VICJOE  Please ignore the 1st paragraph of my previous comment; due to carelessness, I had "MacSpeech" and "MacUpdate" mixed up at the moment I typed that line.

VICJOE  Actually, I misread the original material, I thought it said "MacSpeech Admin" not MacUpdate Admin. Pardon me for any confusion I may have caused.

Maybe you could change your CSS sheet to make the name under Author a larger type size.

VICJOE  Something's gone wrong with this company. Attitude: first, as others have mentioned, link to softare gets a "forbidden" page; if you look at the reply to one user commenting on that issue you'll see " We here at MacUpdate have no control over any developers' website, so you must contact the developer regarding why they have posted bogus download links. (8/28/2006, Version: 1.7.0.6)"

So, MacUpdate is being called a site that deals in "bogus" downloads eh? Pretty insulting.

I recently purchased from MacSpeech an Olympus digital recorder. I live in Canada, so chose a shipping option (higher cost of two); turns out they had it shipped from a Canadian associate, meaning cheaper shipping, but I didn't know that, not shown on their purchase page.

Then when I tried to register the Olympus D-20 on Olympus' site, there was no entry to do that particular model. A call to Olympus informs that the recorder was "discontinued" and had been made exclusively for the now-defunct Radio Shack Europe.

Then I noted my credit card hadn't been charged. I sent them an e-mail about this, it bounced saying "Hi. This is the qmail-send program at longspur.kayako.com.

I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses.

This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out."

I called (my dime) and person I spoke with couldn't deterine is/what was wrong, after a 14 min. combination but did mention the sent the item from a Canadian associate (it did indeed arrive). In the end I got a message about a month later that my purchase had cleared and 'shipped' (I'd already had it for 3 weeks). About the bounced e-mail, he said they'd had some problems, it is a big internet and that happens sometimes (twice in a short row for me).

I sent them a summary of my difficulties, they promised to get back to me, reply didn't cover my concerns (esp. about the overpayment for shipping and my loss of money by shipping late, and about the recorder being a discontinued model that has no place to register on the Olympus site).

I did eventually receive a reply, but they did not addrtess the discontinued model issue, so I sent a reply about this, and this time got "Auto Reply - no humans involved here (was Re: order 18451F76-4518CE9C-702-16B706 (DS-20))" I'd sent my message to sales@macspeech.com and the auto-reply suggested I send my message to the same address I'd just been rejected from.

Then to decide if I really wanted this app, do some research on it, I went to the MacSpeech site, where I encountered a dozen or so messages saying ""You have arrived a page that does not currently exist." Everyone has temporary problems with their sites, but this has been going on from mid-July to mid-October. I asked them by e-mail when their billing and site issues would be solved so I could make another purchase, but they won't talk to me anymore, presumably because I raised the issue of their selling a discontinued recorder. My message didn't bounce 'cause it had a return receipt tag on it. I'm simply being ignored.

Prospective purchasers should think of my experience and ask themselves if they want to expose themselves to what I got.

No, We here at MacUpdate posted to the effect that *we* have no control over any developers' website. If a developer posts a bad link to a download at her/his site, we can't make it right, only the developer can.

No one accused us of posting 'bogus' downloads.

RTF2HTML
May 7 2006

VICJOE  Apple's TextEdit does the same thing when choosing to "Save as" an RTF file as HTML using the built-in Cocoa HTML Writer engine, however RFT2HTML is a bit more flexible so provides another option. They each produce different renderings of HTML, neither of which is altogether satisfactory, but a starting place. I just wish there were something like the old GoClick (OS 9) for OS X, as it reproduced a Word file exactly without weird Word HTML code.

ZTerm
Mar 20 2006

VICJOE  Here it is almost 4 years since the last review; well, sure the Internet, except for a few exotic functions, has replaced terminal programs, but I predict a resurgence of modems and terminal emulation, once the U.S. Defense Dept. and the corporatocracy implement pending plans that will limit the privacy, scope of and increase the relative cost/benefit of the Internet. As people search for options, it is likely that there will be a resurgence of FidoNet and like alternatives.

ZTerm works fine with OS 10.4.5, even to an external USB modem. I'd say it is at least something to keep around (along with a decent modem), you never know when you may need to use it.

VICJOE  Newer version exists!! (5.1.6) I don't know about people with Iomega drives, but with a 3rd party LG drive, I have been a completely satisfied user of this sofware for years. When I updated to OS X 10.4.5, I encountered a crash with 5.0.47. I e-mailed tech support, and was immediately sent an entirely new version, 5.1.6, which is solid as a rock.

These people make great software, but are not as adept at keeping their users informed. I couldn't find the 5.1.6 update on their site. If you have a paid copy, it is worth e-mailing them for an update (very quick response), it does so much more than Apple's plain jane burning that I couldn't function without it. Matter of fact, I'd say just buy the current version from the Web and if it doesn't work, ask for the update. Copy one disc to another with no image or scratch file, video CD, bootable CD, incremental sessions, convert AAC to AIFF, burnproof protection, etc., all that good stuff, it is all there, a combination of simplicity and elegance. I generally appreciate Apple's minimalist approach, but when you want to really get down to business with CD/DVD burning, you can't go wrong with Discribe. Disclaimer: I have no business or other association with Charismac Engineering, I just think they write a**kicking software. Don't whine-just buy it!

VICJOE  The developer now informs users that this software is "unsupported." Whether it still requires the $15 registration code to exceed the trial number of uses is not clear. Unsupported shareware should revert to freeware.

Mellel

****½

ANONYMOUS  I was initially charmed by this program, but as a recent late-adopter to OS X (Tiger) I have a slew of Word 2001 documents to import. Mellel couldn't import anything even slightly more complex than a simply formatted page, e.g. all the files I've created as Word stationery, or an 8.5 X 14 landscape with columns document. All these came into Mellel via Import as useless. By contrast the (admittedly slower) NeoOfficeJ handled the same documents just fine.

Conclusion: this application is fast, intuitive and solid, but if one has Word documents of any complexity to import, alas they don't show up even close to the original. I wish the developers the best and will likely revisit this product when version 2.0 comes out.

ANONYMOUS  Mellel is much better in importing RTF, this is the format you better use for work document importing.

MICHAEL BYWATER  Mellel, like everyone else (Word keeps its icky format close to its chest) relies on the built in Tiger conversion tools which aren't nearls as complex an robust as RTF. I batch-converted all my Word files and heaved them into Mellel and, to be frank, I never revisit Word except for marking student essays (they like to get the putzy little Comments, probably because they're easire to read than my pencilled notes).

Just finished my second book in Mellel. The first one will be Book of the Week at Christmas (read by Stephen Fry indeed) so Mellels clearly pretty fit for purpose...
