WONDERING  P.S.

To see and understand their high priced update and subscription policies, just go to their website purchase page(s).

FileGuard X5
Nov 2 2007

WONDERING  I had purchased the Intego suite several years back when the bundle was reasonably priced. Some of the products were good, esp. the AntiVirus (it found PC viruses for me to not spread to my pc friends).

However, I declined to update when they started charging close to full price just for updates. Plus, they seem to structure it so that each Mac OS version upgrade also requires an Intego product update/re-purchase.

So I agree that their overall pricing, and annual update price schema is very expensive. Too expensive in my opinion. I am not sure who they are selling to now. Perhaps their European home market is more used to that high priced re-buy practice.

(I hope they will read these comments and take them to heart.)

Some of their products seem good. I am sure they would get more users if their pricing was more reasonable.

I have not tried this particular encryption offering.

ForkLift
Sep 24 2007

WONDERING  I looked at the feature list back when it was in beta/early development and it seemed to have a lot of potential.

So now that it is at v1.1, and on the MU special, I will take a better look.

I wonder if anyone (I haven't) has compared ForkLift to the other file manager contenders (Path finder I think is the main competition).

A Better Finder Rename
Sep 18 2007

WONDERING  This one looks good. I have used it in the demo mode a few times and it seems pretty 'robust' as they say.

i've also sent suggestion to developer and he seems very resonsive, good guy.

DiscLabel
Sep 13 2007

WONDERING  As noted below, I should compare this to the free lite version included with Toast (Disc Cover). I think I would tend to use it more for CD case liners and direct-on-cd rather than labels though, since I've read mixed opinions on stick-on labels. (But no shortage of opinions on that topic..._

Mah Jong Solitaire2

WONDERING  Looks nice. I gave a quick try to it. I'm not sure if I could get used to the way the board 3-d perspective keeps jumping around whenever I move mouse to click a tile. Guess I prefer a fixed 2-d angular perspective on the board. Otherwise seems good.

Keyboard Maestro
Aug 16 2007

WONDERING  Keyboard maestro may have some potential. Tho, I only saw it about 20 till e-o-d....

To Jerry,

YES! that one MS Word action : Paste Special Unformatted (so that resut MATCHES existing font format) is one of the HUGE user problems with MS Word. I created a Word Macro to do this.

WONDERING  It would be interesting to compare results of this app, with my own iTunes Playlists I have created with my own special groupings of: "contemplative", "relaxing", "meditation", "positive" and the like. (doesn't every body do this...? ;)

AlienConverter
Aug 9 2007

WONDERING  has anyone tried this yet?

Does it function like the old Dataviz MacLinkPlus Deluxe which used to be pretty popular years back?

(to be fair, I should point out that product is still produced and in development, I just havent updated my reg'd version in ages)

EazyDraw

WONDERING  Looks interesting.

I wonder how 'easy' is it in real use for non-graphic-pro people, and how does it compare to Intaglio, the other non-Adobe drawing app that I know of?

I will try to get some time to look at this one.

Path Finder
Aug 1 2007

WONDERING  I have used earlier versions of Path Finder, and it has many many features. New version 4.7.x looks to be faster, more powerful than previous versions.

WONDERING  This looks like a good option for confidential data when you don't want whole user/documents folder encrypted. Or when your confidential data is on a different partition. Will be checking it.

ViewIt
Jun 27 2007

WONDERING  follow up: I took a look and it seems very capable. Quite fast at the preview, and the page of thumbnail images as well. For that matter, being able to see all the images in the thumbnail format, without having to have them actually entered into the iPhoto database seems pretty good. I'm going to get it.

ViewIt
Jun 27 2007

WONDERING  I have looked at ViewIt over the years, but always looked for other options since $20 was too high for what it did. And the lite free version was stuck in a version warp of 2 years older. I may have to reconsider at 9.95.

Leopard Cache Cleaner
Jun 18 2007

WONDERING  I've used this (and had registered it) in its previous incarnation as Panther Cache Cleaner (PCC). It generally seemed to work well. Plus, its documentation did a good job of explaining about cache files and what the 'cleaning' was about.

WONDERING  did you get the refund?

I had attempted to get refund/update when I purchased QT Pro v5 key about two weeks before they released QT 6. No dice, no help, no good feelings over that one. :(

Microsoft Office 2004
May 8 2007

WONDERING  Yes, LQ (Laughing Quietly),

from the official MS site, for latest 11.3.5:

Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.3.5 Update

This update contains several improvements to enhance security and stability... In addition, this update includes all the improvements released in all previous Office 2004 updates.

Though, they point out that it is a 'combo' style update, so perhaps that makes it work better for people than their older practice of having to do them individually in sequence.

FrostWire
Apr 17 2007

WONDERING  It looks like it needs Java 1.5.x. (from Frostwire website, and MU has updated their reqs to show that now.)

I am not sure if Apple has issued a Java 1.5.x for Panther, I know they have issued it for Tiger.

I have always been a little mystified by the way Apple or Java or both come up with version ID: (from Apple site:) : "Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Release 3 includes version 1.5.0_05 and improves functionality of J2SE 5.0 on Mac OS X v 10.4 Tiger 10.4.2 and later. This release does not replace the existing installation of J2SE 1.4.2."

Media Rage
Mar 26 2007

WONDERING  I've been a registered user of Media Rage 2.x for a while. I have been satisfied with its abilities and find it a worthy product.

One of the things that I especially like about it is the finer control of tag information and updating that it allows, in contrast to the more limited options within iTunes. It also allows tag editing of music tracks whether they are in iTunes or not.

The developer seems to be a generally a responsive guy, and has implemented several of my suggestions on improvements.

That will help them get the next version more stable. 8-)

Transmission
Mar 16 2007

WONDERING  Also, even though the 'official' version is from June 2006, they do have a link to their Latest Beta build. You might give the latest 0.7 svn build a try.

http://chucker.mystfans.com/opensource/transmission/

I have tried those and they seem to be working. (I just wish that they would release a version 0.7, since it has been 8 months in the works, and does work ;)
