JOSEPH WATT If my instructions for setting the Firwall in OS X do not solve the Limewire launch problem - then what you have is a incomplete JAVA installation. This is NOT a Limewire problem! It is an Apple problem which can be easily fixed. Here is the fix for that (you will need the Panther Installer disc for this!): Repairing an Incomplete Java Installation 1. From the Finder, navigate to /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Resources/ Move the version.plist file to the Trash. 2. An authentication dialog may appear. Enter an administrator username and password. 3. Insert the Mac OS X v10.3 Install Disc 1 CD while current Panther install is running (do not start from the installer disc - just place it in CD-ROM drive only) 4. If a new Finder window opens presenting the installer, close it. 5. From the pull down menu, choose the option: Open a new Finder window 6. Navigate to Mac OS X Install Disc 1 and then this path: /System/Installation/Packages/ and double-click the file called Java.pkg. 7. Follow the instructions on the installer. Following these steps should force an installation of the proper Java version onto the system, restoring proper behavior. It will work everytime. Fell free to write me if you have problems with this procedure.

ISRAEL Hi I was just having trouble with my limewire. I have version 4.8.1 and it will not run. I just recently upgraded my osx to the lastest version 10.3.9 I don't know if this has anything to with it but I know that my limewire is not working. I need it desperately. Any advice? (Version 4.8.1)

LimeWire | Apr 17 2005 |
JOSEPH WATT Those of you who did not bother to go to Limewire's site to read about the work around for 10.3.9 and the new Apple Security update posted last week, here it is. (See below). You must do this, in order for Limewire to work under Apple's new security update: To open the OS X firewall for Gnutella access, please do the following: 1. open up 'System Preferences' 2. Open 'Sharing' folder. 3. Select the 'Firewall' tab 4. Select 'New...' button on right hand side 5. From the 'Port Name' drop down box, select 'Gnutella/LimeWire' 7. Restart your LimeWire application. (Version 4.8.1)

JOSEPH WATT WOW!... am I spoiled! New to the "peer 2 peer" stuff, my first software program of this type was Limewire Pro. I had been using it exclusively for over a year, when last week I got greedy trying to locate something I could not find, and downloaded the other 4 programs, just to see if I could find it through them. UGH! Why are people still using these other programs? They are awful, not to mention they never have anything. Not ever having used these other programs, I never fully appreciated what Limewire has to offer. Such as the ability to isolate file "types" from one another. This is especially helpful when looking just for MAC only programs, or for PC only programs, etc... Also, being able to have the file "type" list alphabetically is a HUGE advantage. Yes, I know some of the others will let you sort by certain categories, but none of them allow this field to be alphabetized - saving lots of time and eye strain as well. The things I do find on Limewire Pro download VERY fast and having the ability to isolate my searches by modem "speed" (T1 or faster) is another big bonus. I also appreciate that Limewire checks and verifies each connection and then rates it, in case people who wish they had a faster connection list they do. Their verification process lets me know what speed it really is, so I can decide if I want to bother or not. Like I said, I am using Limewire Pro. Maybe this version is slightly different from the free one, I don't know. What I can say is anyone using the FREE one that is not getting all of the above - upgrade immediately. I have NEVER so much as even had a "freeze" or had to reboot the software ever and I use it on both MAC and PC platforms. Limewire is stable and offers thousands of options, rather than 5 or 6 to choose from. Maybe this is because everyone is now using Limewire, so there's not as many users using the other programs?? Could be. I don't know. What I do know is Limewire is the "Rolls Royce" of these types of programs. (Version 4.3.3)

Interarchy | Jan 19 2005 |
JOSEPH WATT For the past few years, our company have used only two FTP programs - Interarchy and Transmit. When working with inexperienced individuals (like my Mom who is 80 years old) we liked the simplicity of Transmit, where there are just two windows options to deal with. On the left side "Your Stuff" (your computer's hard drive) and on the right side "Their stuff" (the web site you are online with). Although this was a great way to upload our business web site changes, Transmit would not allow us to do multiple uploads, at the same time, to different parts of our web site. So as of Interarchy 6 we stopped using Transmit altogether. The reason we use Interarchy exclusively now is because it will allow us to start uploading one area, then jump to another, then another, etc... We have a T3 modem, with exponential uploading. If the system where our account is housed is not busy, it will keep uploading exponentially until all our uploads are complete. Thus far, the upgrades for Interarchy have continued to be very good, until this latest one, version 7.3.1. They have outdone themselves this time! They have added a feature that makes doing FTP transfers, both simplified (even for my 80 year old mother) by adding the ability to change your view window to match that of the "column view" in OS X - brilliant! To be able to see your web site's hierarchy through a series of panels, rather than hundreds of open windows stacked on top of each other, really helps my employees understand where everything is and how to locate things quickly. Our site is over 6 Gig in size. There's a lot of stuff on there and one could get lost very quickly. After I downloaded 7.3.1 and opened it up, I was surprised that it was FREE - part of my original upgrade to version 7. Upon seeing these new features, I was willing to pay for this upgrade, so finding out it was FREE was icing on the cake. Some major work has gone into this program since it's old OS 9 version, yet their upgrades remain free in the current version. Keep in mind, when I get updates to software like Adobe and Microsoft, they are nearly ALWAYS fixes to problems that should have been caught in the "beta" testing stage, before releasing to the public. The updates to Interarchy are actual improvements to what I thought was already an outstanding FTP software. Oh sure, they do add some fixes along the way for very obscure things, like multiple languages problems, etc... but they always add some brilliant and much appreciated improvements too. Version 7.3.1 is their best effort today. Those of you on here boasting about other FTP programs would probably not appreciate the hard work these guys continually do to keep Interarchy "state of the art", so you guys should just keep using those programs. But for individuals that have actual needs.... and Interarchy addresses them.... it's worth every penny if you have not tried it yet.

