XTRALEAN  Please note: 1.01 is a beta build - adding QuickLook as a feature to DataLore. Final release of DataLore with QuickLook should be available shortly. Somehow, this build got posted here at MacUpdate - I didn't put it up :)

Anyways, have fun, QuickLook was the number 1 feature request since the 1.0 release and we should have it perfected in a day or two. And as usual, if there's a bug, it's because it's beta - please report bugs to support.xtralean.com

XTRALEAN  iShowU is a great little app. I used it for our screencast tutorials for one of our products a few years back. I did a quick tutorial for a new product the other day on a MacBook with OS X 10.6 and iShowU was just fabulous again. Will be doing a series of tutorials again.

Currently using iShowU version 1.75

XTRALEAN  I would like to thank everyone for trying the Beta of DataLore. We should have a final release (version 1.0) out soon. Just putting the final touches on the product and a couple of minor bug fixes.

I've posted a 3 minute demo of DataLore, for those wanting to take a look at what DataLore can do. You can view it here -

Thanks!

XTRALEAN  Hi Evil Skull,

We decided to use the package installer to make installing the product more convenient and easier. The pkg installer will automatically quit DataLore and the menu bar app (for example if you are updating the product) and copy the DataLore application to the Applications folder. Quick and easy and there is no need to eject the dmg.

For the final release we'll provide an alternate download for people that like to do this type of stuff manually by hand.

Regards,

Hagen Kaye

XTRALEAN  Whatever.

We are protecting the investment that our customers have made when they purchased the Xtras.

ImageWell is free with lots of features. We added Xtras such as batch processing, more shapes etc for a very small cost. $20 was low cost when I got into computers 25 years ago.

We've made regular updates to the product this year to both the free version and the Xtras.

ImageWell 4 is going to be super-fantastic. It's been in development for the last 12 months and we've invested a lot of time and research developing the next version. ImageWell 4 will be a free update for ImageWell 3 Xtra users.

If we didn't protect our product from casual piracy then we wouldn't be protecting our paying customers because either we would go out of business or we couldn't offer all these updates and the upgrade to the next version for free.

Any developer that allows their product to be easily stolen nowadays is not your friend. Paying customers just end up paying for lame updates or end up with a product that never gets updated.

Since version 1 came out of ImageWell it's been free and we can continue to offer a free version for basic image editing needs today - with top notch tech support at support@xtralean.com, screen cast tutorials, an open discussion board at support.xtralean.com and it's been localized in 15 different languages.

We are just a two person company that really enjoy what we are doing - you're just a twerp.

XTRALEAN  Actually, I should add an amendment to this post.

ImageWell 3.3 now checks the serial numbers with our server for valid numbers. By checking the serial numbers with our server the phony serial numbers that have been floating around the net no longer work - only serial numbers that have been purchased work.

And we added the feature for checking for automated updates.

To respond to your statement -

"I really like this App and I'm seriously considering paying for the extras. I regret that I won't be able to buy your program, though, if you continue to confuse people with talk of "stealing."

On Apple's Leopard Install disk package it says -

"Don't steal software"

So I guess by your reasoning, you won't be buying Leopard.

LOL.

FLOODLE  Thanks for the info. I don't buy software that phones home. This is for the same reason that I don't shop at places that check my receipt at the door: I don't appreciate being treated like a criminal after I've already made my purchase.

"So I guess by your reasoning, you won't be buying Leopard."

That's cute, but Apple doesn't have anything to do with *your* misuse of the word "steal."

Please let me know when you decide to drop the "phone home" junk from your App and the misleading language from your posts so I can reconsider my decision not to purchase your software.

FLOODLE  Twerp? Is this how you treat all your potential customers? Do you think that childish name-calling will somehow convince me to see things your way? That playing the "poor me" card will make up for treating your customers like criminals?

Either you provide a product that meets my standards or you don't. And right now, you don't. Keep reciting those BS lines about protecting your customers and adding value. Hell, some of your customers might even believe that crap.

Yesterday, I had my credit card all ready to spend money on your program. Then, I found out that you treat all your customers like potential criminals.

You can behave like a child and call me names all you want. You're not getting a dime from me until you decide you want to provide a product that meets my standards.

XTRALEAN  ImageWell doesn't phone home, never did and never will. It doesn't even automatically check for updates.

