The newest update is 12.1 - perhaps you've installed 12.01 already.
You might also make sure your AutoUpdate app is the latest version.

Type: ReviewDate: 28 Mar 2008 14:17Use this app to replace your HD icons with custom ones. It works well, is fast, and FREE.
And to top it off, the author has also made some free gorgeous HD icons you can use with this.
In fact, he made the app so that users of his icons would have an idiot proof way to install them.

Type: CommentsDate: 17 Mar 2008 12:33I'm sorry, but using the opt out distribution email as your only way of informing users the new version obsoletes the license of the old one doesn't cut it.
A "read me" file with the download archive or something similar would help, along with a note with your MacUpdate post of your new version.
Although I probably followed the MWSF show news to some degree, your app definitely fell under my radar.
I certainly do appreciate the link to the old version, but it should be made obvious for those that made the mistake of overwriting the file with the new one.

Type: CommentsDate: 24 Feb 2008 07:24How about some heads up the the new version (2) won't work with 1.1x licenses - particularly the ones bought here on MacUpdate in late July 07?
If one copies the download here onto his/her hard drive, it will overwrite the version 1 copy. There doesn't seem to be any link on the BlueMango web to get the version 1 app.
Furthermore - three versions for 2? Yuck!
This app has been very useful to me in the past, but with upgrade practices like this, I have to question whether I will support this developer any further. I would have been more than willing to PAY for the upgrade had the developer been forthcoming about upgrade fees.
And I have to agree that the new interface is worse than the old one.

Type: CommentsDate: 9 Feb 2008 19:35Thanks for the tip.
I'm aware of how to set an app as a startup item.
However, I imagine most Mac users won't know.
And menu bar apps generally should autoboot.

Type: ReviewDate: 9 Feb 2008 08:58This has now replaced Meteorologist (Meteo) as my favorite menu-bar weather app.
-The icons are great.
-The changing weather pop up is way cool.
-The drop down menu is informative and easy to use.
-It's free.
-It works OUTSIDE THE USA, even in Japan where I live.
My only quibbles are that it doesn't seem to autoupdate, or have an option to select it as a startup item.

Type: TroubleshootingDate: 16 Jan 2008 10:05Be aware that there is another app out there called "Iris" in late Beta stages by NoLobe Software. It is apparently near release and is a photo editing app.
If you download the NoLobe Iris, and install it - it will overwrite your MildMannered Software Iris app. You should drag the imposter Iris to the trash (don't use AppZapper) and install a new MM Software Iris, or you may lose your gallery of past recordings.

Type: CommentsDate: 20 Dec 2007 22:59Joel/MU:
Thanks for the link to comments providing the OLD version of Acquisition. Much appreciated.
However, this doesn't absolve Mr. Watanabe. It's one thing to make mistakes, but to do without apologizing or attempting to fix the situation is what upsets people - particularly those that have paid for the app previously.
I would add that after several days, Watanabe did respond twice to my email requesting a new license or access to the old version. His first response was two words "How rude." His second response was a new license code, which I am grateful for. It won't solve my lost downloads, but will allow me to use the new version.
Service with a scowl, I guess.

Type: CommentsDate: 18 Dec 2007 10:49Fantastic app, but Incredibly inconsiderate developer!
First, the old version of the app tells me there is an upgrade, and allows me to download it. Unfortunately, there was NO NOTICE that the new version required a new license from me.
Second, the developer's website indicates that old versions of the app will still work with old licenses. However, there is no way to DOWNGRADE to the old versions - they aren't available anywhere on the developer's website.
Third, when I bought the app, I recall I would be offered upgrades for life. I purchased it in 2004. What gives?
Fourth, the new version of the app (crippled demo mode) totally lost all my past download lists, including partial downloads. What's up with that?
And this is not the first time I've had problems with the developer, as his attitude towards customer questions has been awful at times.

