The vast majority of the memory EarthDesk uses is an 80MB file on disk that is mapped into memory as needed. So EarthDesk may say it is using 100MB, but only 20 of it is "static", the rest will be released if some other app needs the space.

The uninstall procedure on our site is to totally remove everything... and some of these files are OS X caching things so it is bit of overkill. A fully automated way to do this is in the works.

If you ordered on or after 1 December 2006, it is free.

80MB of this is a cache on disk that will be purged if other apps need the space... the rest depends on the number as resolution of your displays.

EarthDesk 4.0 can be used as a screen saver. You need to point your screen saver to use the proper folder. Instructions are on our site at:

Comparing our small 2-3 person company to MS doesn't work very well.

The images EarthDesk uses are not public domain. For the satellite image, we licensed content from The Living Earth (3 different maps), while the cloud data is provided by the UK government. The political map was created in-house.

Falling dollar is not your fault... at least I don't think so, depends who you are. ;-)

Deciding on a price point is not an easy task as it has to balance value to the end user with the financial realities of developing the product in question... it has to cover the rent!

EarthDesk has been on the market for almost five years at the same price point despite a constantly falling US Dollar (many of our expenses are in Euros).

At the end of the day the cost is less than dinner out.

Thank you for your interest in our product.
