might want to remount it - and if I unmount all the volumes, the drive itself is still not ejected so the disk is not spun down, but there's no way to get back at it from here. I hope this is useful feedback... :) (Version 1.0)

OpenOffice.org | Sep 3 2006 |
YOXI Just to clarify, NeoOffice is not 'based on java' but uses some java calls on top of (almost entirely) C code and cocoa to draw windows etc. without needing X11 to run. This X11 version is therefore a little more speedy than NeoOffice, especially on older macs, but NeoOffice is better integrated with OSX. Speed/usability you can decide on for yourself, as you can install them side by side and try both - personally I find it useful to have both for that reason (e.g. on my old powerbook, running macros or a search/replace on a large doc is a lot faster in X11 but I prefer NeoOffice for pretty much everything else). MICHAEL TSAI The advice on that Web page isn't quite right for SpamSieve, since its Info.plist file already has the LSUIElement key. For SpamSieve, you just need to change the 0 to a 1, as shown here: http://c-command.com/spamsieve/manual-ah/how-can-i-hide-spamsiev (Version 2.4.4)

YOXI Woops, thanks for pointing that out, I'll amend my page accordingly. (Version 2.4.4)

YOXI ...sorry, that should be 'before the last /dict line' not before the last line, which is the /plist line. (Version 1.3.3)

Dockless | Jul 13 2006 |
YOXI You add these 2 lines before the last one in the info.plist file: replacing the [ & ] with angle brackets (the macupdate comments system eats angle brackets so I can't type them here...) (Version 1.3.3)

Tinderbox | Jun 29 2006 |
EASTGATE Yes, it's just $192. And at the moment it's on sale- so you can save $25. It's a professional tool. Lots of people don't need it. But if you do need Tinderbox, it's going to save you thousands of dollars. (Version 3.5.0)

YOXI And I can't help but add that from a buddhist perspective, at least, 'integer' and 'infinite' are just mutually augmentative concepts - we have this idea of 'separate things' and of a 'finite or infinite number of them', but they're just conventions for describing an experience - language is just a modelling tool, and a model is just a better or worse attempt to describe experience. Anyway, you could say that adding enhancements expands the *realised* number of limitless possibilities for this app if you want to stay picky ;) (Version 0.74)

Portable OpenOffice.org | Apr 29 2006 |
YOXI The advantage of this implementation of OOo is that you don't have to keep it in your startup volume's /Applications folder to use it. If you want an OOo implementation that doesn't need X11 and runs more natively in OSX, try NeoOffice - currently available based on OOo v1.1.5, but the v2.0.2 is in alpha testing right now and is already very stable. Uses native OSX fonts and print dialogue, and work on a more OSX-native GUI is in progress. An intel version is expected sometime in the summer. Meanwile, OOo v2 will run on any panther/tiger mac that has X11 installed. (Version 2.0.2 r1.0)

Namely | Apr 22 2006 |
YOXI Dammit, I forgot that this system edits out stuff in angle brackets - so what you need to add to the info.plist file looks like this: but replace the curly brackets with angle brackets like the rest of the entries in the file you're editing. TextEdit is fine for editing the plist file, by the way. (Version 2.1)

Namely | Apr 22 2006 |
YOXI You can make this a non-Dock app by goinginto Package Contents and editing the info.plist file by adding the lines: which will make Namely a background app - this means you can't quit it the normal way, but it's invisible until you invoke it from the keyboard. Neat. (Version 2.1)

