VERSANICK  Okay, the problem seems to be when full screen is enabled. To disable it, you now have to go to your iTunes Preferences, then hit Advanced, and then turn off full screen (at the bottom).

Works great non-full screen.

VERSANICK  Nevermind - I deleted everything in the iTunes Plug-Ins folder related to Eyephedrine, and the .plist, then the .preferences, and installed from scratch.

However, the .pkg program still says 'Upgrade', and the 'Installation' takes just as long as the upgrade from 2.20 to 2.63 took. And although the 'Options' in iTunes for it are far advanced from 2.20 (clearly the 2.63 is listed and the options are there), no matter how I put in the options (or put in my reg or not), same effect. Seems to turn full screen, then some strange graphic (corner of cover art?) conquers the screen in a very still fashion.

VERSANICK  I'm not sure if 2.63 was the iTunes 7 answer, but I'm simply letting dev know (if he doesn't) that for me it does the exact same thing that 2.20 does. Should I trash everything eyephedrine related, then do a fresh 2.63 install?

apparently Apple uses OpenGL in this view and makes some troubles with my plugin which is trying to use OpenGL onto the same surface

please try the visualizer avoiding this view and let me know, thanks for your tests

VERSANICK  I had reinstalled iChat from Tiger Installation disc with Pacifist, then updated with the 10.4.3, .4, .6 Mac OS X updates to get the latest version of ichat.app and ichatagent.app... but guess what... needed the whole InstantMessage Frameworks folder. So upon replacing everything, on developer's advice, iChat and CHAX works amazing!

Great program, makes me want to trash Adium, all of a sudden!

****.

VERSANICK  First, this really does have pretty heavy system requirements. I have a 9600XT overclocked with ATIcellerator, and I can't have the detail settings too high (dual 1.8 G5, 1GB RAM).

Assuming you have the hardware to chunk this monster out, the sound is the first thing you notice that is pretty average. Until you check high quality for sound (which doesn't make it THAT much better), the sounds are static and climb over one another when they're all going on at once, like a room full of hungry kids at a birthday party, and there's no cake to show for. But like many others, sound's not a big deal for me. And this is still in beta. The sounds themselves are fine and pretty standard. Nothing too annoying or ridiculous.

Graphics are pretty decent. Most newer cards will support 2x and more anti-aliasing (and if not, no big deal really), and the graphics settings are pretty straightforward to set up. I think what taxes your video hardware so much is the massive range that you're allowed to scope when aiming at enemies. I consider it more a pro than a con. It doesn't seem at first like the graphics are that amazing, but once you get playing, they do the job just fine.

The game's online-played 'capture the base' style works well in a big game. Quickly, the enemies can all surround your base, and you can hardly spawn a tank. You get great selection of units to pick for yourselves, or you can lay mines and turrets. Team communication is simple, and even voice commands are available (but I haven't played with them). Having lots of human players would make it a lot more entertaining. Single player missions are just as stimulating, at least for now.

The game seems stable and runs well. It takes a while to load a map, but that's like complaining that the computer takes too long to start up. Once it's going, it's going great. Overall, it looks like a very interesting game, oriented toward multiplayer online play. And I dig it. Choose your battle vehicle, and make your team proud. Careful though... the enemy's weapons (and yours) carry quite a range. You could get attacked at any moment.

Overall, very playable for a beta, and looking forward to a full release (not to mention that it's available for Win, Lin, and Mac all at the same time at the same level... a definite +). Too bad it's not universal yet. I assume it will be. Sorry Intel guys!

VERSANICK  10.4.5 dual G5 Chax won't work when installing it for just my current user. iChat will log in by my menubar item, then iChat opens/closes immediately with

PID: 2443

Thread: 0

Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)

Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000020

iChat works fine after removing.

Then when installing for all users, the same problem, but a slightly different PID

PID: 2453

Thread: 0

Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)

Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000020

except this time... when I try to remove it, it says Chax could not be removed from your system. Check your permissions and try again.

Maybe a repair permissions will work? I'm an admin on the computer... the program looks great when it works, but it doesn't seem to want to work for me.

VERSANICK  First, let me reccomend this to anyone with an interest in Astronomy, or who is taking in Astronomy-related class somewhere (I sure wish I had this years ago when I was taking Astronomy in college).