Type: ReviewDate: 30 Nov 2007 09:13If you like playing Monopoly, this is a nice game. It replicates all the rules and moves accordingly, and the graphics are nice. The ability to customize rules is also nice.
However, this app needs some work to be more enjoyable. First, game play needs to be sped up. Even if you 'hide computer moves' by computer opponents, the graphics are arduously slow, especially for the human competitors (you).
Second, when there is a case for increasing monetary amounts with bidding or making trade offers, you must click on an up/down arrow which gives you only $10,000 increments! Thus, it takes forever to reach any significant amount. Surely, a type-in field or buttons to add higher increments would be easy to implement.
Third, the music, though pleasant, is monotonous. Yes, you can turn it off - but other tunes would be nice.
Fourth, the computer opponent AI's are sometimes quite dumb, even at the highest level. And it would be nice to have more computer opponents possible.
Overall, fun. But even games against computer opponents seem to take as long as games against real people - which in my family means hours.

Type: TroubleshootingDate: 6 Nov 2007 22:341. Been there, done that. I am updated up to 10.3.6.
2. Autoupdate recognizes that I need 10.3.7, but after downloading that update the updater cannot find any software that needs updating.
3. Using the standalone updater for 10.3.7 (or any other version) gives me the same error (= doesn't work).
4. Deleting the prefs for Autoupdate doesn't work.
5. Fixing permissions doesn't work.
6. Installing the OSX 10.4.10 combination update doesn't work.
7. Creating a new user account and installing via Autoupdate or standalone doesn't work.
The only thing I haven't tried is completely reinstalling the Office suite. I can't do this for another week or two, because I'm travelling - don't have my Office 2k4 intall disks available.
But I'll be damned if I will do this every time MS has to patch it's software. It's ridiculous. I'm running the latest version of Tiger on a 12" G4 Powerbook. I reformatted its hard drive and did a clean install last January in order to prevent problems like this.
I stand by my original comment - this is an MS problem and is completely unacceptable.
![]()
Type: TroubleshootingDate: 6 Nov 2007 19:49I've not been able to install any updates since 10.3.6.
None of the standalone updaters nor ones via the Autoupdate app can find anything to update.
It's unconscionable that this sort of thing could happen. This is Microsoft, not Joe's Home App Patching Code.
![]()
Type: TroubleshootingDate: 6 Nov 2007 19:42Nope, this doesn't work for me. Last update I installed was 10.3.6 and running the standalone 10.3.7 updater doesn't find anything to update.
Deleting the Autupdate pref files makes Autoupdate find the correct updater (fixes that problem) but again when the updater runs it doesn't find anything to update.
This is inexcusable.

Type: ReviewDate: 17 Oct 2007 18:26Outside is a menubar app that shows you the weather for one location. You can even get detailed information about your location's weather by selecting 'get info' from the pull down menu.
Outside gets its weather from government weather stations, particularly those accessed by NOAA. Unfortunately, this limits the options available for weather - though you can sometimes find international locations. Furthermore, these stations tend to be located at airports, which don't really reflect the weather in municipal locations. I live in Tokyo, but the Narita airport location is far outside the city. The temperatures and other variables are not very accurate.
Although the icons are clean, and the font for temperature easy to read - this application pales in comparison to another free menubar app - Meteorologist, aka Meteo. Updating of some weather stations also seems to take quite long compared to Meteo.
Outside also lacks the ability to access multiple locations, and forecasts/current condition details from the pull down menu - all which are present in Meteorlogist.
Although Meterologist has some problems (changes in weather server data format sometimes break the app), I don't see any reason to use Outside instead at this point.

Type: ReviewDate: 26 Sep 2007 12:39I'm reviewing from the perspective of the final Beta.
This app is slick, and fills a much needed niche on my iMac.
My 10 month old daughter enjoys the image in Photobooth while she sits on my lap. But we can only get still images from that.
Now, we make goofy movies together with Iris. And the other features are just way-cool. Great functionality, cool interface, fun implementation.
I only have 2 criticisms. The first is the gallery window should be more easily accessed from the camera window (how about a big fat button).
The second is the price - which should come down $10 or so IMHO.

Type: ReviewDate: 15 Sep 2007 10:12This app doesn't really seem to do much. You can only enter currency in pounds; there is no way to change currency. The prefs menu option gives you nothing. The help menu gives you nothing. There is a window for internet banking, but there doesn't seem to be anyway to use it. The main window has fields for various things, but it's unclear how to use them and at least one is incorrectly spelled (description!).