JOSEPH WATT Popcorn? You got to be kidding. Have any of you actually tried to use this yet? I guess not, because if you had you would already know that it will not allow you to do anything with your "region free" info, provided via Mac The Ripper. Yeah, I fell for the "buy it now for just $29.00" rip off promotion that Roxio (oh that's right Sonic Solutions bought them out) offered for owners of Toast. Unbeknownst to me that this was a complete waste of money, I took them up their offer, only to find out that POPCORN (unlike the full version of Toast, which I had been using already for the final stage of DCD copying) could not and would not accept the VIDEO_ST files. Stating it contained copyrighted material. Now go figure. The full version of Toast will read and burn anything with one click, but POPCORN (from the makers of Toast) won't accept the very files that moments earlier burned fine in Toast. What's up with that?? I suspect that the people on here pushing POPCORN are either employees of Roxio (now Sonic Solutions) or just read about Popcorn and started spreading the word without actually using it. For the latter - won't they be surprised! You think paying for DVD2one pissed you off, wait till you shell out your money for POPCORN, only to be "turned away at the door" when it announces you can not burn the Mac The Ripper material.

JOSEPH WATT First off, let me say that I am extremely disappointed with the negative reviews of VP7. Before I purchased this program, I tried to find reviews of version 7 (XP Pro edition), but could only find reviews of 6.1. Then, when MacUpdates listed 7.01 update, I finally found reviews of the product. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I had already ordered the product and was awaiting it's arrival, when I began reading these reviews. I started panicking, thinking, "Can I get my money back?" and "Should I refuse it at the door, so I can get a full refund?" Instead, I accepted the package and began installing the product. Keep in mind, I don't have some fancy new G5 like all these "reviews" say they have. I just have a plain old G4, running at 1.25 MHz. Shame on all of you who gave this product a bad review!! Your comments were not helpful and just plain not true. Not only did this product install in record time, Windows XP Pro itself installed in a fraction of the time it took to install on my PC! These negative reviews were misleading and I am here to set the record straight for those of you like me, wondering if I should, or should not buy it. Now in fairness, I am not playing PC games on Windows XP Pro, but then again, that's why I bought the "Pro" edition - to run professional software. I can not rate the way the "games" play through VP7, but then again, I am not here to play games with this program, I am here to work! I installed Adobe CS Suite, Macromedia MX 2004 Suite, Office 2004 Professional, FoxPro 8 and 2 different vinyl restoration softwares, in under 1 hour! Exactly what part of this was slow?? I have yet to see the slooow part the "Negative Nancy's" on here are referring to. I have been running emulated PC programs on my MAC, dating all the way back to the first one called Soft Windows - all the way up through and including VP6.1 and talk about SLOOOOW. My God, just to open IE I celebrated a birthday while waiting. It must take 2 minutes just to get IE to open on VP 6.1 Well not on VP7! This new version screams! I can not believe how fast it is. Seriously. You click on something and "Woop, there it is". How they got this thing running this fast? I don't really care, but I am completely thankful they finally fixed this sucker - something Connetix NEVER could. Until I got VP7, I felt I had been robbed and then some. Not any more. I did read one reviewer who had the same reaction as me and offered up the idea that maybe the "beta" (free) version did not contain all the parts of the one you pay for. I don't know if this is true, because I never tried the "beta". If this is true, then thank God I did not try the "beta" first, otherwise I would be bitching like everyone else. I don't know what these "G5" people are talking about, but on a G4, this thing rips! Maybe they should trade in their G5's and get a G4? Seriously guys, they finally fixed Virtual PC, with version 7 and I personally recommend buying it. I am running the "stand alone" version, not the one included in the Office Professional package. This version is sold separately. The version I bought is VP7- WINXP Professional (not the home edition). I would give this six stars if the rating system went that high. It runs all my professional software at lightning speed and installs them faster than on my PC (What's up with that?). It may not run PC games that well, again I don't know because I do not own any PC games. I bought VP7 to run my professional software and it exceeds my expectations! Joseph Watt (Version 7.0.1)

ANONYMOUS who would expect to play games under vpc7 anyways! Stwange.. lol! fwiw, I used vpc6.1 with a G4 and it was very 'usable' & i was quite happy with this. But i was expecting a HUGE leap forward when i got the dual G5. Why? How can this be when all other software runs so much better? MS could do better - vpc7 SHOULD be much FASTER! Simple as that really. (Version 7.0.1)

WES I am considering buying an IMAC 1.8GHZ and have 1 PC program that I need to run on Virtual PC. This program has to do with a Polar S610I Heart Monitor. The monitor has an IR port that I can upload my heart rate data with to the PC. I understand that I can run the software but that VPC 6.1 can't control an external USB IR device. The only thing I need to find out is if VPC 7 could do this. Does anybody know?