Now, an amazing 3-dimensional adventure through the solar system and much more. To this minute, I've been through mostly the entire Milky Way, and I don't even know how far this program maps. This is amazing.

Very easy to learn how to navigate around. Drag around with the mouse, or use your arrow keys, travel at 100 m/sec or 100 times the speed of light, or on the scale of astronomical units per second (1 AU is the distance from earth to sun)... impressive, easy to turn on/off labels of orbits, planets, constellations, and much more (all easy to find in Preferences). You can even see cities, mountains, and other things, all at the click of the mouse.

Great choices of rendering paths (for graphics) from Basic to OpenGL 2.0, and many things in between (which will work better with different video cards, old and new). It will even tell you (in most cases) if you cannot use the selected rendering option. There's something for anyone. Beautiful graphics. I suggest that you see for yourself. It's hard to describe the fact that I can see almost every detail of the moon, as deeply as I've ever studied its surface. Very, very impressive on my 19" monitor on my G5 tower.

There's even a 'Favorites' menu (akin to Bookmarks). Zoom from planet to start to constellation in seconds. There is so much you can do with this program. Or just leisurely show your friends what a cool program you found.

I highly suggest this for anyone _teaching_ astronomy as a professor or teacher. Chris Laurel, and anyone else involved in developing this deserves credit for the most impressive and comprehensive (yet simple in nature) space exploration app I've seen that is so easy to use, even a relative computer novice can tool around.

And free. Props. I honestly can't say anything negative. Congrats on an amazing app. I wish I found this a long time ago.

VERSANICK  Does what it says. It's free. No one can complain.

I like it. And I'm going to use it. Nothing I need to say to review it other than it does exactly as it says it will. Simple, small, and free. If it sounds good (when you read it), then it will be good.

If you'd rather use something else, then do it. Can't knock a free program that does what it says. No problems so far.

NeoOffice

*****

VERSANICK  For those of us not savvy enough to make OpenOffice work, this is the cream of the crop. Better than life.

+Exactly+ Microsoft Word's old menu framework, most of the tools and so on in the same place, and ease of use is exactly the same. Those who have been using Word for years (even if at work or school) will quickly recognize where everything is in NeoOffice.

Very decent speed considering its use of java, very stable, and makes a great solution if I don't have hundreds of dollars to shell out for MS Office.

Thank you, developers! Beautiful job! And you can't beat the price (free).

Kensington MouseWorks X
Feb 2 2006
*****

VERSANICK  Still don't know what the update does. I just went from 2.6 to 2.9.

However, with every Kensington mouse I've ever had (7 mouses on 3 different macs over the past several years), they all randomly will have the cursor fly to the corner of the screen (the top left corner, for instance) out of nowhere, upon slight movement of the mouse. I've gotten two of them replaced free of charge, I've re-installed software, I've brought them back, etc etc etc. It still seems to happen. It's not as common now with my Optical Elite, but it still exists once in a while.

Great product in general, and great ability to adjust acceleration and speed of cursor movement. Great product.

VERSANICK  Excellently executed. Free. Very comparable to high-end Windows available Game programs. Conway's Game of Life is amazing. For those who don't know, a grid, including squares which are either, we'll say, 'on' or 'off', governed by only the rule that if there are either 2 or 3 'on' squares touching a square (aka adjacent above, left, right, or below, and up-right, up-left, down-right, down-left), that square will be 'on' during the next discrete time step.

So in timestep 1 (we'll call it 1 instead of 0) two squares start out 'on', separated by a space between then. In the next time step, that space in between them will be 'on', and the two original squares (and all others over the entire grid) will be 'off'. A few other sets of rules other than the 2-3 rule can work, but surprisingly few sets of rules produce such interesting results as the 2-3 rule. Without going into any more detail, this program is at least worth a look if you're at all interested in what this is about.

The only thing I'd like to find is a universal Turing Machine. It is said that anything in known existence (and unkown) can be realized by this machine. Anything that could possibly be calculated by the mind, or computer, or entities unkown to humans.. it really is something to behold.

Great job with this program. Worthwhile if you're a College professor or student in higher math, as Conway's Game of Life will surely be something that you'll come across. Other reasons it could be so worthwile have not all been realized yet.

