VJL  I use their IPNetRouter product on an old OS 8.6 box and can attest to the quality of their software. That said, it appears that a lot of the tools [finger included!] are in both Tiger and Leopard's Network Utility. Other part of this utility can be downloaded for free [the TCP dump util].

I think their Classic apps had a big advantage, as these utils were not available for OS 7/8/9, but with Mac OS X being UNIX-based, it is harder to justify the cost of this program, even at 50% off.

VJL  BTW, I am confused - the description says this comes with 23,000 images, which is the retail version that is $49.95. It is also 1.2GB in size. The $44.95 version is smaller and comes with 1,100 images.

I assume this is for the standard version, not the retail version? If so, the description needs to be updated please!

VJL  This company makes quality software and has a support and sales team that replies to questions, unlike their "SOHO" competitors. I can highly recommend every product they make, even their new 3D interior design program [something that doesn't quite fit their publishing software niche].

Note that this is the standard edition - the retail box version is $5 more or a 1.2GB download!

VJL  Wow! I'm pleasantly surprised to see this offered on mupromo! Some lucky commenter is going to really get a good deal! I've tested this app before and I like it, though for my needs the enterprise license would be what I want. Since the price was a bit out of my range, I haven't bought it. But with today's deal..hmmm....

If you're a sysadmin for one or more systems, this is a great app and one that includes a great deal of plugin support.

VJL  While this app looks pretty good and comes from a good developer, the screenshot really needs improving. Instead of "task1" and "project 1", there should be real life example data, to help people realize what this can do for one's organizational skills. The above screenshot fails this dramatically, I'm afraid. :(

Jotter
Oct 23 2007
*****

VJL  This is one of those, "why didn't i think of that" apps. So simple, but so useful! A small pencil in your menubar - click it and access notes that you've typed. Or create a new one; or create a new one with the contents of your clipboard. And no mouse required either - you can setup hot keys for both types of new notes.

And the best part - when you're done typing your note, just close the pop up window. No saving required!

You can export notes, change the fonts in them, print them, and delete them. Notes can also contain graphics which is cool [esp. if you have a graphic in your clipboard].

My only complaint about the software, and it is a small one, is that the area around the pencil in the menubar is too large. I have a few icons in my menubar, so I like them to be as tightly together as possible. With the pencil icon of Jotter, there is a lot of space to the right and left of the icon that should be trimmed.

Oh, and well worth the money - great value for those that have thoughts they like to jot down and quickly get out of the way afterwards....great app!

RAGE Domainer
Oct 23 2007
****.

VJL  The Mac domain management field has been sorely lacking for quite some time. RAGE software, with the exception of one app, specializes in website management/creation software, so it only makes sense that they step into the domain management field.

Which this is a version 1.0 app, complete with a few bugs, it has *great* potential. While most of the bugs are more UI issues, there is one bug that zapped me pretty good - if one enters a domain that has not been setup yet, the spinning beachball appears for a minute or so, completely freezing the program [the first times this happened, i force-quited the app, but later i became more patient and realized it was timing out after a while]. I've sent a bug report to RAGE, and they are looking into it, but that is the only reason I marked the stability down to a 3 - hand entering about 20 domains that had the spinning beachball got me a wee-bit miffed. :)

But the rest of the app is 95% polished and very easy to use. It lets you view your domains in list view, list with a fixed small thumbnail of the site, and a thumbnail only view that reminds me a bit of Delicious Library or Coda.

When you select a domain, the lower pane shows you google and other ranking info for the domain name only. This is a bit important - if you have www.example.com setup and don't redirect example.com to it, then if you enter the domain name without the 'www' prefix, the google ranking and alexia ranking, etc, could be far off. In general it is good practice to setup your webserver to use a 301 redirect so that example.com maps to www.example.com [or vice versa, whichever you prefer].

The only other problem I have had with the app [which just started today and not yet reported] is that twice it started using a massive amount of CPU while running in the background.

One nice thing about the trial, by the way, is that, while it limits you to displaying just 3 domains, you can remove the 3 and put in another 3. This is helpful in that you can see what kinds of results domains you may not own bring back [try displaying google.com or msn.com or yahoo.com to see a lot of info in the lower pane!].

All in all, a very, very well done app, and one that is clearly leading the domain management niche for Macs. $40 may seem steep, but this is really the only app in town that does a good job. RAGE could charge nearly anything - those who maintain and monitor a lot of apps will still find it a bargain [it is cheaper than using some online monitoring services].

I look forward to a 1.1 release and further development. This v1.0 is a solid start to a product I look forward to using for a long time.

Oh, two things I forgot - while Domainer may keep your data in a special format, RAGE is nice enough to give users an Export menu option so that one can export to CVS. That is a *great* feature and shows open-mindedness in development. The other thing that is great is the iCal syncing. Domain expiring soon? Thanks to iCal, you'll be on top of it, as Domainer puts the expiry dates into iCal to make sure you don't forget to renew your domain[s]. Very cool!

RAGE Domainer
Oct 23 2007

VJL  Ouch! I just bought this on Sunday at nearly full price [RAGE newsletter discount]. I do like this app a lot; it has a few v1.0 bugs which i've reported, but I am a happy user of 2 of their other products and I know they are very active developers. While the original price is a bit steep, the *very* short list of Mac domain management software that came before this has not been good at all! I think RAGE realizes this and made a quality product and feels that if people want a good domain management app, they will pay for it. I have it watching nearly 200 domains and other than a few bugs, it has done a great job!

For jotting something down quickly, I could, and sometimes do, create a new document in TextMate, but then I have to save it to a certain location, outside where I save normal TextMate-created documents, etc. I like that there is no 'save' with Jotter - just close the window, it's there in the menu bar.

VJL  macmansc: I looked on efax.com's site, and to e.mail faxes costs $17USD a month. The free service only allows incoming faxes to an e.mail address. Sending a fax via e.mail costs money. :( Back in the day, I remember some kind of freenet like network that was a fax/e.mail gateway. Kinda a P2P like server where different people in different area codes sent faxes on behalf of others; wonder if that is still an option. Could be used with this fine app then!

VJL  Something I've noticed with mupromo.com since they changed the layout [since the $49 bundle]. The page does not function when viewed in Firefox 2.x. The clock doesn't work, the two apps simply have icons but no names or descriptions. I really like and want to support this site, but until lately, I was able to do so on Firefox. Please don't force users to use a particular browser to see descriptions of the programs. Thanks! :)