Type: CommentsDate: 4 Sep 2007 12:27This is a *very* interesting app. Here you have a virtual pasteboard on your desktop that you can add text or links to any app or folder, graphics or even movies (or screen shots from your iSight).
It's kind of like a 'roll your own' desktop and launcher.
Neat! Maybe a good app for kids learning a computer or even just a way to keep track of various things during your time on the computer.
The app is still a bit rough around the edges, and people trying this out should keep this in mind. I would also think that the price might be a bit steep for now.
If Conjure could be set to your desktop background - or even pop up as a screen saver - that would add some functionality.
I also wondered whether this interface would be great on a mobile phone or even a PDA (or the new OSX iPods?).
I would encourage anyone interested to give this app a try and email the developer with your feedback. He is very responsive to questions and suggestions.
And I'll gladly give a numerical review later when the product is more polished.

Type: ReviewDate: 4 Apr 2007 13:50First, this isn't just for scientific papers. It's for viewing and reading *any* PDF file.
It's very useful for reviewing and making comments on papers that are submitted digitally, as well as manuscripts. In the past, I've used Preview and PDFPen to grade my students' papers. However, Skim will probably be my tool of choice for this with its ability not only to highlight and circle text, but also to underline it!
You can also leave comments as anchored notes or straight text. And if you want to look at a graphic or some other part of a paper, while reading the text, the 'snap shot' feature lets you pop up a selection in a separate window (hold down apple key as you select with the mouse). And text in comment boxes will pop up for better visibility if you leave the mouse over them.
Is the app perfect? No - it's still in development. However, for a 0.2 version of a FREE product - it's an excellent value and replacement for Preview.

Type: CommentsDate: 30 Mar 2007 21:20I've been using this app for several years and have really found it useful, not only to plan my field work, but as an educational tool for students in my oceanography or marine biology courses.
Unfortunately, the newest version has taken a step backwards, in my opinion. The satellite images are a nice visual touch, but take some time to load (10s?) when you are switching views. Please consider returning to a faster or less graphic intensive mode.
Second, the calendar view of 'month' is much less informative that in the previous version, at least graphically. In the previous version, the colors for rising/falling/neagive tides were displayed on the month view. In the current version, the calendar view graphics have been simplified and there isn't a way to display these colors. This was useful in showing students the changes in a month at a glance and makes it easier to find that elusive minus tide. You can still see the colors in the DAY view, but no longer the calendar month view. Please consider providing the colors as an option on the calendar view. (And gimme back those old moon phase icons - they were cool!).
Lastly - what happened to the "X" in the app name?
In any case, I hope you will consider my suggestions and continue to improve the app.

Type: TroubleshootingDate: 28 Mar 2007 13:57Well, this version crashes when I start the app on my G5 iMac with OSX 10.4.9.

Some documentation would be nice. An icon for the app rather than the generic one would also be nice.

Type: CommentsDate: 23 Mar 2007 12:50This is an interesting application, and potentially useful for many molecular biologists who need to do quick tranformations of text files of sequences.
Howver, there doesn't seem to be any documentation, nor any developer website (in MacUpdate), just the developer's email address in the app. Many of the functions seem to be self evident. However, there doesn't seem to be any way of actually opening a text file. You have to cut and paste your sequences into a Transform window in order to manipulate them.
The previous version posted on MacUpdate was Donationware, but the current version is listed as shareware here - and Donationware from within the app. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any clear way to actually donate or pay anything. So...
In any case, this app seems to be a decent text tool, though the developer should consider some sort of brief support documents or site for the app.
![]()
Type: ReviewDate: 17 Mar 2007 22:17Unlike the previous reviewer, I can see plenty of reasons not to use iTunes including: inability to play many media formats and download ability limited to iTunes store.
Songbird is still pre-release and quite buggy. The preview install has some serious issues (like, don't install any of the add-ins when you first run the app, or it won't boot). However, if you can get it to run, it has many features iTunes doesn't.
Particularly nice is the ability to find and download music from various websites, including those focused on distribution of new and free content. Indy music lovers, this is the app for you.
But the developers really need to polish this thing, as it's not really ready for beta release yet.
![]()
Type: CommentsDate: 12 Mar 2007 11:104 peaks has a broader appeal in that molecular biology is used in nearly all biological disciplines these days. Maybe not by all researchers in those fields, but it has a representation in nearly all biology fields.
However, medline only helps biomedical research, pretty much. That was my point.
And yes, Papers has a great start. And yes, some of us expected that you'd add more search engines in the future. It's good that you actually come out and state that at this time.
Looking forward future versions of Papers.

