TVALLEAU I hesitate to spend that kind of money for something not reviewed, but I gave my 5G iPod to my wife, and needed to make sure she got all the games, videos and so on, and not just the music. So, I put up my $25... and everything worked as promised. It's apparently a Java app, or some other kind of Windoz port, because it offers almost _zero_ feedback while it's working (one of my favorite complaints about Windows software. People have to just assume the software is working, as there is generally no progress bar; not spinning cursor... nothing... drives me crazy! - and is yet another reason to use Macs.) So, when it was copying back the games to her computer, I had absolutely no clue at all that it wasn't just locked up. Well, it wasn't... and the software did everything it promised to do. So, with that one caveat, yes: it works. (Other products, AFAIK, don't handle _everything_ (such as games)) (Version 6.30)

TVALLEAU Good software with a responsive developer. Although I've not seen an update in a while (thanks!) when I did need to contact the developer a while back, I recall that he responded promptly and courteously. As to the software, it works just fine. (Version 1.7)

Interarchy | Jan 11 2008 |
Unfortunately, this version is not ready for prime time. It crashes constantly. (Their forum is full of complaints.) There is no help; you cannot add a folder to the bookmark bar w/o crashing; adding a local file bookmark crashes it; the net tools are gone.. the list goes on. This is very weird: Interarchy has always been a strong, reliable client... this release (9.0) isn't even ready for beta status, IMHO. (Version 9.0)

TVALLEAU You have to launch it manually. It was designed to be "non-bloated" and to have it launch when EyeTV launches would require a second program running all the time in the background just looking to see if EyeTV was launched. Way too much overhead for a "little gadget." (Version 1.2)

NetBarrier X5 | Nov 12 2007 |
TVALLEAU Well, that's all nonsense. I've both used NetBarrier, and uninstalled it, and reinstalled it. Anyone who says you have to "low level reformat" the drive to uninstall it doesn't know what they are talking about. (For one thing a "low level" reformat is not possible on Macs... nor generally on any modern drives without special software.) Second, the Mac firewall works just fine, with or without NetBarrier. Third, you can just turn it off. I don't know what problems this poster had, but they are not typical, and likely unique to his own setup. Sorry for his troubles, but they certainly do not match my own experience. (Version 10.4.4)

TVALLEAU Watch out! If you got this as part of a pack of games, and more than two months ago, you won't be able to register it, or go back to the previous version. (Version 1.1.2)

TVALLEAU Re: superduper - the answer is because I don't know the name of the disk used inside of superduper. What I did instead was ask the SD programmer to simply add the invisible file to his own list, which he uses for "restore spotlight state." He's considering it. As to system preferences: it doesn't seem to remember the privacy state of removable hard drives between restarts. That is, in fact, what inspired me to write this little script.

Tenon iTools | Jul 20 2007 |
TVALLEAU I could not disagree more with the previous reviewer. For "newbies" iTools is -exactly- what's needed, unless you've got tons of time on your hands, and a strong geeky streak. Apache is "non-trivial" to control, and if you're doing anything more than the barest essentials, iTools is a delight. You've got to understand that Apache server is a complex piece of software. iTools puts a friendly face on it, and more importantly, keeps you from screwing up intricate manipulations done by hand. I resisted because of the price, for years, in fact. But now that I have it, I wondered at my stupidity in delaying. There's no free lunch, and iTools isn't bullet-proof, but it's a darned site better than "Apache Raw" IMHO. (Version 8.2.4)

DasBoot | Feb 7 2007 |
TVALLEAU to the fellow who was experiencing constant rebooting: you must have lots of other stuff on that stick, since a DW burn, with several other utilities added, takes less than 1 gig. I did it, and it booted my MacBook perfectly. Try erasing the stick first. (Version 1.0.1)

TVALLEAU At this point, I suspect that virusbarrier is (over) reacting to the code contained in the script. Here is their webpage on it: http://www.intego.com/news/ism0602.asp. A quick Google of the issue "osx.exploit.metadata.b" will provide more information. (Version 1.1.1)

