VALENS  There used to be a very good xiang qi implementation for OS 9, but not so much for OS X.

It'd be great if this can be improved further. First, an option to use the other side, not just the first-moving player. Multiplayer would be cool, even if it's just "hotseat" style (non-networked) games when I'm too lazy to break out the real board + pieces. Ability to save a game, when I can only play a few moves and need to go somewhere.

The drag-and-drop algorithm for pieces need to be fixed, because several times I've dropped a piece down, only to have it land to the immediate left or right of where I placed it. On some other occasions, I try to move a piece, only to end up moving a piece immediately next to it. Either fix this or implement Undo.

Movement of opponent pieces should be animated more, or there should be some other display of move history. Sometimes I can't even tell which piece the opponent moved.

In any case, a good first pass. The AI algorithm seems reasonable, but I'm a mediocre player.

VALENS  Ok, at 40 percent off, you've got me. Must be a psychological thing. $10 isn't shouldn't have been a big deal, but it got me to get out my credit card.

VALENS  It does, however, run fine under two G4/PPC 7450s, using the same Java environment 1.5.0_06-112.

problem with the ppc64 part of the code, perhaps...

***½.

VALENS  Wow. Some of you people really are useless without a pretty GUI.

I came across SheepShaver first on Linux. It worked okay for my needs then, which was occasionally running a few old Mac programs. On an old Pentium 3 the speed is tolerable. If you need to run old programs on the new Core Duos, give this a shot.

If you're avoid the command line like the plague and aren't willing to read a few man pages, you might look elsewhere. This is a typical Linux tool - best compiled from source and not designed for the lazy.

Gimp.app

VALENS  ...X11 is the most cross-platform windowing environment of all, supporting architectures from your run of the mill x86 to DEC Alphas running BSD. X11.app is universal, and trivially so because Xfree86 has been supporting numerous architectures for a long time.

X11 shouldn't affect your current windowing system (bveyond taking up a few megs of disk storage) at all, once you quit X11.app. All it does is run a Xserver.

VALENS  Thanks for insulting my intelligence. With merely anecdotal evidence, no less.

Ever consider the fact that maybe your local machine setup is to blame?

VALENS  This is why people shouldn't use proprietary compression formats. All these .sits and .sitx files mean that we're subject Allume's tender mercies if we ever want to see our files again.

Bah.

VALENS  This would be much more useful if it had syntax highlighting. Or an easy way to manage .h files for that matter.

I know this is for simple and quick code editing (as opposed to the massive overhead involved in starting up Xcode projects), but you really can't do without syntax highlighting.

As is, you might as well use emacs or vim.

VALENS  Wohoo. Finally. Freespace 2 on the Mac, after all these time...I remember playing through the campaigns on a friend's PC years ago and wishing someone would port it.

As of time of this post, the download links don't work. But hopefully they will some time.

MACUPDATE ADMIN  The download links do work, the servers are apparently quite busy. I just now tried the primary download link and it worked, I then stopped the download and attempted to start it again, it did not begin again. This tells me the servers are very busy.

SECTION8  no, the link actually seems to be broken. I logged on to the server using Transmit and browsed to the folder specified but nothing was there that resembled Freespace.

MACUPDATE ADMIN  Well, once again I was able to get one of the download links to work, I believe it was the 'ftp3' link.

But once again, minutes later, I could not repeat the success with that link or any other. Strange.

MARKMULLE  We're working to clear things up but the game has become very popular and the servers have been hit with over 3,000 download requests since this was made public. You should have better sucess with the alternate download links at the end of the description.

FAHJR56  The link dose work i am downloading it at this very moment but apparently the server is very busy because it took me several tries to get the thing to start plus it is a very big file i can see it's 1.43 GB and its moving at about 47 KB pr sec.

I guess everyone will just have to be very patient.
