WIZZARD1 There used to be a product call MacMinder that was written and sold by a husband and wife educational company. I purchased and used it for a number of years and it always worked well keeping my daughter and her friends and guests in line while on the computer. You could restrict access by time of day, user, and particular application. It also tracked status of whole (and or a percentage) that each application was used. You could do reports and see which application was being used the most or was popular. Unfortunately the company went under and disappeared with no notification or further updates to its registered users. I believe this code last ran on 10.2/10.3 I believe but I have not tried it on any later versions. If anyone on this list wants this code and my registration number and a form that I have transferred it to you then please send me an email. The current application looks very much the same but not as much functionality from what I read and see. I have no use to download and try it. Maybe this new company has bought the code and is bring the application back under a different name but from the reader comments without alot of functionality as per what I described and charging beta users for upgrades. This is not good user/customer service. Do to these comments, you probably should stay away from this product as it may up costing you more money in the long run even if you try to help them out. They should be ashamed. Macminder still may be posted on macupdate. (Version 5.3.1)

- We never, ever charged for beta versions. - There had been angry comments in the past, but you should know that most of them were posted before the user actually contacted us... - We have been offering free support by mail, *for years* after the first release of Watcher. And even if you are using Watcher 3 running on Mac OS 10.3.4, we are happy to help you. We answer our mails as quickly as possible, sometimes on sunday evenings. So much for bad customer support! - We are not ashamed of our work ;-) In fact, we love developing for the Mac community and helping parents, and we are just proud of our product when a new "THANK YOU" email comes in! Hope this helps clearing the picture, (Version 5.3.1)

CheckUp | Sep 22 2009 |
WIZZARD1 I have been using this product since beta and it has always performed well; no slowdowns. All my testing has been on full loaded (memory wise and disk wise) mac laptops and desktops. Checkup works perfectly fine and has no performance issues. All test machines have 2 gig of memory or less - granted they are all intel if that makes a different to the general audience here. APP4MAC is slowly building in features. As much as some of the reviews say all can come from other free apps that is not always true as most app may have an extra fee for the add on or you may have to use multiple or you may have to use a generic drivers. I agree iStat may be an exception in some way but the menuing system when you turn on everything uses up much real estate in your bar. Both are great tools. Both package it nicely. I am not doubting that some of you may be having performance issues but these may not necessarily be related to CheckUP even if you remove it and all seems fine - you might still have a conflict from some other app. APP4Mac support has been great so if you have problems report any conflicts to them so they can adjust and fix if necessary. They are very helpful. And for you folks complaining at the price, you should have bought it during the beta phase and just shortly after when the price was much, much lower. I agree that currrent pricing may not be reflective of the apps features but the euro ain't cheap in comparison to other currencies. The developer believe that they should be charging that price - if you don't agree don't buy it; if the world feels the same then they will not make sales and the price might drop - this is the same with any product. Wonder if you same folks complain about the price of a windows os, upgrade, etc but you would still buy it or steal the code and use it for free. Whiners. If you try the product, don't like it and don't like the price, then delete it; no one wishes to hear you complain like someone is going to do something about it. Folks want to hear issues about real problems and not subjective views. Please keep them to yourself. (Version 2.5.2)

BOINC | Sep 9 2009 |
WIZZARD1 This beta version has issues in the installer. It is supposed to add a hidden group called "boinc_master" to any userid that is part of the admin group. It does not add it but it does add the other hidden "boinc_project". You can not access the software unless it adds you. I have to back to 6.6 of the software. Been using this software for years but I guess the beta still has many bugs in it. Otherwise use the stable version until all the bugs are worked out. (Version 6.10.4)

WIZZARD1 Just updated my 4.0 original CD to 4.2. All went fine. I can not remember where Alsoft creates the images that it creates so I can free up the disk space and they usually don't. Never had an issue with their updaters or apps. Great software and works well. Used to recovery some of my files on occasion. As well, it seems that their support is being knocked but with this I have always had great support. (Version 4.2)

VirtualBox | Jul 1 2009 |
WIZZARD1 The one good file that I did manage to download now works. I have to run the uninstall twice with a reboot in between. I think the uninstall also leaves files behind that don't work with 3.0 as well. As well, it does not install well upgrading 2.2.4. Since the dev does not use standard file locations and 'fixes' some file locations it is probably good to run the uninstall twice with a reboot. This however does not explain the 400 bad request at 98.53% when attempting to download from their site. Don't think it is an overload situation but a server reboot might clear the issue. WIZZARD1 Someone needs to contact whoever posts for download at VirtualBox/Sun. I have been trying to download 3.0 since it was released. Either it downloads and the app will not be start (bounces once) or it will not finish a download - gets to 98.53% and then hits 400 bad requests. I have tried to get ahold of them to make them aware but so far have been unsuccesful. There is nothing wrong with my connection at all as I have no issues downloading anything else including stuff from Sun and also much larger files. There is nothing blocking this. Please correct and repost a good build or fix your download servers. (Version 3.0)

