ROBINHOOD "it only supports RS232" - this is incorrect. It supports every GPS which GPSd supports, including many USB and Bluetooth GPS units. I myself use it with a Holux GM-210 USB GPS, and it works perfectly. I know of other people using it with Bluetooth units with similar success. In fact, GPS hardware support is not part of GPSRouteX at all - that is contained entirely in GPSd (gpsdX). "I have figured out that you need some kind of a driver (gpsdX)". True. As stated on the home page and in the ReadMe file on the disk image, GPSRouteX requires GPSd to run. gpsdX (which is a Mac-native Universal Binary build of GPSd) is a completely separate system upon which GPSRouteX depends. Although I understand your initial confusion, the installation of gpsdX is fairly clearly linked on the install disk image (both as a web link to the gpsdX home page, and in the ReadMe file... I've tried to keep the ReadMe short and to the point, so that - hopefully - people will actually read it). Many people would prefer that a new piece of software didn't go installing things behind their backs, and I have to say I am with them. Since this application requires more than can be achieved with just "drag-and-drop" installation (which is really the only 100% Mac-like way of doing things), I've elected to keep gpsdX clearly separate, so that the user can install it when they need it (if they don't already have it), and see very clearly what happens when they do so. Value: for an application with no USB support and manual setup, a price of 29$ is definitely too much. gpsdX is completely free, includes an installer and GUI config utility, and enables GPSRouteX to support most current USB and Bluetooth GPS receivers, then allowing you to use many freely available sources of data extremely easily. Since no other Mac application currently does automatic route sequencing, and most others start at $50 or more, I hope $29 isn't too much to ask for a program with more powerful features and (in combination with gpsdX) similarly comprehensive GPS hardware support. Then again, if real-time route navigation isn't actually what you want to do, then $29 is definitely too much to pay, because that's what this program does. :) If you're looking for utilities to transfer data to and from handheld GPS units, then it's definitely better to look in other places. Thanks for your review... and let me know if you think of any other features you'd like to see in this program in future! (Version 1.0.1) |