JSLATER I just updated because hpkill.app was broken. After that, I ran virex on the whole thing and it didn't report anything. I'm not sure how a script file could really have much of a virus anyway. Anyway, please try the new version with your virus scanner. (Version 1.1.1)

JSLATER I agree. The script is designed to kill off a system process, so that may look unfriendly to a virus scanner. Apparently there is a way to modify it so it doesn't look so, but I don't know how to do that. I've read that that virus scanner is a little psychotic. (Version 1.1.1)

SILKYPIX Developer Studio | Dec 15 2006 |
TVALLEAU If you use a Fuji S3 Pro for raw shooting, this is really the only sofware you'd want to 'develop' those photos. The difference between Aperture/Photoshop/Bibble/Lightroom and SilkyPix is just stunning! The image detail is probably twice as high with SilkyPix when using the extended range feature of the camera. This software produces a 12 megapixel image that will leave you wondering what the others did wrong. example: (Version 3.0.3.4)

D2X-XL | Dec 11 2005 |
TVALLEAU My gosh. I sent in two crash logs. I even explained that crash logs append data at the bottom of the list, not the top. I put the program in all the places suggested during my attempts to get it to run (the share folder; the games folder; etc) I placed the SDL in first one, then the other, and finally both frameworks folders. I re-installed the original game; I downloaded and installed three recent versions of the software. Finally I sent off a second crash log. In return for this effort, I received letters villifying me as "a butt"; suggesting that I get the code and compile it myself and so on. Now when you consider that I went to a lot more effort than any of the several -other- people who posted the same problem (crash), I'm not sure why I was singled out for attack. I tried to politely simply refuse further communications, but instead received a long letter letting me know what an idiot I am, and telling me to "read the instructions" (which I'd done about twenty times.) Look: there are many other people having trouble with this software. I -understand- that you're doing it voluntarily. But so what? That's YOUR choice. I tried to help by providing crash logs and so on. PLEASE: don't attack those who are trying to help you. If you don't like the criticism, pull the product. Finally: PLEASE stop emailing me. as I take a 2nd look at your comment, I start to believe that you haven't read the (changed) installation instructions on my Descent 2 site. D2 data folder has been made more Mac conformant and is now /Applications/Games/D2X-XL. (Version 1.5.44)

a crash log had only arrived at my e-mail address after I had contacted you. The crash log hints to D2X-XL not finding the D2 data on your machine. Your post states a data path that is not being used any more - see the latest installation instructions. You declined the offer to get the source code yourself and help us in fixing your problems. You obviously are not acknowledging the fact that this is project done in our leisure time, brought to the public for free, where support is welcome. (Version 1.5.44)

this is not a platform for you to start a flame war, and I told you before to stick with the truth. #1 I only received a crash log after contacting you from my e-mail address. #2 I kindly and in an absolutely acceptable way asked to get the source code yourself and debug the program in order to help us. #3 I received a very unfriendly letter from you expressing your general antipathy and what you thought of me. You got the appropriate reply. Apart from that, I have said everything before. (Version 1.5.44)

D2X-XL | Dec 11 2005 |
KARX11ERX To finish this, you have been no help at all. Instead, you have been complaining about the program in general, been touchy about advice given to you (emphasizing that at the age of 60 you don't need advice from me), and have generally addressed me derogatorily. My request to download the source code yourself and help us in fixing this issue (as you wrote you were a programmer), which was politely issued and a call to support us, has obviously been completely mistaken by you as an arrogant remark leaving you alone with the problem - which it wasn't at all. If at all, this says something about your perception of things around you. Stop making this place a forum of your negative feelings. (Version 1.5.44)

TVALLEAU I like it a lot. Wish I could contact the author tho. LCD monitors are ON when the screen is black, and are being 'saved' when the screen is white. I'd like a red-pill version with a white background, so that it will -really- save my screen! (Version 1.4.2)

TVALLEAU I have a couple-year-old 1Ghz 12" TiBook. Running great. Installed this product and it completely locked up after I initialized with the serial number. Would not reboot; frozen cursor; weird sounds; flashing "sleep light"... complete chaos. I'm a programmer and this machine is kept in a minimalized, pristine condition, with a recent install of 10.4.1. (Version 3.4)