Type: CommentsDate: 11 Mar 2007 08:04So, that would mean it is crippled, as it doesn't offer the version 2 functionality.

Type: CommentsDate: 23 Feb 2007 10:56I second the complaint about the demo version's time limit.
I've waivered on buying this app, because when I first installed it - I only used it once then forgot about it. Then when I had a need to try it - the demo period had ended. All subsequence demo's don't reset the clock, and using AppZapper to unistall doesn't either.
Another reason I hesitated to purchase it was that the only time I did use it, I wanted to import/convert .emf vector graphics files. Lineform was unable to import my emf files (even though it was stated as a feature). This feature alone might push me over the brink to purchase the app. But I can't test any current or future versions ability to import .emf, because of the time limit.
Please rethink your demo strategy.

Type: CommentsDate: 8 Feb 2007 08:09I third the comment about limited application to 'medical' related research.
Sure, medline has lots of stuff. However, I'm not finding much in the way of arthropod phylogenetics or general animal techniques for my molecular work.
When we get to ecology, which is more along my lines. Medline is useless.
The 4peaks app is something everyone can use. Papers is to narrowly focused.

Type: TroubleshootingDate: 1 Feb 2007 10:43I was really looking forward to this app, as it's predecessor "MacSync' worked quite well for syncing my Yojimbo and other information until recent OS updates seemed to disable it.
Unfortunately, SyncTogether doesn't work correctly for me between my G4 Powerbook and G5 iMac (both using OS 10.4.8), after several trys at resolving the problems. And yes, I followed the suggestions in the help file for troubleshooting.
All my attempts to synchronize Safari book marks, Yojimbo stuff, and address book contacts resulted in extraordinarily long periods of wait (15-20 minutes), and high processor load (on my PowerBook) followed by error messages and a crash of the node on my PowerBook. Contacts and Yojimbo info was partially synched to the iMac, but not at all for the PowerBook.
I guess it's a good thing this product has a demo, because it's not ready for prime time yet.

Type: CommentsDate: 23 Jan 2007 15:43I really dislike the way this update is announced/distributed without any clear indication that owners of previous versions have to purchase an upgrade license.
There's no indication of it on the install .dmg. Worse, when you type in your old serial number, there is no indication of why it doesn't work. The only way one can find out that he/she has to purchase the upgrade is that you have to dig on the xeric website to find it.
Regardless if this is intentional or not, it leaves a bad taste in the mouth for owners of the previous version.
I purchased ED version 3.5.5 earlier this year, and frankly I'm not sure having a pref panel version of the same app is worth the upgrade price. I doubt I'm the only one who feels this way.

Type: ReviewDate: 2 Jan 2007 22:08This app is very quick and easy to use. It displays all months of the year on your desktop with some nautical images in the background. You can hide/show the calendar with a button click. You can change the year, look at individual months or weeks, and add events to days.
Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be any integration with iCal or preferences to customize the calendar. Furthermore, this appears to be a 'free sample' advertisement for customized calendar apps from Desktop ADvantage. Clicking on the HOME button brings up the company website, and it doesn't seem possible to change the URL.
To sum it up, the app is free, looks beautiful (if you are into the nautical thing), but can't be customized and has no iCal integration.

Type: CommentsDate: 30 Nov 2006 10:30Sorry, but that's a poor reason to change it.
How about this - I'm a WoW license holder, resident of Japan and equally offended you would ignore accepted convention to please a minority. This is political correctness where it is really unwarranted.
How about neutral names for all countries or regions, because they offend people? For example, I can see people irriated that the Sea of Cortez is named for a Spaniard instead of the native people who knew that sea by their own name. Whatcha gonna do - call that one the "More East Sea"?