Fetch Art for iTunes
Dec 12 2005
*****

VERSANICK  Amazing little AppleScript. Upon installation of the .pkg, you can open your itunes library, 'select all' (apple + A), then hit the little applescript script in the menu, and 'fetch art'.

Then select the first song on the list, scroll to the bottom, hold shift and click on the last song on the list (to select them all), then Fetch the artwork. Press OK as needed (for things that can't be fetched), and watch the artwork appear in all of your iTunes library as it wasn't before.

This is an impressive little piece of work. I always wondered where people got their artwork. I use Eyephedrine (which I reccomend) for visuals, DJ and use a projector on the wall with it, and some of the textures use the 'cover art' of the song. This little program will load the cover art into the .mp3 or AAC.

You'll love it for what it does, and for the price it is. This is seriously a great little program/Applescript. No problems on OS X 10.4.3, itunes 6.0.1(3).

Once in a while, it'll seem to hang on an artist it can't find, but minimize it, and go to something else. iTunes can keep playing, or whatever. Then open it back up after a little while, and it'll unhang.

The price is right.

PAUL KOPALEK  This is an amazing utility. I'd like to send the developer some money. Why? As other reviews below will say, this utility does a LOT of different things that you must pay for to get in other utilities. Repairing permissions, optimization, many hidden appearance options, all kinds of cache cleaning (including system and kernel caches), safari options like enabling the Debug menu, and 'fast' speed of display of web pages (which if you don't have already enabled, is a must).... and it's extremely stable, and very small. 4.1MB is nothing for this. You can even enable the developer or server versions of 'crash reporter'. Change startup modes to save, single, and so on...

This utility is a MUST HAVE for ANY OS X user, in my opinion. Even if you find yourself on a 56k phone modem right now, this 4.1MB download will be well worth your time. Trust me. I've used Macs since I was old enough to use a computer, and have seen many utilities and products. This even takes care of some of the duties of Disk Warrior and TechTool (which both are now lagging behind in 10.4 compatability)..

The bottom line is, download this. Amazing. Small. Free. There's no reason not to have it. 5/5 genuinely in every category.

Thank you,

drive through

Toast Titanium
Oct 5 2005
*****

PAUL  I'll never download updates from a company whose software I must register with the company. I won't register my Beatles' multi-disc album with Capitol Records, I won't register my 5-speaker sound system with JBL, I won't register my Brief History of the Universe with Stephen Hawking, and I certainly won't register Toast Titanium X with Roxio. An expletive would be appropriate to describe my upset demeanor.

Aside from that, 7.0 is an excellent update to 6. After wasting my money on Popcorn only months before 7 came out, I found myself as angry as I was with the need to register my product, only at myself for assuming that they wouldn't do such a thing.

Popcorn is now worthless, and Toast X 7 is a great program. I suppose I'll find myself updating with Toast 8, whenever that comes out, and I'll also not register that, as I didn't register Popcorn or 6. (and, by the way, Popcorn didn't work with Tiger because I couldn't update).

Good day. Good program. Poor policy.

PAUL  This program is amazing. It takes up very little processor time, 40-50MB of RAM when very busy, is very stable, and loves to do what it does.

Very easy to use, simple, intuitive interface. I can stare at the 3D Swarm for hours. It's an interesting thing to watch. Comprehensive and simple (but complete) preferences, including max upload rate, max uploade rate settings for new torrents, max up and down connections, easy file lists, and so on.

This has, with one use, become the only torrent client I'll ever need. Beautiful, stable, simple, light.. this one's a winner. You owe yourself to give it a try if you ever, even ONCE, want to use Bit Torrent.

You definitely can't beat the price.

arKaos Visualizer

PAUL  Great product. Especially free.

Some beautiful visuals, and just an example of what visuals can be made with the VJ program. Unfortunately, this is the first time I picked up this visualizer in years (not since SoundJam MP was the program to have, and osx wasn't out yet).

So I can't find any home made visual files anywhere on the internet. Does anyone know where to find some? It doesn't seem that there exists a "User Zone" on arkaos's website anymore. And the forums don't have anything.

Either way, great adjustments for beat sensitivity, and so on. Beautiful and optimized rendering. Full screen mode is smooth and beautiful. Best visualizer that I can find... GForce is good though. There are other nice ones, but arKaos's is beautiful, simply put. Stable and easy to work.