PEPE I've not tested VPC anyway, just because anyone says it sucks!, but i'll give it a test, i'll risk $249 to test it but i have a little question... its more about curiosity: Why should you installed macremedia's and adobe's software under VPC anyway? what i do is networking, and every single piece of software for networking, even certification test practice have been written for wintels, but macromedia and adobe works the hell better on OSX than grinchdows does. ANONYMOUS Polar PPP software is explicitly NOT supported by Polar for use under Virtual PC. (in response to an earlier comment.) I have yet to try this with the brand new VPC upgrade to Version 7 on my desk, but given the pent-up demand, it would have been big news. There is a program that is suitable for use on the Mac natively, using the serial version of the IR link device and a serial-to-USB adapter. It is available at : www.otag.co.uk. I haven't tried it, since I just gave up an am using my physical XP box for the software. Blasphemy, I know. (Version 7.0.1)

Interarchy | Aug 5 2004 |
JOSEPH WATT Although we continue to monitor other FTP transfer software's on the market - Interarchy continues to be our #1 choice. The attention to detail and ease of use makes this worth it's weight in gold. Another plus is that multiple requests (both upload and download) are possible. Even-though a few other programs allow this option, eventually they either freeze or crash. This makes for a nightmarish circumstance, as we then do not know which files transfered, and which ones did not. None of these problems occur with Interarchy! (Version 7.2.1)

JOSEPH WATT I recently upgraded to the new "4.0.2" version of Limewire and I have to say, this is their best upgrade yet. The new features were not necessary, but really add to the already pleasurable experience this software has provided, since I started using it. Keep in mind, I am a "Pro" version user, so the "Free" version may differ somewhat, I wouldn't know. But if these same features are now added to that new version - you are in for a real treat. These guys just keep making this "thee" P2P software of choice. I do not understand the complaints, that there are so many updates on this program. After all, what's wrong with wanting to perfect anything? Other than MAC computers, with so many vendors making their own "custom" version of PC's, of course there will be "fixes" that address special configurations. No one can predict anything working correctly, until it's let loose on the world. The fact that they DO provide quick fixes, only shows a strong determination to their continued effort, to make their software the best it can be. That's a bad thing? I think not. (Version 4.0.2)

JOSEPH WATT Shortly after posting the previous review, we were contacted numerous times by the owner of SqidCam and several of his associates. This matter is resolved. It was NOT our intention to bad mouth this company, it's product, nor it's efforts. We posted our comments about the problem we were having, hoping those of you who got the program working, would write to us, telling us what WE were doing wrong. We hope that all of you reading this will try SQUIDCAM, as it is the best one available! (Version 1.5.1)

JOSEPH We have left three phone messages at the support number given at SquidCam's site and they have not return any. I made a trip to our offices in Florida (from Arizona), specifically to set up video conferencing between the two offices, to cut down on phone bills. On each message, I told the support phone recording machine, the information above and that I was going to be here for only 5 days and now I leave tomorrow morning (Sunday) without a single reply from anyone. I called each time eaxctly in the middle of the day (for them), but could not find a human to assist me to save my life. Thank God for iChatAV. We turned it on and it ran with no problems whatsoever. At least I am leaving with some form of video conferencing working. I sure wish I could get a refund on SquidCam as it has never worked yet. I have PC and MAC versions (yes I paid the extra $$ amount to get both and nothing on either. We followed every one of their :suggestions" to get things working, listed on their site. Nothing. Oh, I get my own camera shot perfectly, but I know how great I look I wanted everyone else to know too. If there's a line forming to get a refund, could someone save me a place? jw (very unhappy squid) (Version 1.5.1)

THE_SQUID Please check your spam filters! In this case, we have called the customer three times and (as of this morning) sent three support messages. Originally we were contacted on the MLK holiday (office closed), a second voicemail we received was from the following day, which is when we attempted contact. Unfortunately, it still looks like we're getting nowhere. I'm sorry Joseph hasn't received any of our replies and I'm glad he was able to find a solution. However, there's only so much we can do to contact a customer short of driving to Arizona and knocking on the door. Not trying to sound callous btw. (Version 1.5.1)

Apple Mac OS X Updater | Sep 23 2003 |
JOSEPH WATT Installed this new update late last night. Have been on it since 6:00am this morning, without any problems whatsoever, like the reviewer above me. I have had no complications from the update - including getting on the internet. Not once has the new OS update caused me to crash or restart. Everything is working as it was before. Thanks for fixing the disappearing Firewire drives. That was driving me and my staff crazy! (Version 10.2.8)