Microsoft Office 2008 | Aug 12 2008 |
WIZZARD1 This did not work for me but I have tracked it down to the issue and MS should take note so they can fix their installer code. 1. Had no issues in any update to 12.1.1. 2. Removed languages files except English (you can remove them). 3. Tried the autoupdate; failed with that error message about not finding an valid install. 4. Tried downloading the dmg and tried installing; same error as in #3. 5. Install and download files were English. 6. Mounted a backup drive with a copy before language removal. 7. Autoupdate and downloaded file worked just fine on this version. 8. Copied all changes to main drive; MS 2008 works just fine. 9. Tried to run both update files against my newly updated MS 2008 (which all read 12.1.2); told me no valid installation. I was only expecting that it was already up to date. 10. MS needs to modify their installer and remove this darn bug. (Version 12.1.2)

Apple MacBook EFI Firmware Updater | Apr 9 2008 |
WIZZARD1 It is not noted in any of the documentation that this does not apply to a MACBOOK2,1. I have a macbook, 2 gig dual core and the update is not for it. This update is not for machook 2006 or early 2007; only from later 2007 and forward. it would be nice if this was documented. (Version 1.2)

WIZZARD1 THis is not an updater but a link to download not a demo version but four flash movies on the production. In software update never works or crashes. They told me that this would be fixed. Have to constantly send emails and waste my time to get updates which the program should provide. The person at the other end of the support email is just one person with no power and no management to discuss with either as they seem to be in a different country. the support person does only what he is able or mandated to do. I have tried to escalate but it is no help as it seems to be only him. While it is excellent software and it works for the most part, the support is neither timely or helpful especially when trying to get updates. The policy seems that even a minor revision can be chargable. Sorry you should not have to fight for the updates and they also should not be chargable. Does anyone actually know where the developers or main company live or a method to get ahold of them. All I get is promises ... (Version 11.6.2)

However, he does have a 30 day satisfaction guarantee polcy .. seek a refund if you paid for a "free" upgrade ... (Version 2.0.3)

WIZZARD1 This is an exact copy of the new forum from the author where he states that version 2 will be a free upgrade to current customers to show support - however he has been charging 39.99 US/CAD for the upgrade. I have sent him an email already asking for my refund of the purchase price. Gryphonnet and I were right about the author committing to this and I believe that his web site at that time also contained the same information. WIZZARD1 Yes, like Gryphonnet, I was under the understanding that it was supposed to be a free upgrade and I believe this information was originally published on the authors site. I have emails to the author on this but there has been no response to these queries. Yes, like Gryphonnet, I paid the CAD 39.99 to upgrade even tho over the years I have beta tested the app for the author and worked thru several issues with the product. Since the author relocated from to Toronto from his and mine original city, there has been a dramatic slow down in releases and information coming out of the author. Even when I ordered via his store, the author had my money for three days before a serial number was generated and I did not even get an email with the new serial number. I had to go on to the store and take it from my order. I used LL for a number of years as a replacement for Quicken and it worked well, however when the dev slowed down and promised releases never came out, I had to migrate to something else. At this stage, I am waiting for responses however I don't think I will get one and I am considering any longer term investment with this author rather guardedly. Overall the originally LL was a great start and my beta work with the author gave me a good feeling .. however move to 2007 ... (Version 2.0.3)

iRatchet | Jul 16 2007 |
WIZZARD1 Not too sure where the negative to the developer and the applications has come from? I have went back and read all the reviews but I can find nothing that would evoke such negativity. I have worked with the developer in the past and have been a beta tester of iRachet. "Mister Rogers" has been nothing but professional in all the dealings that I have been part of. He has accepted my critiques and feature request with grace and expediency. Anytime there has been an issue, the issue is fixed and a new build is released. I use this software and it is hands above anything else out there for the price. I have the other software from the other vendors and they work well but I like the interface and the easy nature that iRatchet handles my business needs. I firmly believe in reviews no matter how critical in nature but one must remember software is like art and it is one person's or one company's interpretation of a need - business or otherwise and it should be respected. I am not too sure what expectations are being demanded but try the software and if it does not meet your needs than try and use somthing else; do not trash the developer because it is not what you want or like to see. Please keep any nasty or slamming comments to yourself unless you can thoroughly justify your comments through fact and not fiction or personal conviction. It is time to act like an adult, respond like an adult, and comment like an adult - not like the whiny kids that may come across in the reviews. I pose a challenge to all you whiny folks - develope something better and go through all the processes necessary to put it out there like the develope has - maybe then the shoe will be on the other foot and maybe you will have some respect for another person's work.
