DVD Cache

WDATKINSON  I've been looking for a good piece of software to catalog my DVD collection since starting my migration to Mac about a year ago. I'd tried and earlier version of this software and didn't care for it.

After seeing an updated version, I thought I'd give it another shot, but unfortunately I still enountered issues while trying to enter in my 200+ DVD collection:

1). When using the multi-UPC entry, and an actual bar-code scanner (the iSight scan option has NEVER worked for me on two different iSight equipped Macs) the initial entry finds the correct movie. As an example, the first season boxed set of Sopranos. Seeing that, I continue on and enter in another row of movies from my rack. Then the software wants to do additional lookups where it matched the correct movie/upc with an incorrect match. I have seven or eight boxed sets of different titles. Initially the software recognized them, but then as I continue through the process only one title out of maybe 10-15 actually makes it into my library.

2). When entering multiple UPCs there is no option to work with the list being going through the entire add process. So if you see a problem, you can do nothing about it until you finish the process.

3). When trying to use the iSight camera, memory growth brought my MacBook with 1GB of memory to its knees. Within a few minutes I was using 1+Gb of virtual memory and 800+ meg of real memory. I killed the program and restarted and the minute I activated the iSight memory usage goes through the room. But as I said, I've never gotten the iSight option to work anyway.

I would seriously register this product in a minute if it would do what I need to do.

WDATKINSON  So far I've been unable to duplicate the behavior, but as I recall:

1). Launched the application

2). Observered normal temperature display

3). After a few inutes (10-30, I suspect) I glanced at the display and it showed 0/32.

After killing the app and restarting it, I've noticed no further behavior.

I work for a software company and as luck would have it, am currently in the Testing department. I understand how a report like this can be frustrating, since it can't be be repeated, but the similarity to the G5 Quad issue was uncanny. That's why I reported it.

I'm happy to do anything I can to help you out, but so far, its a non-repeating issue.

WDATKINSON  I'm seeing the 0/32 C/F bug on my new Black Macbook. I simply exited and restarted the program and it seems to be working fine now.

So I suspect the reported bug isn't limitd to the G5 Quads.

CHUCKER23N  WDATKINSON,

per current design of the application, the temperature will always be recorded as "0 degrees C" (which in turn would be converted to 32 F) whenever no actual data is available; this will be improved soon.

However, I'm curious why this would cause problems on your MacBook. How long did you wait when you first had it open? It may take a few seconds until SpeedIt starts providing data.

CHUCKER23N  In case it happens to you again:

1) check if the SpeedIt kext is working ("kextstat | grep speedit" in Terminal should do),

2) try and get SpeedIt's reported temperature yourself ("sysctl kern.cpu_temp" in Terminal).

I suspect the former is the problem, that is, for whatever reason, the kernel extension wasn't loaded properly.

However, this wouldn't affect PowerPC users.

"I understand how a report like this can be frustrating, since it can't be be repeated" — yep! It's very hard for me to reproduce these problems or figure them out, since I only have one machine to work on. Still, I appreciate your response. :-)