Type: CommentsDate: 29 Nov 2006 08:47Sorry, the Sea of Japan is the correct name - not East Sea. That's been the standard name on maps for years. Of course Koreans call it the Korean sea.

Type: CommentsDate: 28 Nov 2006 21:29Actually, though I agree, my comment was more for MU folks, as this doesn't see the right place to list DTP Office.
It's a separate offering, according to Devon's website, though it will overwrite your copy of DTP when you install it.

Type: CommentsDate: 28 Nov 2006 11:42Hmmm... a couple things.
First this is not strictly DTP. It's DTP OFFICE and apparently different app from DTP. In fact you have to pay for an upgradre from DTP to get it.
Second it is a beta, and not of DTP, but the new product.

Type: TroubleshootingDate: 13 Nov 2006 07:12I'm also having trouble with this file on a PPC Mac (G5). Basically, it doesn't work in test mode or otherwise.
This download seems quite small (23kb) compared to the other "Lotsa" screen savers (200+kb). Perhaps the upload is corrupted or incomplete.

Type: CommentsDate: 10 Nov 2006 12:41Me too. I didn't even see the MacUpdate notice.
I wish the old version would still work. :-(

Type: CommentsDate: 10 Nov 2006 10:40Looks like you have to submit your license key to get 2.0 upgrades. Mine (obtained via MacZot) from 1.7 did not work, so I wonder if their upgrade system is functioning yet.

Type: ReviewDate: 23 Oct 2006 12:20This is a slick, small music player app that sort of illustrates energy choices with music as a vehicle. You can choose between nuclear and wind energy to power your music. A free music track by Ryuchi Sakamoto (YMO member) is included.
You also can play individuals tracks of your choosing in your music library, or with an Apple script, play from an iTunes playlist. I wasn't able to get the playlist to work correctly - it seemed to only play the first track in the playlist.
I was unable to see animations from the 'nuclear energy' option, other than the steam from the reactor. You are supposed to see some sort of decaying desktop. Perhaps it doesn't function with background photos as desktop images, as I have on my system. Or it takes hours to happen.
The wind energy option is interesting, and requires you to blow (make exhale noises) into your mike to get any power.
As an education medium, this doesn't do a very good job of illustrating the energy issues, and oversimplifies it. In reality, nuclear wastes have effects, but they aren't visually obvious. And comparing wind to nuclear energy doesn't convey a sense of the other options available like fossil fuels and solar. A solar option could be implemented by varying power according to the light that hits your iSight. The fossil fuel option could cause your desktop to get sooty.
Let's hope in version 2, they'll add these things or at least fix the problems I encountered.

Type: CommentsDate: 3 Oct 2006 13:55Ummm.... this isn't an application or other software really. It's an electronic journal - from what I can tell.
It may be a fine journal - but i don't see how it qualifies for MacUpdate.

Type: CommentsDate: 12 Sep 2006 15:07Not so fast partner. iTunes only can find covers for stuff that's on the iTunes store. And if your tags are off, it won't work right either, AFAIK.

Type: ReviewDate: 31 Aug 2006 11:49I really, really think that we need a better way to indicate such updates that are not updates, but betas. Or even betas from actual releases.
Sure, putting a 'b' in the name is a sign of a beta, but it isn't always obvious, especially to inexperienced folks. And in this particular case, there isn't any 'b' in any of the Skype releases.
So, MacUpdate - PLEASE consider HIGHLIGHTING the name of beta software in RED or some other way to make it clearer.
Pretty please?

Type: TroubleshootingDate: 20 Aug 2006 10:38This release appears to be buggy on my G5 iMac. It infinitely keeps requesting my gmail login info over, and over, and over...
Gmail Notifier still works fine, however.
Please address this issue, as I'm likely not the only one experiencing it.

