WERFBLAU  True — it is a great app. Thanks to the developer.

@JO SPOCK: I believe the problem with special characters like umlauts is at your end - I imported the parsed text-file into an OpenOffice spread sheet using Unicode (UTF-8) as encoding scheme - and had no problem with 'ä' etc. — everything is just fine. I checked the exported text file with a text editor (TextEdit doesn‘t get the correct encoding, too) — smart editors like BBEdit get all special characters without any problem.

WERFBLAU  I tried it on a Dual G5 PPC checking a couple of pages on a local host (PHP generated HTML) - no problems at all — but a couple of very interesting errors/warnings I‘ve never seen before - and the App is right; my code was not correct.

My first impression: A useful and needed tool for a web-developer.

Apple Java for OS X 10.5
Feb 13 2009

WERFBLAU  ESPIRIDION, I started to evaluate Yellow Dog - it looks nice, but they are even behind Apple for Java.

JOELLEVIN: I‘ll not jump into the Snow-Leopard - Apple managed it to get .0 releases at least as buggy as another commercial OS, so I‘ll wait and look on the PPC-Macs. I used to buy Family Licenses.

D9: It took Apple more than 2 years to get Java 6 to the Intel Macs...

I hope somebody from Apple reads this — the song is no longer "Apple is the best“.

Apple Java for OS X 10.5

WERFBLAU  @EAN: There‘s no 1.6 for PPC-Macs.

Unfortunately it‘s true: More and more Java-Apps require 1.6, so the PPC-Macs are out of the business.

Apple’s attitude does not only affect the Java-Platform, but also their own products like iLive - some functionality is only available for Intel-Macs!

Btw: I’m currently evaluating Linux - there are distributions for PPCs, too.

VueScan

WERFBLAU  I’m using this software for years - and it’s working fine. I agree partially to archdata’s comment, but I’d like to add that it’s indeed usable for people without this in-deep knowledge - as long as they stay away from the “More” option...

One big advantage is for me: I’m using it on a notebook travelling around the world with the need to use different scanners of different brands - and using VueScan means: No need to install scanner-specific software or drivers, no hassles with different philosophies on user interfaces - just plug it in and it works for most of the scanners.

I dont’t want to mention the support of some scanner-makers for the OS-X platform - VueScan helped me a couple of times to use a scanner being unsupported by the producer!