Apple Java for OS X 10.4 | Apr 19 2006 |
YOXI It's not possible to change the java version NeoOffice uses - NeoOffice/J (v1.1) will only use v1.3.1, NeoOffice (v1.2) will only use v1.4.2 (and is thus only compatible with OSX 10.3 upwards). If you change the default java in your OS to 1.5, NeoOffice will not work, but as the other poster said, it's a more under the bonnet job to change the system's default java version. Create Booklet PDF Service | Mar 19 2006 |
YOXI In my review below I said that there was a problem with the margins and clipping - but I've confirmed that this is NOT a problem with Christoph's app. It's simply that if the initial document's left/right margins are very narrow, once they get rotated into a landscape booklet, the edges of the pagelets may be out of the top/bottom printable area for your printer, as they are (just) for my HP Officejet 1100. You can easily get around this by reducing the %-age size in the Page Setup before printing. (Version 1.0)

Create Booklet PDF Service | Mar 19 2006 |
YOXI If you're looking for the pdf file, it's written in the /tmp folder, so if you want to keep it for later you'll have to move it or Save As in Preview. Also, on my British English setup, the PDF Services item appears in the /Library/PDF Services folder as PDF Create Booklet, but appears in the actual menu in Dutch, for some reason. And finally, something's up with the page margins - the right edge of each righthand page is clipped. I don't know if this is because the service isn't respecting the A4 paper size, or what. A good and useful service, though, once these things get ironed out. (Version 1.0)

Meditation Timer | Mar 4 2006 |
YOXI Lovely - nice bells! The enhancements I'd appreciate are: • a bell at the start, with option to set the delay after clicking the Start button - it's a good way to get intto the mood. • bells at timed intervals for meditation in stages - e.g. 5 stages, 5 minutes each, with a bell at start and end as well, with option to set the number of stages and their length. Of course, it's fine as it currently is, I'm just lacking contentment... (Version 1.0.1)

TREVORM-L Great little app and a excellent choice of sounds... I agree with Yoxi in that it would be great to have a start delay to get your self seated and ready and a choice of sounds at the end point... the option for intervals with separate sound choices would be a nice bonus... ... and you thought it would stay at v1 :-) (also thanx for the link to freesound project)...

YOXI Or, on the other hand, you could have been running it since v1.x from Panther to 10.4.5 and had no problems whatsoever while running it in an work-intensive environment, as I have. YMMV. (Version 2.3)

YOXI I like this very much, but one thing would really improve it for me - the ability to rearrange the list once made, by moving locations up/down relative to each other. At the moment, new locations get added at the bottom, and it's the bottom one that gets deleted, so you have to work out in advance what order you want your list to be in before creating it. Apple Bluetooth Firmware Update | Jan 3 2006 |
YOXI Tried it with my 15" titanium powerbook and D-Link USB adapter, but it says it's not needed. So, as someone else suggested, perhaps it depends on the version of adapter one has installed. (Version 1.2)

Ukelele | Dec 22 2005 |
YOXI I found this app very straightforward to use - within 15 minutes of downloading, I'd created an alternative layout to the one I normally use that has a couple of extra dead-keys for macron and caron, very useful for writing romanised pinyin. I found Ukelele very logical to use for this, anyway, and the help very clear. Thanks to the developer. (Version 1.6.4)

YOXI I like this a lot - easier to use than ToDo X which I was using a while back. A few bugs (I couldn't find anywhere on Justin's site a way to email him about bugs, so I'm having to post them here): • currently I can't change the font colours of the task/folder font in prefs, even though it gives me the options to do so • the 'do you really want to delete this?' dialog needs to pop up on top of the menu, because otherwise sometimes it ends up behind it and I can't click on the buttons! • once there are folders with items in them enough to fill up the pane, there's no way to add a folder at top level without closing all the other folders first (to create a space to click in), as far as I can tell (Version 3.5)

JUSTIN WILLIAMS With respect the colors, I never really thought it was worth implemenenting (simplicity), but now that I think about it, it is somewhat confusing for it not to work. I added it to the to-do list. Also, my contact info is in the About box. (Version 3.5)

TechTool Pro | Dec 13 2005 |
YOXI Works fine for me - and much improved speed creating eDrive on slower machines, now that it just tells you which folder it's creating as it goes along, rather than every single filename and size - good one. (Version 4.1.1)