Type: CommentsDate: 6 Aug 2006 10:39This is confusing.
Meteo is the short name used for a menubar weather app (Meteorologist). It's been available for quite some time: http://heat-meteo.sourceforge.net/
"Meteo" is used several places in the documentation and in the app itself.
From what I can tell these are from different developers.
I don't know who has the rights to the name 'Meteo', but I think the menu app has been out for a longer time.
I ask that the name conflict be resolved, as I and others don't want to mistakenly download the wrong app.
Please resolve this name issue so we don't download the wrong software.

Type: CommentsDate: 29 Jul 2006 08:41Where's my free dowload? I don't get it.
I purchased this app previously, and currently have 131.1 installed. When I booted it up, I get the 'Update Available' nag. Ufortunately, this opens the Aquisition home page. But the only 'Download' button takes me to a PayPal purchase link and there doesn't seem to be any free update or upload link.
What's up with that?
![]()
Type: CommentsDate: 10 Jul 2006 13:22Well, OK. But there's no way of knowing it's there without digging for it.
I suppose it would be better to have two equal download links, since we don't know which the main download link goes to. Then again, maybe this would be difficult to work into MacUpdate.
In any case, downloading the PPC version will solve the user's problem of losing his preferences and registration info. I've confirmed this on two different machines.

Type: CommentsDate: 10 Jul 2006 10:21I think the problem is that you download the Universal version, not the PPC version. When you download the Uni version and drag it to your app folder, your app folder won't overwrite the old PPC one. Try downloading the PPC version directly from the site (not MacUpdate) instead and see if it keeps your preferences.
MacUpdate could provide a link to the download page so you can choose universal or PPC. Or perhaps the GC installer could opt for the PPC version only.

Any idea of what the problem is?

Type: CommentsDate: 11 May 2006 13:12No - I didn't use that. I used what your html manual says to use: "http://127.0.0.1:8080". It says very clearly at the top of the page "The web application" to enter this address into your browser's address field. It doesn't say anything about using the address from the status bar.
However, using the address in the status bar in a web browser DOES work. Thank you.
I hope you will update or revise your manual to clarify this.

Type: ReviewDate: 11 May 2006 12:11SandVox as a beta is easier to use and more functional than iWeb - hands down.
Like others commenting here, I am also beta testing SandVox. The first beta release was not very functional, but the current release I've been testing is really smooth, easy to use, with relatively few bugs to hamper you.
The templates are much more attractive (and numerous) than the ones that come with iWeb. The interface is solid, though a bit unusual, and the rendered pages are nice.
The developers are candid, very responsive to feedback, and have worked with me (and others) to solve several issues. The final release version should be impressive.
To compare SandVox with iWeb: !ith iWeb, I feel like I'm working on a tiny desk with simple tools that only allow me to do things in one way. With SandVox, I feel like the tools are also simple, but flexible and in a bigger tool box.

Type: TroubleshootingDate: 8 May 2006 14:36I couldn't get this app to work properly after starting the server on my 20" iMac over my wireless LAN at home.
I was unable to make a connection to the server with my laptop using the default settings (server doesn't exist) and even after switching to a different port. I don't have a firewall, as far as I know other than the standard settings on OSX.
Perhaps the settings aren't as self explanatory as they should be.

Type: ReviewDate: 23 Apr 2006 12:50This app shows a lot of promise, but the constant crashes I get from it make it difficult to use.
Using the iTunes store graphics is an excellent idea, as you can get decent resolution album covers. However, not all content makes it to iTunes, as well as some artists. And if you've ripped music from your CDs, the tags may not match the iTunes store database - particularly if it is a multi CD album.
You can partially solve this by altering the 'get artwork' search method. You can search for all covers from a particular artist, or just the album or song name. Unfortunately, clicking on the little side arrow to change these options is difficult to do accurately every time, and you end up doing a search you didn't want to very easily. Worse, multicover searches take a long time.
The download window also occludes the song list, making it difficult to see where you are at on the list.
The worst thing, however, is the frequency of crashes - which for me is very numerous. Both long and short song list searches have led to crashes, and it seems that Corripio doesn't automatically save the found covers. So if it crashes before the search finishes - all that work is lost from what I can tell.
This limits you to shorter searches, which are just a crash-prone as longer ones.
I'm afraid I'll stick with Export Artwork for now. Though Corripio is free, it's just not worth my time.