If you are wondering how ImageWell detects pirated serial numbers, these numbers are already inside the ImageWell product - so there is no need to 'phone home' bypass firewalls etc. So if a pirate set up a firewall, turned off their internet connection, used Snitch or whatever, ImageWell would still detect the pirated serial number.

As an interesting side note to piracy. I was completely surprised by the sheer number of them, for every sale of the Xtras, there were 3 pirates that tried to steal the Xtras with a pirated number. That's just an incredible amount when you think about it.

Imagine what a retail store would do if for every item sold there were 3 theives that were ready to steal that item?

The Internet is a wonderful place, you can find free products like ImageWell. Anyone can also find pirated serial numbers to easily steal software, and developers can find these numbers too - it doesn't take much cleverness. Heck if we developers can develop a product we certainly can find pirated serial numbers for our own product.

So phoning home? bypassing firewalls? LOL, I just put the pirated serial number inside the product, I don't have to be that clever to detect it.

I'm sure it won't take long before there is a new batch of pirated serial numbers, so for the next update of ImageWell, I'll have to add those numbers as well. Unless, I don't mind having 3 ImageWell Xtras stolen for every one copy sold.

As a final note, I'm happy to say that there are hundreds of thousands of happy users of ImageWell that are using ImageWell in free mode. ImageWell is localized in 14 different languages, and we'll being adding Russian as the 15th language donated by a generous ImageWell user. I certainly wouldn't build an application that destroys the trust of these users.

That's all, sorry for the long response,

Hagen Kaye

XTRALEAN  ImageWell is free. It's fully functional and has lots of features. There are Xtras you can upgrade to, for a small price, which requires a serial number.

ImageWell will check for known pirated serial numbers. If someone types in a pirated serial number to unlock the Xtras, ImageWell will be disabled (both the free version and the Xtras) and that person's right to use any of our product will be terminated.

A note to would be pirates: Enjoy the free version of ImageWell, there is plenty of neat features to use and don't be greedy and pirate the Xtras.

XTRALEAN  A special thanks for all the feedback and bug reports so far to help us make ImageWell 3.0 the best we can.

The number 1 complaint so far is the cropping features are too complicated in ImageWell 3.0 compared to ImageWell 2.1. We are working on redoing the UI to make it more intuiative and easier.

Please continue to submit feedback and bug reports via the built in bug reporter.

I agree. I think easier-cropping is most wonrderful function of Imagewell 2.

So please keep it simple, don't make it like cheap-photoshop as well as many free imaging-soft in here...

Parallels Desktop
Apr 28 2006
*****

XTRALEAN  Quite nice!

I'm giving 5 stars because it's beta and a few quirks are expected.

Installed Window 98 SE: Installation went well, it's quite responsive on a 20" Intel iMac. It took a bit of 'work' mostly because the CD wasn't bootable and had to figure out a way to make a bootable floppy. Sound doesn't seem to work, but I'm assuming Win98 requires a sound driver that doesn't come with the basic install.

Installed Red Hat Fedora: 15 minutes, up and running complete with sound.

Will install Win 2K and probably get the sound function working with the right sound driver.

Parallels is exactly what Virtual PC was - only faster because it's not emulating the Intel chip. I was expecting to install some 'Admin' priveledge stuff, but it installs quite easily without any fancy code requiring the Admin password - it's like magic!

Tech support is forum based with lots of good information from other users. Having trouble? Visit the forum at http://parallels.com and your question is most likely been asked and answered.

Into gaming? You'll probably want to do the Apple boot camp route, but for everything else this product will run Windows (and Linux) nicely in a window.

Cons: It's a little rough around the edges, but that's to be expected from a beta. Developers seem to be very responsive to suggestions and improvements to the product.

My wish: I hope they don't 'sell out' to a big company like Virtual PC did otherwise we'll probably never see what this product will become - which I think it will be the 'one' for PC emulation on a Mac.

Congrats to the Parallels Team for a fine product!

ANONYMOUS  I really liked its versatility when I first used it, but found that the image quality is simply not good enough for my purposes.

Compared to web albums produced in iView Media Pro the picture quality of the iView albums at the same resolution and smaller file size is dramatically better.

iView is quite limited in options, so If this can be fixed I would go back to using Shutterbug in a heartbeat.
